In a disaster, you may not stay as calm as you thought before. Many people’s behavior can even put them in greater danger.
One common but dangerous response (反应) is to freeze and do nothing. Sometimes, people don’t believe they are really in danger, so they ignore (忽视) what is happening.
What’s more, stress makes clear thinking difficult. For example, during a house fire, people might run back into a burning building for their wallets without thinking. You should try to avoid this kind of situation for your safety.
So, how can you improve your chances of surviving a disaster The key is to be prepared ahead of time. Being prepared helps you act quickly without thinking too much. We can know danger early if we learn the warning signs of different natural disasters.
You also need to be prepared, even after the danger passes. In big disasters like earthquakes or typhoons, it takes time for rescuers (营救人员) to find everyone in need. In order to survive, make sure to have a disaster plan and a meeting place for your family.

Planting is easy. However, taking good care of a plant can be difficult. Many people are not sure how often or how much they need to water their plants. Even some farmers may have the same problem. Luckily, a new technology called GrowStream (智能灌溉系统) can help them “talk” to their plants.
GrowStream is a watering system. Its tubes (管子) have special small holes (洞) in them. When plants need water, they will give out some special chemicals (化学物质). When the holes discover these chemicals, they will open. The plants then get water from these holes. When the plants have drunk enough water, they stop giving out these chemicals. And that “tells” the holes to close and stop watering.
GrowStream can help save 45% to 50% more water than common watering systems. It was created by a company (公司). Now the company is active in more than 40 countries and the number is growing.
“GrowStream is more than just a technology,” said the CEO of the company. “We want it to “talk” to people, too. It “says” two things: the earth’s natural resources (资源) are limited (有限的), and we should take better care of the planet. The next step of our company is to make good use of the new technology.”
9. What is the problem in taking care of plants
A.How can a plant grow best in poor areas
B.What plants can we grow in different places
C.Why does a plant live better without enough water
D.How often or how much do plants need to be watered

12. What is the passage

四、任务型阅读
阅读短文,然后根据内容回答问题。
I lived in the countryside when I was young. At that time, I didn’t know it was good for me. But when I grew up, I found I learned more useful skills than other children in the city.
I started learning to cook when I was ten years old. The first skill I learned was how to make dough (面团). In my hometown of Ningxia, people usually start making noodles in the evening. Since my parents often came home late, preparing the dough early helped my family have dinner sooner. I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mom do it — just mix water and flour (面粉), right Not really! At first, I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. It was a mess for a while. But as I kept trying, I slowly learned how to get it right.
Later, I learned to cook other things like fried dishes and dumplings. I began to enjoy cooking. It became a great way for me to relax.
Now, when I work from home, my cooking skills help me a lot. I cook every meal myself instead of ordering delivery (外卖). This saves money, and I don’t have to wait for food to arrive.
Maybe that’s why I’m so glad to see that students in China now have labor (劳动) education classes at school. These useful life skills — like cooking — will help them in the future.
