When you begin learning English, you probably just want to be able to order a cup of coffee and find the bathroom. But at some point, you’ll probably want to sound like a native (母语的) speaker. 1 Here is something you can follow.
First of all, make sure you know your grammar. “Bad grammar will hold you back,” Emile Dodds, from the Leonardo English website says. Here he tells of the importance of knowing the rules of a language. 2 In fact, sometimes you should do the opposite thing! A more natural and down-to-earth way can be more useful.
Next, when native speakers talk naturally, they often use contractions. Contractions are shortened forms of words, such as “can’t” for “cannot” and “won’t” for “will not”. 3 Although these contractions are not often used in writing, they sound very natural in spoken English.
Then, filler words are necessary too. Filler words are another important part of natural speech. They are words like “um”, “uh” and “well”. 4 For example, when you want to invite someone, you might say, “So, I was thinking, um, are you doing anything later ”
5 You can learn by listening to native speakers on the Internet or in movies to hear how they speak. This way, you can pick up useful words and sentences to improve your speaking skills. Keep practicing, and soon you will sound more like a native speaker!
A.They help you to express yourself more clearly.
B.Learning to speak naturally takes time and practice.
C.So how can you make your speech sound more natural
D.However, that doesn’t mean you have to speak like the King of England.
E.Native speakers also shorten “going to” to “gonna” or “got to” to “gotta”.
F.They not only sound natural, but also give you time to think about what you’ll say next.

Everyone is born with the 1 to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
2 an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are 3 in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect 4 they need to learn with something interesting. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from 5
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “Use it or lose it.” Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He 6 by trying many times and learning from 7 mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. Good learners know the best way they can study. 8 example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. They also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from 9 .
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn 10 and learn well.
八、阅读理解
Some students often complain (抱怨) about learning English. The subject, they say, takes up too much of their time. They have to read many passages, look up new words in the dictionary and do lots of exercises. Although they work hard, they still can’t get good scores in tests. “Why ” they ask. “How can I enjoy success ”
The story of Chinese astronaut (宇航员) Deng Qingming might help to answer their questions. Deng was chosen as an astronaut trainee (接受培训者) in 1998. Since that day, he has spent almost all of his time training hard to become an astronaut. Over the years, Deng has always seen trainees go into space one after another. However, he was still a backup (后备人员). He often felt sad. Sometimes, he even cried. But Deng never gave up. Although he is now in his fifties, he keeps training hard. “I must be ready whenever the chance comes to me,” he once said. Finally, on the night of November 29, 2022, he and two other astronauts boarded the Shenzhou-15 spaceship and flew into space. Deng had waited about 25 years for this very moment.
So, if you want to give up learning English (or something else), think about Deng’s story. Your efforts might not pay off immediately (立即,马上). Be patient. Try to improve your methods and keep going. One day, success will knock at your door. Being different from Deng, you probably won’t even have to wait about 25 years for that moment!

Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends in English.

【详解】1.“Lots of students want to know how to make progress in their English.”的意思是“许多学生想知道如何提高他们的英语水平”,与短文中“Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English.”意思相近,该句意思是“许多学生寻求关于如何提高他们英语的建议”。故填Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English.
2.Watching films and listening to songs意思是“看电影和听歌曲”;are意思是“是”;great ways to learn English意思是“学习英语的好方法”。故填:看电影和听歌曲是学习英语的好方法。
3.根据“And before you begin, you should smile at her!”可知,在和陌生人开始交谈之前,你应该对她微笑。故填You should smile at her.
4.根据“Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, ‘I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them ’”可知,张磊写下了新单词,但很快就忘了,他问如何能记住它们,由此可知“them”指代的是“new words”。故填New words.
5.forget new words“忘记新单词”;is very normal“是很正常的”,句子陈述客观事实,时态用一般现在时,it作形式主语,动词不定式作真正主语,所以be动词用is。故填It’s very normal to forget new words!

An example
Binbin gives us some ideas for learning English.
First of all, he thinks we need to become an active learner. To make himself speak English well, he practises English all the time. However, it doesn’t mean we have to study all the time. Instead, we should spend time using the language. For example, he speaks English with friends, repeats the dialogues from the films he likes, reads English books and sometimes writes his diary in English. Besides, he really enjoys learning. What’s more, he started out at zero and came across problems, so he suggests that we take things step by step, start simple and build up little by little.

What can you do to learn math actively in class and after class
How to study history and geography in an active way instead of only memorizing
What active learning skills can you use for physics chemistry experiments
What’s your most useful active learning habit for all subjects
Task:
Choose one subject (e.g., maths, history, physics, Chinese).
Each member shares one way to learn it actively.
Use the five tips and the sentence frames.
Choose one way to share with the class.
Example:
I think learning actively in physics means connecting it with real life. For example, when I learn about sound, I can observe how noise travels around me. That’s why physics becomes more interesting.
Group Discussion
Presentation
Draw mind maps to sort out time lines and geographical locations.
Link textbook knowledge with real news or documentary videos.
Ask “why” and “how” to understand, not just memorize facts.
Example:
Math 数学
Try solving exercises independently before asking for help.
Take notes of wrong questions and review them regularly.
Raise questions about difficult logic points in class.
Physics & Chemistry 理化
Join group experiments and operate tools by yourself.
Think about experiment principles and discuss results with partners.
