On August 24th, 2025, a strong typhoon called Swordfish (剑鱼) hit Sanya. I will never forget how terrible that day was.
It seemed like the whole city was quiet, waiting for the storm. I stayed at home, sitting by the window and watching outside. The wind blew so hard that the sky was in a mess. There were leaves and rubbish everywhere. Dark clouds covered the city. Suddenly, the power was cut off while the winds were blowing like a monster. It was so scary that I covered my ears tightly, wishing the typhoon would stop soon.
About fifteen minutes later, the strong wind came with heavy rain. Even the big trees were blown down! On my phone, I saw the Luhuitou Statue was badly hurt. Huge waves were hitting it hard. The typhoon didn’t stop until 9 p.m. When I went downstairs, I was shocked to see fallen trees everywhere. The neighborhood looked like a “broken forest”.
Without thinking twice, I joined the clean-up. I helped move small branches off the road and swept up broken glass. My neighbor, Uncle Li, handed me a pair of gloves and said, “Let’s work together”. Soon, more people came. Some used tools to cut down the fallen trees. Others carried away the rubbish. A group of volunteers brought us water and food.
Firefighters arrived too, helping clean the main street. Seeing everyone working side by side, I felt warm inside. The typhoon broke many things, but it brought people closer. We learned that we are never alone in hard times.

Foxes with nine tails, animals with human faces and fish bodies, turtles with bird heads and snake tails, these magical animals are from Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas). This old book played an important role in the world and inspired (给予灵感) today’s works. Let’s learn more about it!
Shan Hai Jing took shape before the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). Like an encyclopedia (百科全书), it writes about the world in the eyes of people at that time. The 30,000-word book records about 40 states, 550 mountains, 300 rivers, more than 100 people in history and 400 interesting animals.
Shan Hai Jing had a deep influence on the culture of mythology (神话学) in the world. It was taken to Japan during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties, or much earlier. In Japan, it was popular. People there once saw it as a guidebook for traveling in China. The book’s monsters (怪兽) were also popular.
Shan Hai Jing has inspired many works. Liu Siliang is a teacher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He said the book inspired the writing of Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio 《聊斋志异》. Pop culture works also borrow ideas from the book. Some of the animals in the book even go into movies, such as Zouwu, the star monster in Shan Hai Jing. It has a tiger-body with stripes of five colors. Its tail is longer than its body. It can travel 1,600 kilometers in a day. We can see it in the popular movie Fantastic Beasts II in 2021.

Dear Peter,
I’m so excited to hear that you are coming to China soon.
I know you may feel worried about visiting China for the first time. I completely understand your feelings, because cultural differences can be challenging.
Here is some useful advice to help you. First of all, when greeting people, a warm handshake with a smile is polite. Second, regarding table manners, it’s customary to wait for the host to start eating first. What's more, when giving gifts, use both hands to show respect.
I hope you will have a wonderful trip in China and enjoy your stay. If you need any more help, just let me know.
See you soon!
