What is an agony aunt
One very popular section in many newspapers and magazines is the “agony aunt” column. The reason for the strange name is simple: agony aunts answer difficult questions from readers. For example, the readers may ask, “I’m not getting on well with my classmates—what should I do ” or “My daughter isn’t doing well in school, and I’m worried about her future—how should I talk to her ”
The first “agony aunt” column appeared in 1691 in a magazine called the Athenian Gazette. The magazine quickly became very popular, especially among women. The editors received hundreds of letters with all kinds of questions. Other magazines and newspapers soon started their own advice columns too.
In China, there is a famous “agony aunt” column called Zhixin Jiejie (“Sister Understanding”). The column began in the 1960s in Chinese Teenagers News and has helped several generations of teenagers deal with problems. Every week, Zhixin Jiejie receives lots of letters from children, and the team behind do their best to provide helpful advice. Today, Zhixin Jiejie is more than just an advice column: it now operates a helpline for children, and the column has turned into a magazine. Nowadays, it can also be found on social media, and its online articles have hundreds of thousands of readers every week. Today, good advice is just a click away!
The column’s most famous “sister” is Lu Qin. She has been working in the Zhixin Jiejie team since the 1980s. She recognizes that children face new problems in today’s world, such as pressure from study and addiction to computer games, so she does her best to help them deal with these challenges. She thinks it is important for teenagers to learn how to communicate with others and solve problems. Through her advice column, she teaches young people about responsibility, kindness and love. She also answers questions from parents.

Narrator: Life can be tough sometimes with school work, tests, chores, and just keeping up with your friends. So it’s important to take time to look after yourself. You could go for a walk, have fun with friends, try a new sport or just chill out. Today, I’m meeting a world champion who has definitely found an activity to help him switch off.
Narrator: Oh hi, you must be Ishwar.
Ishwar: Yeah, that’s e on in.
Narrator: So I hear this is how you help deal with stress.
Ishwar: Yes. It’s called yoga. It helps me a lot of the time.
Narrator: So how did you first get into yoga
Ishwar: I was watching my dad when I was very young, and I started doing it myself.
Narrator: How does it help you
Ishwar: Yoga helps me concentrate. It also helps me release stress, and it helps me stay calmer and happier overall.
Narrator: Ishwar used to fidget a lot at school, but he’s found having an activity like yoga makes a real difference.
Ishwar: It helps me focus on my work at school and homework. It sure helps me concentrate. And my teachers have seen an improvement in me.
Narrator: I mean that’s amazing. Ishwar was about to have a yoga lesson and he let me join the class. Alright then, here we go. Breathe in, and out. Oh dear, I’m not quite touching my toes just yet. It was soon pretty clear that I’d never done yoga before.

Narrator: Definitely harder than it looks. It was quite challenging. I’m not sure yoga is the right activity for me, but Ishwar has really taken it to another level. This looks cool. So explain to me what’s going on here.
Ishwar: That’s acroyoga, exactly in this picture. I’m taking part in a championship. They work a bit like gymnastics competitions. So the harder the posture, the more points you get.
Narrator: And Ishwar has a great track record.
Ishwar: So I’ve won every single one that I’ve gone to.
Narrator: Not everyone can be a champion like Ishwar. The important thing is to get involved in an activity you enjoy, which needs lots of focus and concentration. This can help take your mind off other things which may be worrying you and manage them better. Thank you so much for talking to me.
Ishwar: Thank you for coming.
Narrator: What an interesting day it’s been meeting Ishwar. I can see that for him, yoga helps with the schoolwork. It makes him feel happier. I’ve learnt today that finding the right activity for you makes a big impact! I’m feeling more relaxed and less stressed.
