Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach, but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in the sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation ever!”
Kirsty was working for a volunteer program in Tunisia in North Africa. Groups of twenty-five young volunteers work together on archaeological sites to find important information about the past. The volunteers have to be very careful, because it’s important not to damage the things they find. Many of them work at Tunisia’s biggest archaeological site in Carthage, but some of them work in other important sites in the country.
Kirsty explains why she chose this vacation. “I’ve always been interested in history, and Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. People were living in Carthage 3,000 years ago. I love being in places that are so old. It was exciting to find pots and other things people used every day.”
It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. “I come from Alaska which is a cold place,” she says. “It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun. On September 3,2025, Tian’anmen Square witnessed (见证) a big military parade (阅兵) to mark the 80th anniversary (周年) of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (抗日战争) and the World Anti-Fascist War (世界反法西斯战争). Thousands of people gathered early to watch this historic event. The event showed that we hope for peace and we are powerful enough to keep it for the world. It began with a serious ceremony. President Xi reviewed the troops and gave a speech. Behind him stood big buildings shaped like the Great Wall, with the numbers“1945” and“2025”, which stood for the long journey from victory to modern progress. More than 20 foreign leaders attended the event, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. That showed international support for China’s efforts to remember history and develop peace.

The war caused losses of nearly 600 billion yuan. Now, the parade let the world know about these losses and showed China’s current (当前的) role as a global peacekeeper.
The parade ended with a flight show of more than 100 planes. President Xi’s speech stressed again that China’s promise is to keep world peace and its goals for becoming modern. Dear Tom,
I heard that you are interested in Chinese archaeology. I’m happy to share with you the latest discovery at the Sanxingdui site.
Sanxingdui is an important archaeological site in Sichuan. It was a centre of the ancient Shu Kingdom over 3,000 years ago. In May 2026, archaeologists discovered an iron object made from meteorite there. The iron came from a meteorite falling to Earth thousands of years ago. It is the first discovery of this kind in the area. The finding proves ancient Shu people had great metalworking skills. It changes our knowledge of ancient Chinese civilization. I feel amazed that people could use space materials more than 3,000 years ago.
I hope you can visit China one day and see these amazing artifacts for yourself!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
