①When you ask someone a question in English, it could come across as a little rude if you say something too directly. Luckily, there are a lot of different expressions that help you sound more polite. Here are some examples of the polite expressions.
②Start with “excuse me” or “pardon me” to get a person’s attention. If you’ re coming over to a stranger and want to ask him or her a question, try one of these expressions to start your conversation and show your politeness (礼貌). ③Begin a question with “may” if you need to ask for permission (允许). Starting a question with “may” is a great idea for making your request sound more polite. Rather than saying directly what you need or want to do, ask the other person if it’s okay for you to do it. For example, you can say, “May I use your phone for a minute ”
④Use “can”, “could” or “would” when you make a request. Leading right away with a question word such as “where” or “how” might make your question sound rude. For example, instead of asking “Where is the bathroom ” you could say “Would you mind telling me where the bathroom is ”
⑤Say “please” once in your question. Saying “please” shows that you have good manners, so don’t forget to say it when you’re requesting something. The Power of Imitation in Language Learning
Imitation is one of the most natural and effective ways to learn a new language. From the moment we are born, we learn by imitating the sounds and actions of those around us. This is how we first learn to speak. Even as adults, imitation remains a powerful tool for language acquisition.
When you imitate a native speaker, you are not just copying their words. You are also learning their pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. This helps you sound more natural and fluent. Studies have shown that learners who imitate native speakers often develop better speaking skills than those who do not. Imitation can also help you understand the culture behind the language. By copying the way people speak, you can learn about their values and customs.
However, imitation is not just about repeating what you hear. It is also about understanding why people say things in a certain way. This is where active imitation comes in. Active imitation involves thinking about what you are imitating and making it your own. With practice, you can use imitation to become a more confident and effective communicator.
In conclusion, imitation is a valuable skill for language learners. It can help you speak more naturally, understand the culture, and improve your overall communication skills. So, don't be afraid to imitate. It is a sign of a good language learner.

How to Infer the Meaning of New Words
When you are reading, you will often come across new words. 31 You don’t need to stop and look up every word in the dictionary. You can infer the meaning of a new word from the context.
One way to do this is to look at the text clues around the word. 32 For example, if the word is “lyrics”, and the sentence is “She is reading the lyrics while singing”, you can guess that “lyrics” means the words of a song.
Another way is to use your knowledge of prefixes and suffixes. 33 For example, if you see the word “imitation”, you can recognize the suffix “-tion”, which often forms nouns. You might also know the root word “imitate”. So you can guess that “imitation” means the act of imitating.
You can also use the overall meaning of the passage. 34 If the passage is about learning a new language, and you see the word “comprehend”, you can guess it means “understand”.
35 With practice, you can become better at inferring the meanings of new words and improve your reading comprehension.
A.The more you read, the more words you will learn.
B.The text clues can be the words before and after the new word.
C.Prefixes and suffixes can give you clues about the word’s meaning.
D.However, you don’t have to worry about them.
E.This is a useful skill called “inferring”.
F.The main idea of the passage can help you guess the meaning of unfamiliar words.
G.You should always look up new words in a dictionary.

Chinglish Takes Flight
“You swan (天鹅), he frog.” This sentence might sound funny in English. But it is lively! Both Chinese and foreigners can understand and enjoy it. It is an example of Chinglish.
Chinglish is a mix of Chinese and English. Now, it is quite popular outside China. It all started when a foreign girl put a sad photo online. It seemed that her boyfriend had made her cry. Some nice Chinese people created some funny Chinglish, such as “You swan, he frog” to cheer her up. The expression comes from a famous old Chinese story. It’s about a beautiful swan and an ugly toad (癞蛤蟆).
Many foreigners found it cool. They shared it online and made funny pictures with it. Some of them got interested in the Chinese stories behind Chinglish. It helps a lot to understand Chinese culture better. Sometimes, Chinglish works as a bridge connecting two cultures.
But for young English learners like us, it’s still important to use standard (标准) English, especially in tests and in formal situations. Standard English helps people understand each other more clearly.
We must know when to cross the bridge and when to stay in the “main road” of standard
English. After all, being able to use Chinglish properly and also communicate well in standard English makes you a true language user!
66.What is Chinglish
67.Where does the expression “You swan, he frog” come from
68.Translate the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 into Chinese.
69.Why should we use standard English at formal situations
70.According to the passage, what makes you a true language user

参考答案及试题解析
1.A 2.B 3.C 4.B 5.C 6.A 7.C 8.B 9.A 10.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了肢体语言在跨文化交际中的重要性,通过日本、中国、印度等国家在问候、点头、招手等肢体动作上的差异,说明了了解不同文化背景下肢体语言含义的必要性,以帮助人们避免误解、更好地交流。
【解析】1.句意:然而,不同的文化使用肢体语言的方式各不相同。
前句“Body language is very important in communication.”指出肢体语言在交流中很重要,后句“different cultures have different ways of using it”说明不同文化使用方式不同,前后构成转折关系。However“然而”符合逻辑。Therefore“因此”表因果、Also“也”表递进、Instead“相反”,均不符合此处的转折语境。
2.句意:例如,在日本,人们见面时会鞠躬。
根据后句“They also bow to say ‘thank you’, ‘goodbye’, or ‘sorry’.”
根据后句“You should use your whole hand instead.”
根据后句“It can help you avoid misunderstandings and communicate better.”
make a good impression是固定搭配,意为“留下好印象”。make“做,制造”符合搭配。do“做”、take“拿”、give“给”,均不能与“a good impression”构成正确搭配。

My Language Learning Plan
Hello, everyone. I’d like to share my language learning plan.
My main difficulty is following natural English speech. From this week, I will listen to a one-minute report twice each day. Key words will be written down, and then I will retell the main idea in my own words. On Fridays, my recording will be compared with the original to check stress and rhythm. I will also speak with a partner for ten minutes every weekend.
I hope that after one month I will understand more details and speak with greater confidence.
