Last Friday, our school organised a visit to a local agricultural base.Given that most students knew little about food production, the trip aimed to deepen our understanding of rural life.
The activities comprised two parts.First, farmers showed us conventional planting methods and alternative techniques like drip irrigation, which reduces water consumption. Then,we tried picking vegetables, and learned how to tackle pests without harmful chemicals.
I was convinced that such experiences could boost students' awareness of food conservation. It was inspiring to see how science and devotion make agriculture efficient. This trip taught us to value every bite of food.

It seems evident that forests would provide better habitat for birds than farms.Yet,Stanford researchers found that over 18 years, smaller farms with varying crop types—mixed with belts or bands of forest—sustain many forest-dependent bird populations in Costa Rica, even as populations decline in forests.
In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nicholas Hendershot and his team members compared trends in specific bird populations across three landscape types in Costa Rica: forests, diversified farms, and intensive agriculture. The sharpest declines were found in forests, then in intensive agriculture. But on diversified farms,a significant group of bird species typically found in forests, including some of conservation concern, actually increased over time.
While this research implies that diversified farming could be key to biodiversity, the relationship goes both ways: biodiversity is key to food security. In this case, that means having a variety of types of birds feeding on insects and helping to pollinate (给……授粉) crops.“Identity does seem to matter a lot for pest (害虫) control and other ecosystem services birds provide,” said Hendershot.
It has become increasingly apparent around the world that while protected areas remain critical, they are too few and far between to provide the ecosystem services people and nature need.Working landscapes are crucial now for preserving biodiversity and its benefits.“People, including scientists, had the idea that farmland would not support a meaningful amount of biodiversity,” said Hendershot. In this case, however, not only are diversified farms themselves providing habitat, they connect otherwise separated forested areas.
In the 1980s and 90s,deforestation was occurring in Costa Rica at the fastest rate ever seen. Then,by setting up the world's first countrywide payments for ecosystem services (PES) program, they turned it around.
The country currently aims to double the amount of protected forest in just a few years. In its existing PES program, any landowner can receive money for reforesting even small parts of their land. Now,the government is also working toward a new PES program to encourage farmers to adopt best management practices. This study will help inform Costa Rican policymakers in understanding the benefits provided over time by different farming practices.
4.What did Stanford researchers find about diversified farms
A.They mix well with forests.
B.They support various bird species.
C.They contribute to soil conservation.
D.They produce less than intensive agriculture.
5.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Natural ways of pest control.
B.Methods to maintain food security.
C.Birds' significant role in agriculture.
D.The importance of a balanced ecosystem.
6.Why are protected areas insufficient for preserving biodiversity
A.They are thinly distributed.
B.They are far from natural habitats.
C.They are in need of constant care.
D.They are easily affected by human activities.
根据第四段中的“protected areas remain critical, they are too few and far between to provide the ecosystem services people and nature need”可知,尽管保护区至关重要,但它们数量太少且分布稀疏,无法提供人类和自然所需的生态系统服务。
7.What might be the study's implication for Costa Rica
A.More farmland will be forested.
B.Farming will become easier to do.
C.Payment for the PES program will increase.
D.Farms and forests will develop together in harmony.
Water by its very nature is always pure. The problem is that almost all of the world's water supply must share space with organic materials, chemicals, minerals and manmade pollutants. 1 Fortunately, mankind has developed a number of water treatment methods which make our water supply much safer for consumption.
Perhaps the most basic form of water treatment is called settling.Untreated water gathered from a natural source can be left undisturbed in a container, allowing solids to fall to the bottom. After enough time has passed, the uppermost level of water can be drawn out for consumption. 2 The settling process can take several days or weeks to be effective, and there is no protection against bacteria (细菌) or other organic materials which may not settle out.If the water source is relatively clean, such as a mountain stream in remote territory, the settling method may be reliable.
3 Water should first be filtered (过滤) through a cloth to remove larger pollutants, then placed in a clean metal container.Virtually every bacterium or other harmful life forms will not survive the boiling process, although experts suggest maintaining a rolling boil for several minutes to ensure success.
One form of water treatment which works on a large scale (规模) is chemical disinfection.Questionable water can be changed to drinkable by the addition of special tablets. 4
For homeowners concerned about their public water supplies, filtration through activated charcoal(活性炭)is a low-cost method used in many private homes. 5
Heavy metals, organic pollutants, and many bacteria are too large to pass through this net.The water molecules (分子) which do pass through are much more pure, providing a better-tasting product.
A.The result is often an undrinkable solution.
B.Filters must be changed regularly to be effective.
C.This method has several major limitations, however.
D.Chemical water treatment is also a preferred method.
E.The principle behind the method involves a filter net.
F.A more thorough and faster form of water treatment is boiling.
G.They can destroy many of the bacteria in natural water supplies.
根据本段中的关键信息“will not survive the boiling process”和“maintaining a rolling boil for several minutes”可知,本段介绍的方法是煮沸,故F项符合语境,其中的“boiling”是本段主题词汇。

Dear Editor,
I'm Li Hua. After thinking carefully, I'm in favour of setting up the “Read & Act Mini-Drama Club”.
Compared with a book review exhibition, acting out stories makes English reading more vivid. When we adapt plots and perform roles, we'll dive deeper into the characters' emotions and understand the text better. This interactive way can greatly arouse our interest in English books and encourage more classmates to borrow and read them.
I hope that my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua

(2026·福建省龙岩市九校联考)The rain tapped hard on the classroom window as I hurried to my desk. Suddenly, I spotted something small and brown curled up in a puddle (小水洼) under an oak tree beside our teaching building — too still to be a leaf. With curiosity, I rushed out to it. However, when I knelt down, my breath caught: a sparrow with one wing broken, feathers knotted, eyes half-closed.“Don't move,” I whispered, wrapping her in my handkerchief, then dashed back.
Ms Sophie, my English teacher, helped me make a nest from a shoebox and tissues. “We need to act fast,” she said. “Who knows about birds?” Mia, who fed stray cats daily, raised her hand, “My uncle is a vet — he can show us how to cure the wing.” Jake, our art club member, grabbed his drawing book, “I'll draw diagrams so we won't mess up.” Lila, who usually kept to herself, spoke up: “I can research what sparrows eat online.”
That afternoon, our group crowded around the shoebox. Mia gently held the sparrow while Jake carefully attached a small stick to her broken wing. Lila read aloud from her phone: “Warm water and crushed blueberries, but only a drop at a time.” I took notes, marking when we fed her or changed the tissues. At one point, the sparrow chirped (发啁啾声) softly, and we all froze, grinning. For the first time, we weren't just classmates—we were a team, each doing what we did best.
Problems popped up. The sparrow refused food the next day, and Lila panicked. “Did we hurt her?” Mia checked and shook her head. “Maybe she's scared. Let's leave her alone for a while.” We took turns sitting by the window, talking softly so she would get used to our voices.

By Friday, something different happened. The little sparrow raised her head and pecked at blueberries from my finger. Slowly, she struggled to her feet, turning her head from side to side. At the moment, happiness and emotion welled up into our hearts. The sparrow came back to life. We cheered happily because our effort paid off. Three weeks later, we cautiously removed the small stick from her wing. For a second, she managed to hop on the edge of the box and made her first attempt to flutter wings. The wing was nearly recovered.
Then came the news that the vet said the sparrow was ready to fly. We carried her to the oak tree, where we'd found her. Immediately, she spread her wings and flew. With a cheerful call, she dived towards us, and lowered to stand on my shoulder, as if expressing her gratitude for saving her life to us, reluctant to leave. After circling again and again, she disappeared into the sky. At this time I fully understand not only do human beings have deep affection, but also other species.
