① The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted (烘烤) its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well. Soon there were more Starbucks stores in Seattle.
②Things did begin to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who owned Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he wanted to know more about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired (雇佣) Schultz as the company’s head of marketing.
③In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special atmosphere (气氛) of the coffee bars caught his eyes most. To Schultz, it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.
④ Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable, and relaxing, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores-and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day.

When Wang Hong accepted the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖) in Philadelphia in July 2026, many people in China felt proud. The prize is often described as one of the highest honors in mathematics. But for Wang, the road to that moment was not a straight line. It looked more like the famous “needle” (针) in the Kakeya conjecture (挂谷猜想): it kept turning, testing new directions before finding enough space.
Wang grew up in Pingle County, Guangxi. When she was four, her arm was badly hurt by boiling water. For years, her parents took her from hospital to hospital. Because her skin was sensitive (敏感的) to light, she spent much time indoors. This difficult experience did not close her world. Instead, it helped her learn how to be alone, how to read by herself and how to shut out noise. In primary school, she skipped (跳过) two grades.
Her father, a maths teacher, opened the door to numbers for her. Her mother, an English teacher, gave her an early interest in language. Wang later said that maths was one way for her to understand the world. As a child, she was excited when she solved a problem about seven points on a plane. Her parents did not push her along a fixed road. They gave her freedom, which became an important kind of support.
At middle school, Wang was not a simple “exam machine”. She loved asking questions and sometimes thought about easy problems in surprisingly complex ways. After entering Guilin Middle School at 13, she was younger and smaller than most classmates. Once, a classmate laughed at her for raising her hand too often. Her teacher Tang Nianhua comforted her and helped her learn both to speak bravely and to listen carefully. Wang joined a “Daily Problem” group, where her mathematical thinking grew sharper.
At Peking University, Wang did not first enter the maths school she wanted. Surrounded by classmates with years of competition training, she began to doubt herself. Still, she could not give up maths. She studied hard enough to transfer into (转入) the School of Mathematical Sciences. Later, in Paris and at MIT, she still wondered whether she was only good at exercises or truly able to do research. She even stopped maths for a while and explored art and architecture (建筑).
In the end, she returned. “In mathematics, I can freely build anything without asking anyone for permission,” she once said. Years of doubt, detours (弯路) and repeated trying did not pull her away from the problem. They helped her come back to it with a quieter and stronger mind. When fame finally arrived, Wang remained low-key (低调). Her advice to students was simple: if you gain something in the end, it does not matter whether you are faster or slower. Do not rush. Take your time.
38.Why does the writer compare Wang Hong’s life to the “needle” in the Kakeya conjecture
A.Because she never gave up even when she faced difficulties.
B.Because she was very thin and small when she was young.
C.Because she liked to solve hard problems.
D.Because she changed directions many times before finally finding her way.
39.What can we infer about the freedom Wang’s parents gave her
A.It helped her develop the habit of thinking about problems in surprising ways.
B.It showed that they trusted her to make decisions about her own studies.
C.It allowed her to develop her own interests without being pushed into a fixed path.
D.It allowed her to skip grades and enter different schools at a young age.
40.What do we know about Wang Hong’s middle school life
A.She was taught by her parents to think in unusual ways.
B.She showed a habit of thinking differently from others about simple questions.
C.She was often laughed at because she asked too many questions.
D.She was younger than her classmates, so she had to work much harder than them.
41.What is the main message of this passage
A.Hard work is the only thing that matters for success.
B.A successful person never changes their mind or direction.
C.People may have doubts, take different paths, and still achieve great things in the end.
D.Teachers and parents are the most important people in a student’s life.

Charles Darwin
Early Years
Charles Darwin was one of the six children from a big family. His grandfather and father were doctors and the young Darwin went to Edinburgh University to study medicine. However, he hated to see blood and he soon realized that he couldn’t be a doctor. He then went to Cambridge University and discovered that he had a great interest in studying plants, insects and animals. Luckily, one of Darwin’s university teachers helped him join the perfect trip for a biologist: a trip around the world to study nature. The Beagle
In 1831, Charles Darwin left Plymouth on The Beagle, a ship that took him around the world for five years. While he was travelling, he studied the plants and animals in the countries and on the islands that the ship visited. Darwin also spent his time on The Beagle writing notes about the things he had seen. When he finally arrived back in Britain, Darwin was already starting to create his famous theory. It explained that all living things had a common ancestor (祖先).
Down House
At home at Down House, a place that you can still visit today, Darwin wrote many articles and books about his travels, but he didn’t want to make anything about his theory known to the public. He worked in his study, where he wrote 250, 000 words about his theory of evolution (进化论), but he was frightened about what people might say about his idea that monkeys were the ancestors of humans. He thought the public would be against it and was so frightened that he became ill with worry. However, when another scientist started to write about similar ideas, Darwin decided to print his book, On the Origin of Species.
