I think friends should be similar because similar friends can understand each other more easily.
For example, my friend Lucy and 1 are quite alike. We both love painting. Every weekend, we draw pictures in the park together. We share our painting skills and ideas. It makes us much happier.
Lucy and I are similar in other ways. Both of us are quiet and patient. When we meet difficult problems in our studies, we can solve them together. We never get angry easily. This similar personality helps us get along well. We both keep a diary every day. We write down our daily experiences and feelings and share them with each other. Lucy does better in math. When I have math problems, she always helps me. I learn a lot from her and make great progress.
My favorite saying is, "A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart." Similar friends can share common interests, and grow together. So, I think friends should be similar.
Friends should be alike/similar .

Friends should be different .
I think friends should be different. Different friends can help us grow.
For example, I am a quiet and shy boy, but my best friend, Jack, is very outgoing. He is always full of energy and can make everyone around him happy. Thanks to him, I am becoming more outgoing. Now I find that talking with others is really fun!
I have another friend, Lily. She is very brave and always says what she thinks, especially when she thinks I am making a mistake. I am not as direct as she is, but I am glad to have such an honest friend.
Jack likes to play football, while I prefer to play basketball. Lily enjoys reading books in her free time. Even though our habits are different, we respect each other's choices and sometimes even try to do what each other likes.
My favorite saying is, "Friends can bring out the best in me." Different friends can bring us different experiences and make our lives more colorful. So, in my opinion, friends should be different.
