It was a hot summer afternoon. I was walking home from school when I saw a small dog lying by the roadside. It looked weak and tired. I approached slowly and saw that it had a cut on its leg. The dog tried to stand up but fell back down.
I remembered that my neighbour, Mrs. Lee, was a volunteer at the local animal shelter. I decided to take the dog to her. I carefully picked it up and carried it to Mrs. Lee's house. She was surprised to see me with the injured dog.
Mrs. Lee examined the dog and said it needed medical attention. She called the animal shelter, and they agreed to take the dog in. "Thank you for helping this little one," she said. "Not many people would stop to help an animal in need."
Over the next few weeks, I visited the shelter to check on the dog. The staff named him Lucky. With proper care, Lucky recovered quickly. He was soon adopted by a loving family.
This experience taught me that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. I now volunteer at the animal shelter every weekend, helping other animals in need.

Many people believe that British people only speak with a Received Pronunciation (RP) accent, also known as "the Queen's English". However, this is far from the truth. In fact, there are many different regional accents in Britain, and RP is just one of them.
A recent study by the University of Manchester found that only about 3% of British people speak with a pure RP accent. The majority speak with regional accents such as Geordie (from Newcastle), Scouse (from Liverpool), or Cockney (from London). These accents are shaped by the history, culture, and geography of their regions.
The study also found that people with regional accents are often judged unfairly. For example, people with a Birmingham accent (Brummie) are sometimes seen as less intelligent or less educated. This is despite the fact that there is no connection between accent and intelligence.
However, things are changing. More and more people are proud of their regional accents. TV shows and radio programmes now feature presenters with various accents. This helps to break down stereotypes and celebrate the diversity of British English.
Dr. Smith, who led the study, said, "Accent is an important part of our identity. It tells a story about where we come from and who we are. We should embrace all accents, not just RP."
8. What is the common misunderstanding about British accents
A. All British people speak with a RP accent.
B. Regional accents are more common than RP.
C. RP is the only accent taught in schools.
D. People with RP are more intelligent.
9. What did the study by the University of Manchester find
A. RP is the most common accent in Britain.
B. Only 3% of British people speak with a pure RP accent.
C. People with regional accents are more intelligent.
D. Regional accents are disappearing.
10. What does the underlined word "stereotypes" in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Facts.
B. Opinions based on truth.
C. Fixed ideas that are not true.
D. Compliments.
11. What is Dr. Smith's attitude towards regional accents
A. He thinks they should be replaced by RP.
B. He believes they are a part of identity.
C. He thinks they are less educated.
D. He is worried about their future.
D
A new study has found that people who spend more than four hours a day on social media are more likely to feel lonely and depressed. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, involved 200 college students. The participants were asked to limit their social media use to 30 minutes a day for three weeks.
The results showed that after three weeks, the participants reported significantly lower levels of loneliness and depression. They also felt more connected to their friends and family in real life.
Dr. Melissa Hunt, who led the study, said, "Using social media is not inherently bad, but using it excessively can have negative effects on mental health. When people spend too much time on social media, they often compare themselves to others, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy."
The study also found that social media use before bedtime can affect sleep quality. The blue light from screens interferes with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. This can lead to insomnia and other sleep disorders.
The researchers recommend setting time limits for social media use and avoiding screens for at least one hour before bedtime. They also suggest spending more time on face to face interactions and outdoor activities.
12. What did the study find about people who spend more than four hours on social media
A. They are more likely to feel lonely and depressed.
B. They have better sleep quality.
C. They are more connected to friends in real life.
D. They have lower levels of stress.
13. How long were the participants asked to limit their social media use
A. 30 minutes a day for three weeks.
B. Four hours a day for three weeks.
C. 30 minutes a week for four weeks.
D. Four hours a week for four weeks.
14. What does the underlined word "inadequacy" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Confidence.
B. Happiness.
C. Feeling not good enough.
D. Feeling superior.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Benefits of Social Media.
B. How to Use Social Media Wisely.
C. Social Media and Mental Health.
D. The History of Social Media.

It was my first day at the new school. I had just moved to a new city with my family, and everything felt strange. The school was much bigger than my old one, and I didn't know anyone. As I walked into the classroom, I felt my heart racing. All the students were already seated, and they all turned to look at me. The teacher, Mrs. White, introduced me to the class and pointed to an empty seat in the back.
I walked to my seat, trying not to make eye contact with anyone. The lesson started, but I couldn't focus. I was too busy thinking about how I would survive the rest of the day. At lunchtime, I sat alone in the cafeteria, eating my sandwich quietly. I looked around and saw groups of friends laughing and talking. I felt so lonely.
Suddenly, a girl with long black hair came over to my table. She had a friendly smile on her face. "Hi, I'm Emily," she said. "Can I sit with you " I nodded, surprised. She sat down and started talking about her favourite subjects and hobbies. She even told me a funny story about her little brother.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Emily's kindness made me feel much better.

第二节
Emily's kindness made me feel much better. She was so easy to talk to that I soon forgot my nervousness. She told me about the school, the teachers, and even the best places to buy snacks. For the first time that day, I smiled. Emily didn't just sit with me; she introduced me to her friends at another table. They all welcomed me warmly. By the end of lunch, I had made several new friends. I couldn't believe how much my day had changed in just a few minutes. Emily's simple act of kindness had turned a lonely day into a happy one.
From that day on, we became good friends. Emily showed me around the school and helped me with my homework. She introduced me to more friends, and soon I felt like I had been at the school for years. We spent a lot of time together, sharing stories and laughing. Thanks to Emily, I overcame my fear of the new school and learned that a small act of kindness can make a big difference. I will always cherish the memory of that first day and the friend who changed everything.
