Among etymologists (词源学家), Allen Walker Read was known as the man who discovered the origin of the
term “OK”.
His quest began in 1941. He found that “OK” stood for “Old Kinderhook”, a reference to President Martin Van
Buren, a native of Kinderhook, N.Y., who ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1840. Read discovered that Democrats
who supported Van Buren called themselves the “Democratic O. K. Club”. Later, a writer supporting Van Buren asked,
“Will you not say O. K. Go ahead!” This, Read wrote in 1941, was the origin of the word that later became common
in almost every language and throughout the world.
Years later, Read found an even earlier source — a Boston newspaper in 1838 that playfully used initials for
such phrases as G. T. D.H. D.(give the devil his due) and O. K. K. B.W. P. (one kind kiss before we part). In this
vernacular (通俗用语), O. K. stood for “all correct”, spelled just for fun as “oll korrect”. “Old Kinderhook” and “oll
korrect” have long been the first accepted sources for the word.
Read taught English at Columbia University for 29 years and was a consultant on many dictionaries. However,
he did not believe that dictionaries should be the final authorities of the correct usage of words and phrases. “The great
danger in the use of dictionaries is that they may come to be thought of as strict limits that prevent the free enjoyment
of the mother tongue,” he wrote. “Standards are a personal matter. Anyone who tries to defend ‘the treasure of our
tongue’ should recognize that a valuable part of the treasure is the informal element, localisms, and slang.”
Extending this theory, Read believed that everything changed all the time. He developed a strong aversion to
what he called “absolutisms”, such as “perfect”, “correct”, “pure”, or “total”. For instance, Read noted that the Rockies
were once called the Northern Andes, and that other names like Stony, Shining, and Enchanted were all perfectly good
names. Take the word “liberal” as another example. Read said that President Reagan turned this very good word into
something “dreadful”.
Throughout his life, Read devoted himself to a kind of linguistic detective work on the origins of American
speech. He was widely respected and dealt with all manner of questions about words in an engaging scholarly spirit.
24.What did Read’s research reveal about “OK”
A.It came from a Native American language. B.It was created for a political campaign.
C.It had two independent historical origins. D.It developed from an accidental misspelling.
25.What did Read think of dictionaries
A.They should be revised frequently.
B.They are important in language learning.
C.They are the best guide for word usage.
D.They might restrict the natural use of languages.
26.What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Favor. B.Doubt. C.Pride. D.Dislike.
27.Why does the author write the text
A.To explain the history of “OK”. B.To introduce the man behind “OK”.
C.To show etymological research methods. D.To present a language learning experience.

A few years ago, we celebrated Frankenstein’s 200th birthday. This famous book, written by British novelist
Mary Shelley, is rightly known as the first work of science fiction. Frankenstein is the name of a doctor who creates a
creature from human body parts. The doctor’s ambitions for his work are noble, but his experiment has disastrous
results.
Shelley was writing in an age when science was beginning to have a great impact on the world. People had
different attitudes toward science back then. Some found it inspiring — they thought of the progress medicine was
making in curing common illnesses. But others found it a little frightening — it was changing the world, making it a lot
less familiar.
Science plays a bigger part in our lives than it did two centuries ago. Today, science has brought us not only
great things like the Internet, but also nuclear weapons, which, if used in large numbers, could kill off our species.
Science still therefore creates the mixed feelings it did in Shelley’s day. It’s because Shelley saw both the promise and
the danger of science that she’s still an influence today.
In fact, the subtitle of the book, The Modern Prometheus (普罗米修斯), shows how important myth (神话) was
to the writer. Prometheus, a figure from classical Greek mythology, written by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles,
steals fire from the gods and gives it to people, an act for which he is terribly punished. Shelley’s husband, the famous
poet Percy Shelley, wrote about him in Prometheus Unbound. In the poem, he is a revolutionary hero, who triumphs
over the gods. In Mary Shelley’s book, however, her modern Prometheus, Dr. Frankenstein, is a highly controversial
figure, who sacrifices his home and life for his crazy addiction to his creation.
In short, Mary Shelley’s book is not just a scary and moving story, but a philosophical tale that, even after 200
years, still speaks to modern readers.
28.What can we know about Dr. Frankenstein and the creature he made
A.He created it with animal parts. B.He managed to kill it in the end.
C.He created it with good intentions. D.He was aware of its dangers before its creation.
29.Why do today’s readers still relate to Mary Shelley
A.Her work discusses what it means to be human.
B.Her work warns people of the two sides of science.
C.Her work explains that any life deserves our respect.
D.Her work proves the important role of science in life.
30.How does Dr. Frankenstein differ from Prometheus in Greek mythology
A.Dr. Frankenstein is a revolutionary hero.
B.Dr. Frankenstein has inspired many poets.
C.Dr. Frankenstein causes some disagreement.
D.Dr. Frankenstein suffers little for what he does.
31.What is the passage
A.A book review. B.A news report. C.A short story. D.A biography.
D
We expect our doctors to be demi gods — faultless, tireless, always right. But they are only human. Increasingly,
they are stretched thin, working long hours, under enormous pressure, and often with limited resources. Of course,
better conditions would help, including more staff and improved systems. But even in the best funded clinics with the
most committed professionals, standards can still fall short. Despite years of training, human brains are not optimally
equipped for the pace, pressure, and complexity of modern healthcare.
Given that patient care is medicine’s core purpose, the question is who, or what, is best placed to deliver it AI
may still raise doubts, but research increasingly shows how it could help fix some of the most persistent problems and
overlooked failures — from misdiagnosis and error to unequal access to care.
Modern medicine prides itself on being scientific, yet doctors don’t always practise what the evidence
recommends. Studies show that evidence-based treatments are offered only about half the time to adults in the US.
Doctors can also disagree about diagnoses. In a study of more than 12,000 radiology images, reviewers offering second
opinions disagreed with the original assessment in about one in three cases. As alarming as this is, there are
understandable reasons for these failures — and viewed from another angle, it’s remarkable that doctors get it right as
often as they do.
Medical knowledge also moves faster than doctors can keep up. By graduation, half of what medical students
learn is already outdated. It takes an average of 17 years for research to reach clinical practice, and with a new
biomedical article published every 39 seconds, even skimming the abstracts would take about 22 hours a day. There are
more than 7,000 rare diseases, with 250 more identified each year.
In contrast, AI processes vast amounts of medical data at lightning speed, 24/7. Where doctors vary in unwanted
ways, AI is consistent. AI’s superpower is spotting patterns humans miss, and these tools are surprisingly good at
recognising rare diseases. Patients are increasingly recognising these benefits. Then there’s the problem of access.
Those most in need — the sickest, poorest and most marginalised in society — are the ones most likely to be left
behind. American Time Use Survey data shows patients sacrifice two hours for a 20-minute doctor’s visit.
This will only work for those who can use it, of course. Internet access is improving globally, but there are still
serious gaps: 2.5 billion people remain offline.
32.Why does the author begin by describing doctors as “demi gods”
A.To stress the unrealistic expectations people have of doctors.
B.To show that doctors are usually trained to be perfect.
C.To criticize medical schools for poor training.
D.To highlight doctors’ higher social status.
33.What problem does the author highlight with current medical practice
A.Most doctors do not believe in scientific methods.
B.Doctors usually misinterpret biomedical research articles.
C.Doctors often fail to apply evidence-based treatments consistently.
D.Medical students are unwilling to learn updated medical knowledge.
34.What can be inferred about AI’s role in healthcare
A.AI is especially useful for detecting common diseases.
B.AI could completely replace doctors in medical services.
C.AI has already solved the problem of global internet access.
D.AI may reduce inconsistency in diagnosis and improve access.
35.What is the author most likely to discuss in the following paragraph
A.The history of artificial intelligence in medicine.
B.More examples of patients rejecting AI technology.
C.Evidence that AI is less accurate than human doctors.
D.Solutions to the digital divide that limits AI healthcare.
Why Asking for Help Isn’t as Hard as You Think
Asking for help can feel surprisingly difficult. Many people worry that doing so will make them appear weak,
incompetent, or burdensome. Some fear rejection or the embarrassment of being denied, while others worry about
inconveniencing others. 36
The truth is, most people misunderstand what asking for help truly involves. When we are in need, we focus on
our own worries and fail to notice how willing others really are to assist us. 37 In fact, humans are deeply
prosocial: helping others comes naturally and often makes people feel happier. Even seeking advice can enhance how
competent the help-seeker appears.
Asking for help is important because most support only happens after a request is made. People want to help, but
they cannot respond if they do not know someone is struggling or what kind of help is actually needed. 38 It
also fosters kindness, strengthens social connections, and builds emotional closeness.
Many factors can influence how difficult it may feel to ask for help. In everyday situations, showing up and
asking is often enough. In some more complex cases, requests are most effective when they are Specific, Meaningful,
Action-oriented, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART), which clarifies needs and encourages helpers. 39
Mental health challenges can make it hard to articulate needs, and it is perfectly fine to seek guidance from
professionals — they are there to support you.
40 Despite the fact that many societies emphasize independence, encouraging interdependence —
through collective care and safe spaces for sharing struggles — can make it easier to reach out. By understanding both
cultural and psychological context, we can turn asking for help into an opportunity for meaningful connection that
benefits both the seeker and the helper. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is an invitation to build trust and
strengthen relationships.
A.Of course, not all requests have to be that specific.
B.Cultural norms also shape how comfortable we feel asking for help.
C.Thus, SMART requests for help may feel easier to express than others.
D.Making a clear request removes uncertainty and encourages others to act.
E.These concerns, though common, often prevent people from seeking timely support.
F.Cultural values sometimes create barriers that discourage people from seeking support.
G.Research shows help-seekers consistently underestimate how much others want to help.
It isn’t surprising that most people associate fires with death and destruction. But for Jeremy Bailey, a fire
manager at the Nature Conservancy, fire is a natural process that 41 the landscape, much like rain. “When I
think about fire, it always brings me a pleasant feeling,” he says.
He is the first 42 on Life with Fire, a podcast hosted by former wildland firefighter Monthei. After an
introductory show, each 43 features an interview with an expert that sets out to show that shocking news
accounts of wildfires don’t tell the whole story.
“Wildfire is a subtle subject that shouldn’t be 44 to the same talking points every summer and then
forgotten about every winter,” says Monthei.
The effect of climate change on wildfires is a big talking point on the show because it creates more 45
conditions for fire and lengthens fire seasons. However, a few guests suggest that climate change isn’t the only
46 .
In an absorbing discussion about the historic firestorm that hit northern California in September, Nick at the
National Interagency Fire Center talks about the factors that had to 47 for such unheard-of fires to occur.
48 the absence of summer monsoons (季风) and presence of persistent heatwaves, it still took lightning and strong
winds to generate those vast flames.
Another big issue the show tackles is the fact that we can’t put out all wildfires, so we will have to manage them.
Bailey is a fan of 49 fires. These “prescribed fires” are often started to clear the low vegetation, such as bushes
and dead plants, that typically 50 severe wildfires. Planned blazes are mainly used to reduce the risks of
disastrous fires, but he thinks they have wider potential.
The podcast also discusses how to encourage women and ethnic minority groups into fire-related jobs, and how
to retain them, as these jobs are still 51 done by white men. Lenya, who started a training scheme for women
in fire, thinks people with 52 backgrounds are needed to help tackle the growing severity of wildfires. “ 53
at its core requires diversity because you have to have people thinking about issues in different ways and bringing
different types of solution to the table,” she says.
One 54 of Life with Fire is that although later shows are accessible to a general audience, the podcast
takes time to get into its stride (进展 ). Presenting the topics it covers in a different order would have helped guide
people with no knowledge of fire science.
Upcoming shows will be more 55 as Monthei talks to fire practitioners from around the world. “I think
telling stories and sharing new perspectives worldwide is a critical first step,” she says.

Christy Logue, a 17-year-old student in Clarion District, has shown great concern for animals since early
childhood. He has long devoted himself to caring for homeless cats in his community, regularly feeding them and
setting up temporary shelters to protect them from rainy weather. As years went by, however, the number of homeless
cats wandering the streets of Clarion District multiplied rapidly due to the uncontrolled reproduction. That gradually
became a public problem, splitting the community residents into opposing sides and causing frequent arguments.
A large portion of residents expressed strong dissatisfaction with the booming homeless cat population and felt
annoyed. People living near roads said those cats often cried and fought in the evening, which would keep them awake
and mess up their normal lives. They believed the only way to prevent problems later was to drive all cats away.
On the contrary, many warm-hearted residents, including Christy Logue, showed great sympathy for these
helpless creatures. They often fed the cats, feeling sad when seeing these thin, dirty cats eat nervously. In their opinion,
such cats are not dangerous creatures but helpless homeless animals. Driving them away cruelly is wrong, and leaving
them to die without care is inhumane (无情的). They thought the community should not treat these innocent creatures
coldly.
Unwilling to limit his efforts to simple feeding alone, Christy chose to take further action. After careful
consideration and thorough observation, he worked out a comprehensive and practical plan for standardized homeless
cat management. First, he recorded the total number of homeless cats in the neighbourhood, took photos of their living
conditions and collected genuine opinions from animal lovers and annoyed residents alike. Then he wrote a proposal
and submitted it to the community committee, putting forward practical ideas: building outdoor cat shelters in quiet
corners far from residential buildings, carrying out regular physical examinations for homeless cats to control their
population and reduce the spread of germs (细菌), and calling for volunteer feeders to take care of the cats in shifts.

M: Yes, it has always been burning me out.
W: Have you got any new offer
M: No, I just want to become a slashy, which means doing different kinds of jobs based on my own schedule

M: Brilliant. Your idea reminds me of the stone sculpture in front of our teaching building, so maybe I can work
on it.
W: Good choice. And don’t forget to write a journal explaining your idea.

about vertical farms. First, Dr. Smith, what exactly is a vertical farm
M: It’s a new way of growing food indoors on tall shelves, one above another.
W: I see. But why do we need to move farms indoors
M: The biggest advantage is higher land use efficiency. Besides, they allow year round crop production and
consume far less water.
W: Impressive. What kind of crops are usually grown there
M: Successful vertical farming crops usually grow quickly and stay small in size like strawberries. However,
wheat, corn and rice are not fit for them.
W: How about the future of vertical farms

M: Welcome to Henley-on-Thames, everyone. Please gather around. We are just minutes away from
watching the Henley Royal Regatta in which you will experience a combination of sports and typical British
culture.
Launched in June 1839, it has developed from a local fair into a global boat race. Tickets to this grand July event
usually go on sale in April.
As we walk towards the river, you might notice something unusual. Since a strict traditional dress code applies,
you’ll see gentlemen wearing suits and ties, and women in elegant dresses and hats with feathers.
Look at the white tent over there. That’s the VIP section to preserve the historic atmosphere. Making phone calls
is strictly banned inside, but don’t worry, our group is heading to the standard viewing area. You can freely use
your phones there, though bringing outside food and pets is not allowed.
Now get your cameras ready and follow me to enjoy the race.

Whether you’re longing for well-being, meditation or a new outlook on life,
these are the best British holiday retreats for immersing yourself and refreshing your soul.( 无论你是渴望幸福、

He found that “OK” stood for “Old Kinderhook”, a reference to
President Martin Van Buren, a native of Kinderhook, N.Y., who ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1840.(他发现
“OK”是“Old Kinderhook”的缩写,指的是纽约州金德胡克的居民、1840 年未能成功连任总统的 Martin Van

used initials for such phrases as G. T. D. H. D. (give the devil his due) and O. K. K. B. W. P. (one kind kiss before
根据第四段中 Read 所说的话“The great danger in the use of dictionaries is that they may come
to be thought of as strict limits that prevent the free enjoyment of the mother tongue
For instance, Read noted that the Rockies were once called the Northern
Andes, and that other names like Stony, Shining, and Enchanted were all perfectly good names. Take the word
“liberal” as another example. Read said that President Reagan turned this very good word into something
“dreadful”.

通读全文,尤其是第一段“Among etymologists (词源学家), Allen Walker Read was known as
the man who discovered the origin of the term “OK”.
Throughout his life, Read devoted himself to a kind of linguistic detective work on the
origins of American speech. He was widely respected and dealt with all manner of questions about words in an
engaging scholarly spirit.

The doctor’s ambitions for his work are noble, but his experiment has
disastrous results.(这位医生对他的研究抱有崇高的抱负,但他的实验带来了灾难性的后果。)”可知,
Frankenstein
It’s because Shelley saw both the promise and the danger of science that she’s still
an influence today.(正是因为 Shelley 看到了科学的前景与危险两面,时至今日她依旧具备影响力。)”
In the poem, he is a revolutionary hero, who triumphs over the gods. In Mary
Shelley’s book, however, her modern Prometheus, Dr. Frankenstein, is a highly controversial figure, who
sacrifices his home and life for his crazy addiction to his creation.(在诗歌里普罗米修斯是战胜众神的革命英雄。
In short, Mary Shelley’s book is not just a scary and moving story, but a
philosophical tale that, even after 200 years, still speaks to modern readers.(总而言之,Mary Shelley 的这本书不

We expect our doctors to be demi gods — faultless, tireless, always right.
But they are only human.
故选 A。
Modern medicine prides itself on being scientific, yet doctors don’t always practise
what the evidence recommends. Studies show that evidence-based treatments are offered only about half the time
to adults in the US.
Where doctors vary in unwanted ways, AI is consistent. AI’s superpower is
spotting patterns humans miss, and these tools are surprisingly good at recognising rare diseases. Patients are
increasingly recognising these benefits. Then there’s the problem of access. Those most in need — the sickest,
poorest and most marginalised in society — are the ones most likely to be left behind. American Time Use Survey
data shows patients sacrifice two hours for a 20-minute doctor’s visit.

This will only work for those who can use it, of course. Internet access is
improving globally, but there are still serious gaps: 2.5 billion people remain offline.

them appear weak, incompetent, or burdensome. Some fear rejection or the embarrassment of being denied, while
The truth is, most people misunderstand what asking for help truly involves. When we are in need,
we focus on our own worries and fail to notice how willing others really are to assist us.(事实是,大多数人并不
In fact, humans are deeply prosocial: helping others comes naturally and often makes people
feel happier. Even seeking advice can enhance how competent the help-seeker appears.(事实上,人类具有很强的
Asking for help is important because most support only happens after a request is made. People
want to help, but they cannot respond if they do not know someone is struggling or what kind of help is actually
Many factors can influence how difficult it may feel to ask for help. In everyday situations,
showing up and asking is often enough. In some more complex cases, requests are most effective when they are
Specific, Meaningful, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART), which clarifies needs and
Despite the fact that many societies emphasize independence, encouraging interdependence —
through collective care and safe spaces for sharing struggles — can make it easier to reach out. By understanding
both cultural and psychological context, we can turn asking for help into an opportunity for meaningful
connection that benefits both the seeker and the helper. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is an

However, some committee members hesitated. They worried that shelters would attract more cats and bring
trouble. Faced with these doubts and opposition, Christy did not give up. Instead, he communicated with the
committee members patiently. He stressed that it was the cats’ random reproduction and unmanaged living state
that led to all the trouble. Besides, he made a detailed commitment that trained volunteers would take charge of
daily cleaning and standardized feeding, completely avoiding health problems. Moved by his thorough plan and
persistence, the committee finally approved his proposal. Work on the cat shelters got underway soon afterwards.
