For 13yearold Bi Tianyu, playing with fuse beads is the best thing to do with friends. “We sit together and share our works. You feel that someone is with you. It helps us get on well with one another.”
When Xiao Sa, a 22yearold from Fujian first started fuse bead art, she was preparing for a big exam. “I was worried all the time, and found fuse beads quite relaxing. When I carefully arranged (拼) each bead and fixed them into shape, I became quiet. The worries slowly melt away.”

A VISIT TO FLORENCE
by Jamal Mohamed, age 12
I often travel abroad with my parents. They’re both painters, so they really enjoy visiting museums all over the world. Last summer we went to Italy. We visited a lot of beautiful cities, but the one I liked best was Florence. The lady who took us sightseeing was my father’s art teacher. She’d lived in Florence for over 30 years, so she knew a lot of interesting facts about the city.
Florence has a lot of things to see. On the first day, we went to the Uffizi Gallery Museum. There were a lot of beautiful paintings, but I was a bit scared when I saw Caravaggio’s Medusa. This painting shows the head of a woman whose hair is actually snakes! My little brother started crying when he saw it, so we had to leave the room!
We spent the next three days walking around the town. Luckily, it was sunny all the time, so we visited several wonderful buildings in the city centre and had a nice walk along the Arno river. There are a lot of nice bridges, but one of the oldest ones, Ponte Vecchio, is amazing because it’s got real shops on it.
I never thought I would find Florence so interesting. It’s a shame we only stayed there for four days, so we weren’t able to see that much. However, my parents have decided we’ll go back. We’re going to spend a few weeks there next time, so we’ll have time to visit what we missed.
12. Why did Jamal’s parents decide to visit Italy
A.They wanted to visit beautiful cities.
B.They enjoy visiting museums.
C.They wanted to see his father’s art teacher.
13. Why did Jamal and his family leave the Uffizi Gallery Museum
A.Jamal was scared by a picture.
B.There were some snakes in the museum.
C.Jamal’s little brother cried.
14. What did Jamal and his family do during their stay in Florence
A.They went sightseeing.
B.They went shopping.
C.They went sunbathing by the river.
15. What does Jamal say about his trip
A.He thought it was a bit boring.
B.He is sorry that it was so short.
C.He’s sad because he misses Florence.

Songyang in Lishui City, Zhejiang Province, is known as “the last secret land of Jiangnan”. It was once a farming area. But in recent years, it has developed into a popular tourist place. Its wellpreserved (保护) old villages make it a quiet place for city people to escape from busy life. Tourism becomes a new driver of the local economy (经济).
In the summer of 2025, Songyang welcomed a special group of visitors: translators. They were here for the Translator’s Home, China’s first translator residency programme (驻留项目). Both Chinese and foreign translators were invited to stay in a QingDynasty minsu (a traditional Chinese guesthouse) in Youtian Village. They could stay for up to eight weeks, and the programme helped pay for their stay.
Huang Hong, a translator and university professor (教授), is one of the starters of the programme. She grew up in Songyang. She hoped to find a meaningful way to give back to her hometown. She got the idea for the programme during a field trip last April. And it officially began on September 30—International Translation Day.
So far, quite a few translators from across the world have joined the Translator’s Home programme. Youtian Village provides a good environment for their work. Huang takes great pride in the programme. She believes translators, as cultural bridges, can help the world learn about Songyang’s culture. The programme also benefits (使受益) local businesses by bringing more tourists.
