Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after Labour Day (first Monday in September) in the US, did not start for business reasons but because of a determined woman, Marian McQuade.
McQuade began caring for the elderly when she was a child. After chores (家务) were done, she would help elderly neighbours with her grandmother, often taking along food and gifts. These experiences and her close relationship with her grandmother planted the seeds for a lifetime of helping the elderly.
When McQuade grew up, she became a housewife. She took care of her kids and had many grandchildren. She believed that spending time with elderly loved ones was very important and wanted to create a holiday where families could enjoy themselves together. In the early 1970s, she started her journey to make the holiday a reality.
She kept calling and writing letters to the local and state leaders until she finally got attention in 1973 from Senator Jennings Randolph. He introduced to the Senate (参议院) the idea of making Grandparents Day a national holiday. His plan fell through in the Senate, but McQuade didn’t get discouraged. After years of efforts, her hard work paid off. On August 3rd, 1978, the president officially made Grandparents Day a national holiday. He also stated how important it was to honour grandparents and understand the value of family.
Although Grandparents Day began in the US, it is now celebrated in many other countries. In Germany, Grandparents Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in October. In Mexico, it is on August 28th, when children often prepare a special meal for their grandparents or give gifts to them.

Many people may throw away the nuts (果核) after eating fruits, but artists of nut carving (核雕) have instead collected them and turned them into artworks.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be made into beautiful earrings and other artworks,” said Tan Wanhui, the top artist of Weifang nut carving.
The history of nut carving might start from the Qing Dynasty (16361912). During that time, Wang Dayan, the best artist in the Palace Museum, spread the skill to the local people in Shandong Province. Because of the difficult carving skills required and its rich artistic meanings, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
“It’s hard to bring this kind of traditional art to life,” said Tan, the 48yearold artist. “Every nut looks different before being carved,” Tan added. Artists have to study each nut to carefully plan out their artwork. Besides, according to Tan, they have to learn about some skills in painting and handwriting art from many traditional cultures. “In order to show folk stories from ancient times, I need to read many books to enrich myself.”
“Artists in the past have been wise enough to turn common things into objects of beauty. In recent years, thanks to the creative ideas of artists in Weifang, nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China”, Tan said. “This popularity, in turn, has also attracted many young people to learn the traditional skills of nut carving, create new skills and even help to pass down the skills to future artists. ”

C.By describing its historical origin. D.By comparing different uses of nuts.

18. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A.Nut carving requires natural talent for drawing.
B.Nut carving artists must copy traditional designs.
C.Artists use nuts of the same size to make nut carving.
D.Nut carving artists should learn different traditional skills
19. What is the structure of this passage
A.①/②③④/⑤ B.①②/③④⑤ C.①/②③④⑤ D.①②/③④/⑤
20. What will the writer talk about next

Over the past 100 years, an important idea has become popular in education. Before, people thought intelligence was inborn. But now, we know that intelligence can change with the right training. In the 19th century, psychologist Alfred Binet, who made the first intelligence tests, believed intelligence was fixed and tried to measure it. However, in the early 20th century, thinkers like John Dewey said every child’s intelligence could grow with a good environment.
Dweck’s famous experiment divided 10 to 12yearolds into two groups. One group was praised for being smart, while the other for working hard. The “effortpraised” group tried harder on later tasks, while the “smartpraised” group avoided challenges to protect their selfimage. This showed that praising effort, not talent, helps students improve.
However, schools often have difficulty in using growth mindset (思维模式) ideas effectively. Many focus too much on test scores and rankings, which actually encourage a “fixed mindset.”. Some schools even create contradictions (矛盾) by talking about growth mindset while giving fixed grades based on performance.
Critics point out problems with growth mindset research. Studies trying to repeat Dweck’s experiments often fail. Psychologist Timothy Bates found that students with growth mindsets didn’t get better grades. Statistician (统计学家) Andrew Gelman questioned whether the research truly proved the theory.
Recent studies show growth mindset programs rarely improve grades. Posters and motivational speeches often fail. Instead, teaching practical skills (like writing essay introductions) and praising effort works better. True confidence comes from real achievements, not empty praise. Perhaps growth mindset works better as a teaching philosophy than a classroom tool.
21. What did Alfred Binet believe about intelligence
A.Intelligence was based on a person’s effort.
B.Intelligence was something fixed and could be measured.
C.Intelligence could be developed with the right environment.
D.Every child’s intelligence was different and unchangeable.
22. In Carol Dweck’s experiment, what happened to the group praised for intelligence
A.They were more likely to work hard on future tasks.
B.They took on more difficult tasks to prove their ability.
C.They avoided tasks that might cause them to fail.
D.They changed their mindset after the experiment.
23. How is Paragraph 3 developed
A.By stating a problem and explaining its causes.
B.By comparing school’s past and present methods.
C.By giving personal stories on fixed grades.
D.By listing research steps to implement a growth mindset.
24. What might the author agree with
A.Motivational posters are the best way to teach.
B.Fixed grades help students develop a growth mindset.
C.Dweck’s experiments perfectly prove her theory.
D.Teaching real skills is better than empty praise.
