Are you nature lovers Have you ever visited China’s Zhangye Geopark (地质公园) The most amazing view in it is the Rainbow Mountains. These are not tall, pointed mountains, but soft, wave like hills with many different colors. If you see them from above, it’s like you’re looking at rainbows painted on the ground.
Millions of years ago, this area lay under a lake. At first, rivers brought in sand and stones with different kinds of metal elements (元素). Over time, these were left in layers (层) at the bottom of the lake. Some layers were red, some yellow, and others turned purple or blue. Later, as the climate became colder and drier, the lake dried up. Then, something amazing happened! The underground layers began to rise up and push against each other. The layers of sandstone were lifted higher and higher. Wind and rain began to erode the soft rock, slowly breaking it into pieces and carrying small pieces away. Finally, the hills were shaped into the beautiful waves we see today. The dry weather in the area helps protect these shapes, and makes the landscape last for a long time.

The marathon (马拉松) is a famous long distance race with a history of over 2,500 years. Its name comes from an ancient Greek story. A soldier ran from Marathon to Athens (雅典) to share news of a victory. Today, marathons are held worldwide, and follow a standard distance (标准距离) of 42.195 kilometers. There are full marathons, half marathons and shorter fun runs (like 5K or 10K). People can choose as they like.
Modern marathons welcome professional runners, beginners, and even wheelchair athletes. For most people, it’s not about winning but about trying their best. Training takes months of running, exercise, and healthy eating. Many runners say sticking to the training plan is harder than the race itself.
In China, marathons are now popular across the country: Big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen hold at least 10 exciting races every year. The Beijing Marathon, first held in 1981, now attracts over 30,000 runners every year. The Shanghai Marathon has a beautiful route along the Huangpu River, while the Xiamen Marathon is known for its seaside views. Even small towns are joining in. In 2023, a marathon in a mountain village in Guizhou invited farmers and students to run through terraced fields (梯田), mixing sports with local culture.
These events are held to get people to exercise and help local development. In the Guangzhou Marathon, families run together in “parent child races”, and older runners over 70 wear bright ribbons (彩带) to show their energy. Finishing the race, no matter the time, makes everyone proud. Let’s start running together!
