Food is like a magical bridge and it connects people from different places and backgrounds. Let me tell you a story about my friend Li Rong.
Last year, Li went to America to study. The food there was very different from that in China. She missed the warm soups, spicy (麻辣的) noodles, and fresh dumplings from China. At school, Li felt a bit lonely because she didn’t know anyone. One day, during lunchtime, a girl named Olivia saw Li sitting at the table by herself. So she invited Li to join her and her friends for lunch.
Olivia’s friends all had brought different kinds of food from their countries. There was pizza from Italy, sushi from Japan, and hamburgers from America. Li felt a little nervous at first, but when she tried the different foods, she said, “How delicious they are!” She also shared her dumplings with everyone, and they all loved them.
From that day on, Li and Olivia became good friends. They started sharing and cooking together after school. Li learned so much about the culture of Olivia’s country through the food they shared. This experience with Olivia showed Li that food and friendship could cross borders (边界).

Have you ever heard that you should drink eight glasses of water every day Lots of grownups try to drink so much water to stay healthy. But scientists have found that there’s no perfect number of water glasses for everyone.
In a study, researchers checked out 5,600 people. These people included babies just one week old and greatgrandparents aged 96! The researchers wanted to learn how much water goes into our body and then comes out. They discovered that everyone needs a different amount of water. How much water you need depends on things like your age, how long you run and play, and whether you are a boy or a girl. For example, young men around 20 to 35 years old need almost twice as much water as men in their nineties!
Also, scientists noticed a difference. Very active people need more water than less active people. And here’s a fun fact: the foods we eat also have water in them!
The scientists from this study think most of us don’t really need to drink eight glasses of water every day. Our bodies are good at telling us when we’re thirsty. So the best thing to do is to listen to your body and drink water when you feel thirsty. And don’t forget: having fun is also a great way to stay healthy, just like drinking water!
33. The writer starts the passage ________.
A.by telling a story B.by using a saying C.by asking a question D.by giving an example
