Many people think space is cold, quiet and boring. However, China’s Tiangong Space Station gives us a different answer. For Chinese taikonauts, the space station is not only a place for science work, but also a warm home with many fun activities. The wonderful life in space also shows the great progress of China’s space industry.
One unforgettable highlight in Tiangong is the space barbecue. In 2025, Chinese scientists created a special smokeless oven for space use. Astronauts from Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 cooked tasty chicken wings and steak. They baked the food at 180℃ for 28 minutes. Because of the special zero-gravity environment, the food slowly floats and turns around. Six astronauts shared the delicious hot food together, just like having a happy party in space.
Besides enjoying hot meals, astronauts are also hard-working “space gardeners”. There is a small high-tech farm inside the space station. Up to now, astronauts have planted several kinds of plants, such as lettuce, small tomatoes and sweet potatoes. They use special lights to help plants grow and take good care of them every day. So far, they have harvested more than 4.5 kilograms of fresh vegetables. What’s amazing is that lettuce and tomatoes can grow from seeds and finally produce new seeds in space. This is an important success for long-time space living.
Space life is full of warmth, especially during Chinese traditional festivals. Now astronauts have over 190 kinds of space food to choose from. During the Spring Festival, Tianzhou cargo spaceships sent special gifts and festival food to the station. Astronauts could put up Spring Festival couplets, write calligraphy and eat floating dumplings. These familiar foods made them feel less lonely far away from home.

It was March and the English Week at Sunshine Middle School arrived. This year was the Year of the Horse, and students learned horse proverbs.
Li Ming, a shy Grade 8 student, was terrible at speaking English. He was afraid of being laughed at. When Ms. Wang announced a speech contest, Li Ming wanted to try but gave up. “I can’t do it,” he thought.
On the first day of the English Week, Li Ming saw a poster “No pain, no gain.” Ms. Wang’s words echoed (回响) in his mind “Like a horse, you must run hard to reach the finish line because practice makes perfect.” Li Ming was so excited that he decided to finish his speech. He wanted to do everything quickly—he even planned to practice a hundred times that night. So he wrote a short speech about the Year of the Horse and practiced in front of a mirror again and again. His little sister laughed and said to him, “Hold your horses.” But he didn’t want to slow down at all.
The contest day came. Li Ming’s hands were sweating. When his name was called, he walked onto the stage. He spoke fast—and made a mistake. His face turned red. He wanted to run away. But then he saw Ms. Wang smiling at him. He took a deep breath and kept going. He talked about overcoming fear and how the Year of the Horse gave him courage. He quoted some proverbs. When he finished, the room burst into applause. Li Ming couldn’t believe it. In the end, he won the third prize. He almost cried with joy.
After the contest, a classmate whispered (悄悄地说), “Li Ming, you used the wrong proverb just now. ‘No pain, no gain’ isn’t about horses.” Li Ming froze. Then he laughed. “Maybe not. But I still gained something—courage.” Ms. Wang heard this and smiled. “Exactly. Every horse thinks its own pack heaviest. You worked hard and you made it.”
From the English Week, Li Ming learned that mistakes don’t matter, but trying does.
