Unit 4 Amazing Plants and Animals
Section B Vocabulary in Use
Content analysis
This material comes from the Vocabulary in Use section of the English textbook, centering on vocabulary learning and comprehensive language application. It comprises four tiered practice activities. Activity 2a asks students to find the odd word out in word groups to discriminate vocabulary from multiple perspectives. Activity 2b focuses on word formation, guiding students to create nouns using suffixes such as ance, -(t)ion, ness and ity. Activity 2c requires students to fill in single sentences with correct word forms. Activity 2d is a cloze task about frogs’ ecological roles, where students apply proper word forms in a thematic short passage, integrating vocabulary practice with ecological thematic cognition.
In terms of vocabulary competence, these activities help students build a complete vocabulary learning chain: from vocabulary discrimination and summarizing word formation rules to contextual vocabulary application. It supports students in developing a scientific vocabulary cognitive system involving part of speech, word meaning and pragmatic usage. For core literacy development, the frog themed cloze in 2d enables students to practise vocabulary while recognizing frogs’ ecological significance. It raises students’ ecological protection awareness and realizes the integration of language training and interdisciplinary natural ecology literacy.
The four activities adopt a scaffolded, logically ordered task design, which is consistent with the rules of language acquisition. Tasks progress from basic vocabulary discrimination and word formation practice, to word form transformation in separate sentences, and finally to comprehensive cloze in a thematic context. Tasks advance from simple to complex, laying gradual support for vocabulary mastery. Meanwhile, the frog related theme embeds ecological education into vocabulary drills, achieving the organic combination of language skill training and thematic meaning exploration.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this section, students will be able to:
1. analyze vocabulary differences from multiple dimensions including part of speech, semantics, pragmatics and emotional connotation, and build a scientific cognitive system for vocabulary learning;
2. apply noun suffixes ance, -(t)ion, ness and ity to form derived nouns accurately, and grasp their word formation rules and applicable contexts;
3. employ the target vocabulary in appropriate word forms to convey meaning in given contexts.
Focal and Difficult Points
Focal Points
1. Master the word formation rules of noun suffixes ance, -(t)ion, ness and ity, and skillfully convert verbs and adjectives into corresponding nouns.
2. Apply target vocabulary in proper forms to express ideas in different contexts.
Difficult Points
Select and use correct word forms of target vocabulary flexibly in specific contexts.
Procedures
Teaching Activities Learning Activities Purposes
STEP 1 Lead-in 1. Present the recruitment poster of the School Nature Observation Club and introduce the situational task: Our School Nature Observation Club is recruiting new members. To join us, you should show us your vocabulary skills in nature related tasks. Let’s start! Listen to the club recruitment scenario and take part in teacher student interaction. To create a real life situational context of club recruitment, stimulate students’ learning motivation and clarify the task driven learning purpose.
Raise guiding questions: What’s your habit when you observe nature How do you feel when you see a beautiful butterfly What about a dead bird 2. Assign the group task of sorting the Nature Observation Word Bank — find the odd one out. Divide students into small groups and hand out vocabulary cards from Activity 2a. 3. Invite group representatives to present outcomes, check and confirm answers together with the whole class. Write key distinctions on the blackboard and offer clarifying examples linked to nature observation. Respond to the guiding questions with descriptive words such as sad, angry, disappointed. Carry out group discussion based on vocabulary cards, figure out the odd word in each group, and explain word meanings as well as reasons for elimination. Group representatives present the group’s conclusions. (Example: habit refers to a behaviour, while other words describe personal qualities.) To activate students’ topic related prior vocabulary and lay preparation for the following vocabulary learning. To guide students to discriminate, analyse and categorize vocabulary through the “odd word out” activity.
STEP 2 Nature Vocabulary Handbook 1. Introduce the task of completing the Nature Vocabulary Handbook that requires noun forms. Guide students to finish Exercise 2b. 2. Invite students to share the derived nouns as well as their meanings, and encourage them to make sentences about nature observation. e.g. The action of protecting the frog is important. 3. Lead students to explore and summarize word formation rules: adj. n.[-ness] v. n.[-tion] Complete 2b by adding target suffixes; refer to dictionaries when necessary. Give examples such as: act action; good goodness. Share self formed nouns and their meanings, and jointly make sentences connected with nature observation. Participate in exploring and summarizing the suffix word formation rules. To check whether students can correctly form nouns by applying the target suffixes. To encourage students to explain derived nouns and put them into nature themed sentences for contextual application. To guide students to induce suffix word formation rules independently to achieve deeper understanding.
STEP 3 Writing Observation Diary 1. Complete 2c Ask students to complete Exercise 2c independently. 2. Group role play Invite some students to act out behaviours such as “store food”, “luggage weighs a ton”, and ask other group members to guess the corresponding English expressions. 3. Make an interview Guide students to finish the cloze of 2d in pairs; require students to create interviews about frogs as well as other plants and animals. 4. Write a report diary Choose a plant or animal and write an observation diary. Complete Exercise 2c independently with proper word forms. Take part in group role play. Some act out behaviours such as “store food”, “luggage weighs a ton”; others watch and guess the matching expressions. Finish the 2d cloze in pairs, then create interviews about frogs and other creatures. Select a plant or animal and write an observation diary independently. To check students’ mastery of word forms in sentence contexts. To motivate students and encourage spontaneous language use via role play. To consolidate vocabulary application and develop students’ dialogue creating skills. To practise integrated language output by writing observation diaries.
STEP 4 Homework Must-do Write your Weekend Nature Observation Diary, using at least five new nouns learned in this lesson. Choose-to-do Create an interview based on your nature observation. To consolidate target vocabulary through writing and extend language practice in real life scenarios.
