Yuan Longping is regarded as one of the most respected scientists in China. He was born in Beijing in 1930. When he was a teenager, he witnessed many people suffering from hunger. Some families could hardly get enough food to live on. This terrible experience deeply influenced him. He made a decision to devote himself to agricultural research. He hoped to develop new rice so that more people could have full meals.
After he finished college, he worked as a teacher in a farming school. He spent almost all his spare time in the fields. He did thousands of experiments day and night. For many years, he met lots of difficulties and failures. But he never gave up his dream. In 1973, he successfully developed hybrid rice. This great achievement greatly increased rice production in China and many other countries.

Marie Curie was a great Polish French scientist. Born in 1867, she grew up in a poor family. At that time, girls in Poland had few chances to receive higher education. However, she never stopped learning. She worked hard to save money and finally went to Paris for further study.
In Paris, she studied physics and chemistry. She met Pierre Curie, her husband, and they began to work together. They worked in a small and cold lab. They spent years doing countless experiments. After long time hard work, they discovered a new chemical element called radium.

On 9 January, 1896, Mao Yisheng was born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. He was a famous bridge expert,civil engineering scientist and educator of China.
Mao received a modern education including maths, science and arts. He graduated from Tangshan Engineering College in 1916. In 1917,he was accepted into America's Cornell University where he earned his Master's degree. Then he moved to Carnegie Mellon University where he became the first PhD student in the university's history. His dissertation(博士论文) contributed(贡献) greatly to bridge theory in the 1920s.
Dr. Mao was considered as the founder(奠基)of modern bridge engineering in China. He designed Qiantang River Bridge, the first road-and-railway bridge designed and built by a Chinese.
He also took part in the design of China's first modern bridge-Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.
Moreover, Dr. Mao also led the design of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. He became an academician(院士)of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955, and the first Chinese scientist to be awarded the title of a foreign academician of the United States National Academy of Engineering in 1982.
Dr. Mao worked in five famous universities.He greatly influenced Chinese engineering education by introducing new teaching methods.
Dr. Mao passed away in 1989. He was awarded the title of "the most beautiful fighter"in 2019. Mao Yisheng plays an important role in Chinese structural engineering.
