Alice said, “First of all, it’s really good that you noticed this. You’re clearly a kind and considerate person! It’s not your fault that other people are mean. It can be hard to know what to do in situations like this, so you shouldn’t feel bad about it.”
She said these things to show understanding and make Ben feel better about himself.

Alice: Good afternoon and welcome to Alice’s Answers. Our first caller is Ben calling from London. Hello, Ben. How can I help you
Ben: Well, something happened yesterday afternoon. It made me feel really uncomfortable. I was travelling home on the underground after school. Three older boy students from a local senior high school got on the same train. They looked really unfriendly.
Alice: What happened then
Ben: There was a young boy sitting in the same part of the train. He was travelling alone. The older boys walked up to the young one, sat down beside him and started to make jokes about him. The boy didn’t say anything. He simply got up and moved to another seat, but they just followed him.
Alice: So what happened next
Ben: I wanted to help him, but the older boys were much bigger than me. Besides, at that moment, the train reached my station, so I had to get off and go home. Luckily, the boy got off at the same station too. I’ve been thinking a lot about it afterwards. I felt ashamed of myself because I didn’t help him. What should I do if this happens again
Alice: First of all, it’s really good that you noticed this. You’re clearly a kind and considerate person! It’s not your fault that other people are mean. It can be hard to know what to do in situations like this, so you shouldn’t feel bad about it. Here are some general suggestions about what to do. Next time you see someone in trouble, but cannot help them yourself, I think you should tell adults nearby and ask them for help. Also, make sure you’re safe before you try to help others. If the situation is really bad, you should try to find a police officer.
