Mrs. Li is over 80 years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. A reporter interviewed her yesterday. The following are their questions and answers.
What was your life like in the past
My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a postman, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn’t go out to work. There were five children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job.
The food we ate was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I wasn’t sent to school because my family couldn’t afford the tuition.
How has life changed
Families have got smaller than they were in the past. The role of women has changed too. My daughter is really lucky. She has a good education. I’m happy that she can go to work even after getting married, but sometimes I feel lonely because she can’t come to see me often.
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went everywhere on foot. Now you can take a bus, drive a car or ride shared bikes. What I don’t like is that there’s so much more traffic. It’s so difficult to cross the road. And, of course, we have television today and I really enjoy watching TV. But I hate some of the shows because they are too noisy for me.
Generally speaking, I think life is better today. We eat better and we live longer.

In the 1980s, many foreign photographers came to China. They took photos of the social changes after the country’s opening-up. Mike Emery, now 69, is one of them.
In the early spring of 1980, Emery got a job as a photographer on a ship to China. His main job was to take photos for the guests on the ship. When he stepped onto the land of China for the very first time, he was so excited. Emery followed the guests to big cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. In his spare time, he walked with a camera through the streets alone and recorded people’s daily lives in those cities. He took a large number of pictures of children. In his photos, they played on the streets, went to school, and smiled at him happily.
Emery returned to China 39 years later. When he stepped off the plane and saw the country again, he saw so many tall apartment blocks that he could hardly believe his eyes. Besides, the once narrow streets have become wide roads and bridges. This change has made public transportation more convenient. In the same year, he published a photo book—China 1980. He hopes these photos can help people understand Chinese society in 1980 and show them China’s great changes.
Last year, from July 24th to August 19th, Emery had a photo exhibition (展览), Nice to Meet You, in Shanghai. These photos bring back pleasant old memories. “Through these photos, people today can walk into the past and touch the special stories of China,” he said.

Over the past ten years, China has developed rapidly, and its high-speed rail system stands out as clear proof (证明). On December 26 of last year, three new high-speed rail lines, Xi’an-Yan’an, Wuhan-Yichang and Nanchang-Jingdezhen, started service. With a network of these new lines, China’s total high-speed rail operating mileage (运营里程) has reached over 50,000 kilometers. It is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world.
Nowadays, high-speed rail serves 97% of Chinese cities with over 500,000 people. It has completely changed people’s travel experience. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average of 16 million passengers take the high-speed rail every day. This is a far cry from the past. Back then, buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache, and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour.
High-speed rail now links big cities with medium-sized and small towns, and drives travel and local industries. For example, after the Nanchang-Huangshan high-speed rail opened in 2017, Jiangxi Province — lying along the line — saw sharp rise in tourist visits over ten years. What’s more, China has shared its technology and experience through working with over 40 countries. From technology follower to international leader, China’s high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country’s progress. China’s railway industry is also exploring faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains to drive further development in transportation in the future.
21.How does the writer show the progress of China’s high-speed rail in paragraph 1
A.By telling a story. B.By introducing facts.
C.By answering questions. D.By comparing records.
22.Which city has the best chance of being part of China’s high-speed rail network
A.A city with 600,000 people. B.A city with 400,000 people.
C.A city with 300,000 people. D.A city with 100,000 people.
23.What does the underlined part “a far cry from” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Quite similar to. B.Very different from.
C.The same as. D.A long distance from.
24.What main message does the writer want to give in paragraph 3
A.China’s high-speed rail is now the world’s longest.
B.High-speed rail makes travel faster and easier now.
C.China plays a leading role in the world travel industry.
D.High-speed rail develops and helps China and the world.
25.How does the writer feel about the future of China’s maglev trains
A.Uncertain. B.Confident. C.Hopeless. D.Worried.

The Blue Bus Ticket
When twelve-year-old Nian helped her grandmother clean a drawer, she found a faded blue bus ticket. The price printed on it was only ten cents, and the date was nearly fifty years ago. Grandma explained that the bus came twice a day when she was young. The morning bus took workers to town and the evening one brought them home. If she missed it, she had to walk seven kilometers along an unlit road.
Nian immediately opened a transport app. It showed six bus lines near their village, and the next bus would arrive in eight minutes. “Life must be much better now,” she said. Grandma agreed that travel was faster and safer, but she did not call the past completely inconvenient. People on the old bus knew almost everyone. They carried baskets for older passengers, passed messages to neighbors and sometimes asked the driver to wait for a child running toward the stop.
The next morning, Nian watched the crowded school bus more carefully. An elderly man got on, holding two heavy bags. Before she could move, another student offered his seat. A woman lifted one bag, and the driver waited until the man was safely seated. No app had told them to do these things. Nian finally understood Grandma’s point: a faster bus represented progress, but a better journey also depended on the people sharing it.
For a school history project, Nian placed the ticket beside a screenshot of today’s bus map. Her classmates first noticed the price difference, but their discussion soon turned to what should never be left behind. Under the two images, Nian wrote, “Roads and machines change a town; everyday choices help a community grow.”
26.Where did Nian find the old ticket

27.What can we infer about the old evening bus
A.It traveled on a well-lit road. B.It was used only by children.
C.Missing it caused serious trouble. D.Its ticket price often changed.
28.Why does the writer say “No app had told them to do these things”
A.To show the app had stopped working.
B.To explain why the bus arrived late.
C.To suggest passengers should follow online rules.
D.To stress that kindness came from people’s own choices.
29.What does “what should never be left behind” refer to
A.Care for other passengers. B.The evening bus route.
C.The old ticket price. D.The paper history project.
30.Which title best expresses the main idea
A.The Cheapest Ticket in Town B.Progress Is More Than Moving Faster
C.Two Maps of the Same Village D.How to Use a Transport App

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, the production level (水平) of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (灌溉渠) and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they ” I asked. “They are good men from our government.” my grandmother replied.
Soon after, I moved to the city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers no longer had to go up and down the hill. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to plant fruit trees to increase the fruit production.
Seeing the big changes in my village, I’ve realized that although more and more people work hard to live in a big city, they should never forget their hometowns where they are from.

take… as an example是固定短语,意为“以……

22.根据第二段“high-speed rail serves 97% of Chinese cities with over 500,000 people”可知,人口超过50万的城市最有可能纳入网络,60万人口符合条件。
由此可推知短语“a far cry from”含义为“与……大不相同”。
24.第三段提到高铁连接城乡带动国内旅游产业,同时与40多个国家合作分享技术,表明高铁发展惠及中国及世界。
25.文章最后一句提到“China's railway industry is also exploring faster maglev trains to drive further development in transportation in the future.”,这句话表明作者对中国铁路技术的持续创新和未来发展持积极、肯定的态度,认为其能推动进一步发展,因此是充满信心的。

27.根据文章第一段“If she missed it, she had to walk seven kilometers along an unlit road.”
28.根据文章第三段“Before she could move, another student offered his seat. A woman lifted one bag, and the driver waited until the man was safely seated.”说明学生们主动帮助老人(让座、提包),司机耐心等待,作者接着说“No app had told them to do these things”,意在强调这些善举并非来自软件的指令,而是源于人们自发的选择和善意(kindness came from people’s own choices)。
29.根据文章最后一段,同学们讨论“what should never be left behind”,随后Nian写道“everyday choices help a community grow”。
第三段提到“a faster bus represented progress, but a better journey also depended on the people sharing it”,选项B“进步不仅仅是走得更快”最能概括这一中心思想,为最佳标题。

Changes of My City In recent years, with the rapid development of our country, great changes have taken place in the city we live in.
In the past, people went out by buses or bikes. Now, e-bikes, e-cars and subways are common. People used to shop in markets and watch TV at home. But now they enjoy online shopping, play in community squares and even travel abroad. Besides, rivers were dirty and there were few trees. Now the city is clean with many flowers.
