Xie Lei, a 19-year-old Chinese business student, took part in a year-long exchange programme in London six months ago. It was her first time leaving China, filled with both excitement and nervousness. She chose this opportunity to learn about global business and improve her English, aiming to set up her own company in China after graduation.
Originally, it was daunting to get used to a new environment. Xie Lei had to learn to find her way with public transport and handle daily communication, often struggling with unfamiliar vocabulary and the speed of native speakers. Rather than living on campus, she chose a host family, which provided great comfort and cultural support. They shared common interest — while Xie Lei learned about British life, the family, especially their daughter Laura, developed a strong interest in Chinese culture. Xie Lei even taught Laura how to cook a classic Chinese dish.
Another challenge for Xie Lei was the academic (学术的) requirements. The first time she had to write an essay, her teacher explained that she must acknowledge (承认) what other people had said if she used their ideas for reference (参考), but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought Xie Lei was confused (困惑的) because she thought she knew less than other people. Her teacher advised her to read lots of information in order to form a wise opinion of her own.
Now halfway through her exchange, Xie Lei feels much more at ease. She has taken part in social activities and shares Chinese culture with locals, seeing herself as a cultural communicator. Her journey is not only about business studies — it’s also about connecting between cultures.

A.To prepare for her future career. B.To travel and experience British life.

A.Writing more essays. B.Clearing up confusion timely.
C.Developing her own viewpoints. D.Referring to others’ ideas more.
7.What does Xie Lei’s experience show
A.Knowledge is power. B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Look before you leap. D.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
8.What did the new research find
A.Running fast benefits all of us.
B.Running is the best exercise.
C.A healthy mind encourages us to run.
D.A short time run can be of benefit.
9.How did the researchers get the result
A.By using different drugs on participants.
B.By interviewing some sportsmen.
C.By collecting information on the Internet
D.By doing experiments and comparisons.
10.Which is related to our happiness
A.Cycling. B.Medicine. C.Blood flow. D.Colors.
11.What is the main idea of the text
A.We should go for a run in winter.
B.Running really benefits us mentally.
C.We are supposed to do a lot of exercise.
D.Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.
School uniform policies could be preventing young people from being active, particularly primary school-aged girls, new research suggests. The Cambridge study used data about the physical activity participation (参与) of more than a million young people aged 5 to 17 internationally. It found that in countries where most schools require students to wear uniforms, fewer young people meet the 60 minutes of physical activity per day recommended by the WHO.
Among primary school students, the difference in physical activity between girls and boys was found to be wider in countries where uniforms were common. The same result was not found in secondary school-aged students. This could be explained by the fact that younger children move more throughout the school day than older students, for example, through running or climbing at break and lunchtime. It proves that girls feel less comfortable in joining in active play if they are wearing certain types of clothing, such as skirts or dresses.
Dr Mairead Ryan from the University of Cambridge, said, “Schools often prefer to use uniforms for different reasons. We are not trying to suggest a blanket ban (禁令) on them, but to present new facts to support decision-making. School communities could consider design, and whether certain characteristics of a uniform might either encourage or limit any opportunities for physical activity across the day.”
A 2021 study in England found that the design of girls’ PE uniforms prevented students from joining in certain activities. Other studies have suggested that girls feel insecure about joining in physical activity when wearing uniforms in which they do not feel comfortable.
“Girls might feel less confident about doing things like cartwheels and tumbles in the playground, or riding a bike on a windy day, if they are wearing skirts or dresses,” said Dr Esther Van Sluijs. “Social rules and expectations often influence what they feel they can do in these clothes. Unfortunately, when it comes to promoting physical health, that’s a problem.”
12.What does the new research show
A.Fewer primary school-aged girls like physical activity.
B.Fewer young people can meet the WHO recommended standards.
C.School uniform policies could encourage young people to be more active.
D.School uniform policies may be limiting the activity level of young people.
13.Which age group was found to be more influenced by the uniform policies
A.5-to-10-year-old girls. B.5-to-10-year-old boys.
C.11-to-17-year-old girls. D.11-to-17-year-old boys.
14.What does Dr Ryan suggest schools do
A.Encourage students to wear comfortable clothes.
B.Ban students from wearing uniforms completely.
C.Require students to wear uniforms only in PE classes.
D.Consider the design of uniforms when making decisions.
15.According to Dr Sluijs, what causes girls to feel less confident in physical activities
A.The weather conditions.
B.Type of activities they choose.
C.Their clothes and social expectations.
D.Their inability to do well in some sports.
