A Young Artist’s Great Painting

The World’s Smallest Artificial Heart
A 7-year-old Chinese boy, Junjun, who suffered from end-stage heart failure, has become the world’s youngest patient to receive the world’s smallest artificial heart. The device was developed by a company based in Shenzhen.
Heart disease patients in China face a serious problem: there is a huge shortage of donated hearts. Junjun was diagnosed with a serious heart disease in 2024 and suffered severe cardiogenic shock. Doctors could not find a matching donor heart in time, so they decided to use the artificial heart to keep him alive.
The artificial heart weighs only 45 grams and is 2.9 cm in diameter — 50% lighter than existing models. A team of doctors led by Dong Nianguo performed a five-hour implantation operation in Wuhan. The operation was a great success.
The device works like a pump. It helps the patient’s heart send blood to the whole body, so the patient can stay alive while waiting for a suitable donor heart. After the operation, Junjun recovered well. He can now eat by himself and even play simple games.
The research team says the artificial heart is not only for children. In the future, it may help thousands of adult patients with severe heart disease as well. However, there are still challenges. The device is expensive, and doctors need more experience to use it.
Chinese scientists have been working on artificial hearts for over twenty years. Thanks to their hard work and creativity, China has become one of the world’s leading countries in this field. The success of Junjun’s operation is a significant milestone in Chinese medical history.

The Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines
Huang Xuhua, known as the "Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines", passed away in Wuhan on February 6, 2025, at the age of 99. His death brought great sadness to the whole nation, but his story will always inspire Chinese people.
Huang was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw his country suffering from wars, so he decided to devote himself to protecting the motherland. He gave up the chance to become a doctor and chose to study shipbuilding at university.
In 1958, a top-secret project began — China started to develop its own nuclear submarines. Huang was chosen as one of the main designers. At that time, China had little experience, no technology from other countries, and even no complete drawings. But Huang and his team never gave up. They used abacuses and calculators to work out millions of numbers.
To keep the project secret, Huang "disappeared" from the public for about thirty years. He didn’t go home to visit his parents, and his own father passed away without knowing what his son was doing. When people asked about his job, he kept silent.
In 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was successfully launched. In 1988, at the age of 62, Huang did something even braver — he personally joined the submarine’s deep-dive test, becoming the first chief designer in the world to do so.
In 2019, Huang was awarded the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour. However, he always said he was just an ordinary worker doing his duty. "My whole life belongs to the country," he said.
Great people like Huang Xuhua remind us that real greatness comes from devotion, courage and responsibility.
