Unit 4 Amazing Plants and Animals
Section A 1a-1d
Overview
Centered on the theme “Humans and Nature” — “Natural Ecology”, this unit covers two key dimensions: 1) geographical locations of major countries worldwide, alongside ecological characteristics and natural landscapes across different regions; 2) love for and reverence toward nature, and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. As a vital component, it helps build students’ awareness of nature and ecological literacy. It aims to guide students to explore the extraordinary traits of various plants and animals, understand the profound bonds these organisms share with human life, and in turn cultivate respect for nature and a willingness to protect it.
In terms of content, the unit touches on a wide range of topics. It invites students to describe remarkable plants (moss, redwood, bamboo, ginkgo) and animals (blue whale, cheetah, bee, elephant bird), use superlative adjectives for comparison and description, discuss the close connections between flora fauna and human existence, and examine how significant plants and animals are to humanity.
In terms of content, the unit involves multiple aspects. It enables students to talk about amazing plants (like moss, redwood tree, bamboo, ginkgo tree) and animals (like blue whale, cheetah, bees, frogs), use superlative adjectives to compare and describe them, discuss the intimate connection between plants, animals and human lives, and explore the importance of plants and animals to humans.
From the perspective of textual features, the unit adopts diverse text types including dialogues, expository passages and practical tasks. These texts deliver information about plants and animals through authentic and vivid contexts, enabling students to grasp linguistic knowledge such as adjective superlative forms, while enhancing reading comprehension, critical thinking and communicative competence. By engaging with these texts, students can deepen their insight into the natural world, recognise the interdependence of all living beings, and develop a positive stance on ecological conservation.

Teaching aims
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. distinguish information about plants and animals, and discuss their features and significance with peers using target language expressions;
2. read popular science texts about nature to identify text structures, main ideas and supporting details;
3. gain knowledge of plant and animal features, habits and ecological roles to appreciate the value of ecological protection; flexibly rewrite popular science passages with the unit’s target language;
4. summarize letter combinations corresponding to phonemes such as /e / and /a / based on phonetic rules and spell relevant words accurately; recognize semantic stress and how sentence stress shapes different meanings;
5. grasp the formation rules and pragmatic functions of adjective and adverb superlatives, and apply them to describe unique features of plants and animals, including “world record” attributes;
6. categorize vocabulary by parts of speech, meanings and other dimensions; understand noun suffix word formation rules, use dictionaries to explore derivatives and enlarge vocabulary;
7. develop active interest in plants and animals in nature, recognize the importance of harmonious co existence between humans and nature, and build awareness of ecological conservation.
Content analysis
This section consists of the opening page and two conversational passages built around an animal and plant quiz. Emma and Yaming talk about four representative living things: the blue whale, the cheetah, moss and the redwood tree. Activities cover picture observation, listening tasks for sequencing and matching, as well as pair work oral practice. It integrates visuals, listening and speaking around amazing plants and animals.
Set in the theme “Human and Nature — Natural Ecology”, this section starts the whole unit. On the language side, students learn and use descriptive adjectives and superlatives in real conversation, and practise listening for key information as well as topic related oral interaction. In thematic terms, it sparks students’ interest in biodiversity, raises their awareness of nature conservation, and builds language and thematic preparation for later unit study.
Written as a light hearted quiz conversation, the text fits middle school students’ daily experience. Activities follow a step by step listening speaking path: 1a activates prior knowledge through pictures; 1b 1c focus on listening comprehension; 1d moves to oral output. It follows the input intake output learning process. Meanwhile, the text develops students’ thinking by comparing and classifying facts about living things, encouraging them to observe and explore nature both in and after class.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this section, students will be able to:
1. obtain and sort out key information about superlative plants and animals through multi-modal and listening materials, and summarize their unique features with superlative language;
2. accurately use the superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs to describe and compare special traits of different plants and animals;
3. master and apply target question-and-answer sentence patterns to conduct pair and group discussions about amazing creatures in nature;
4. actively explore more “world’s most” knowledge of plants and animals, broaden their understanding of biodiversity, and develop a lasting interest in natural science.
Focal and Difficult Points
Focal Points
1. Correctly identify and pronounce vocabulary about plants and animals.
2. Use descriptive adjectives to talk about features of plants and animals.
3. Grasp the meanings and usage of the superlative forms of adjectives.
4. Ask and answer special questions introduced by What to communicate about characteristics of plants and animals.
Difficult Points
1. Tell apart and properly apply different comparative degrees of adjectives when describing plants and animals.
2. Use superlative related sentence patterns flexibly in real life communication.
Procedures
Teaching Activities Learning Activities Purposes
STEP 1 Warm-up and lead-in T: Let’s set up a Plant and Animal Corner for our class. Task 1 Ask students to help pick some plants and animals to decorate the Plant and Animal Corner. Task 2 Show a photo of a vibrant plant and animal corner. Referring to the unit cover, guide students to share: What do you see in the photo What amazing plants or animals do you want in our corner Why Students work cooperatively in groups. Discuss in groups and choose suitable plants and animals for corner decoration. Observe the shown photo of the vibrant corner as well as the unit cover, then have a group discussion and make oral sharing. To activate students’ background knowledge about some amazing plants and animals.
STEP 2 Describing T: Now everyone can select one candidate in 1a and use descriptive adjectives to describe the animal or plant you have chosen. Invite students to share and discuss: Why does this adjective fit the creature Students refer to the adjective box (e.g., green, small, large…) to complete the task in 1a. They then make short descriptions (e.g., The large blue whale…) and share their ideas with the class. To let students focus on practical descriptive language (critical for corner labels later) and encourage them to link adjectives to real corner management.
STEP 3 Listening for details T: We are going to design labels for the animals and plants in the corner. Listen to the conversation and number the plants and animals in 1a according to the listening sequence. Match descriptive words with the plants and animals in 1a. Listen to the conversation, number the creatures in 1a and finish the matching task. To train students to catch key factual details from listening materials and encourage them to discover the world records of animals and plants.
STEP 4 Outputting T: Now work in pairs. Talk about what makes these plants and animals amazing, and finish writing the Corner Information. Carry out pair work. Ask and answer with target sentence patterns, for example: —What’s amazing about the blue whale —It’s the largest animal in the world. To consolidate superlative related expressions through pair work dialogue and prepare students for subsequent learning tasks.
STEP 5 Homework Must-do Create a short conversation to practise the language learned in class. Choose-to-do Design an introduction card for plants and animals in the Corner. To reinforce in class language knowledge, extend learning through differentiated tasks and support the building of the Plant and Animal Corner.
