Narrator: One night, an old man came to a village.
He saw the local people running away.

Villager 1: The monster Nian will come! Last year, it
ate many animals. We are all afraid of it.
Old man: Wait! I have a good idea. I can help you!
Villager 2: The monster is very strong. You should
run away to the mountains with us!
Old man: No. I will stay alone in the village and face
Nian.

Narrator: The old man stayed in the village. Then, at
midnight, the monster came.
Nian: What is that red paper on the doors and
windows I hate the colour red! Why are
the windows so bright I hate bright lights!
Old man: Aha! He looks worried.

sea. The next day, the villagers came back

and windows and I also lit many candles.
Finally, I set off fireworks. He ran away!
Villagers: Hooray! We are safe!
