Unit 4 Amazing Plants and Animals
Section A Grammar
Content analysis
The grammar focused learning material centres on the superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs. It includes three tasks: identifying the formation rules for superlatives (3a), completing sentences with appropriate superlative forms (3b), and filling in a short passage using superlative structures (3c).
Centered on comparing features of plants and animals as well as traditional cultural symbolism, the content features examples such as the blue whale, African elephant, cheetah, bamboo, giant panda, flowers, butterflies, elephant birds and ginkgo trees to help learners grasp superlative usage. It also involves the cultural symbolism of the ginkgo tree in Chinese culture.
Learning the superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs enables students to accurately express the concept of “most” in degree and scope, and enhances their ability to give precise descriptions of plants and animals. Centred on plants, animals and the traditional cultural symbolism of the ginkgo tree, the material inspires students’ curiosity about natural life and cultural heritage. It integrates language acquisition with nature and culture related cognition, serving both linguistic and educational purposes.
In terms of design, this grammar teaching material integrates observation, practice and contextual application. It follows a well structured progression: form perception (3a), sentence level practice (3b), and discourse level application (3c). This arrangement matches the grammar learning logic of moving from recognizing grammatical forms to progressive practical use.
For language presentation, it provides plenty of example sentences containing superlatives (e.g., “The blue whale is the largest and heaviest animal in the world.”) to illustrate grammatical rules. Key patterns such as “one of + the + superlative adjective + plural nouns” (e.g., “The ginkgo tree is one of the most ancient living trees on earth.”) are adopted to consolidate grammar points. Meanwhile, background knowledge about the ginkgo tree is embedded in the passage in 3c, combining grammar practice with pragmatic use and cultural learning.
