It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed (瘫痪的) patient was able to drink water on his own by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand. This was a success in brain-machine interface (BMI，脑机接口) technology made by a team of Chinese scientists and doctors.
BMI refers to creating a connection between the human brain and external devices (外部设备), making communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do simple things by themselves.
On Oct.24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient’s head. The chip can receive neural signals from the brain. After three months of home recovery training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water independently.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient’s brain. However, this project is minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient’s brain is not harmed. So it is an important breakthrough. It also uses a wireless power supply (无线电源), so the implanted (植入的) device doesn’t need a battery.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients’ independence and even who they are. Ethical concerns (伦理问题) related to BMI also need to be addressed. These include whether the patient has a clear understanding of what is going on when they agree to take part in the test.

A visit to Suzhou would not be complete without watching a performance of Pingtan. Pingtan is the art of storytelling and ballad singing (民谣演唱) in the Suzhou dialect (方言). It mixes Pinghua and Tanci to form a new art. Pinghua is just talking while Tanci is talking and singing.
Pinghua became popular during the Qing Dynasty. With a folding fan (扇子) and a gavel (木槌) in hand, a performer told stories of historical people and events. By the mid-16th century, Tanci, or “story-singing” appeared in areas around Suzhou. In the next century, storytellers began to mix the two art forms into a new one. This new style later became known as Suzhou Pingtan.
In 1938, people in Shanghai could listen to more than 100 different Pingtan programs on the radio. Pingtan is usually performed by two people—a man and a woman. The man often appears in long blue or grey clothes. The woman wears a more colorful qipao. All they need is a table and two chairs. One performer carries a three-stringed zither (三弦扁琴) and the other plays the pipa.
Traditional stories, love stories, classic novels and historical events are common themes in Pingtan programs. Most of the time, viewers are familiar with the stories. But different Pingtan programs have different styles of music and songs. They also have their own personal changes. The Suzhou dialect is widely regarded as one of the sweetest tones in China.

Experiencing Chinese Calligraphy
Last weekend, a friend and I went to visit an art museum. We found many works of traditional Chinese calligraphy on show. It was my first time to visit such an exhibition, and I was really excited. The next day, Wang looked at his calligraphy — the Lanting Xu (Introduction to the poems written at the Orchid Pavilion) — and realized that it was his best calligraphy ever. He then tried to recreate the exact style of calligraphy, but he found it impossible to do so. When he was at the party, he was very happy and relaxed. This made his calligraphy especially lively. People later said that the calligraphy in the Lanting Xu looked like a Chinese dragon at play.
It is a pity that the original version of the Lanting Xu has been lost, but it was copied and studied by many calligraphers.
