Xianghai National Nature Reserve (向海国家自然保护区) is home to birds. It is in Jilin Province, northeastern China. In 1986, it became a national nature reserve.
The Nature Reserve is more than 1,000 square kilometers in size. Much of its area is covered with wetlands, water, forests and plants. The special natural environment makes the Nature Reserve a wonderful place for birds.
Take white cranes (白鹤) as an example. They are a first-class nationally protected animals in China. In spring, white cranes move back to the Nature Reserve from the wintering area — Jiangxi’s Poyang Lake. In summer, baby cranes are born and grow up.
White cranes are popular with bird lovers. “In the past, we had to stay hundreds of meters away to get pictures of white cranes because they are cautious. They would be afraid and fly away if we got closer,” a bird lover told the news reporter. “In 2025, the Nature Reserve welcomed a large number of white cranes. They searched for food, even with bird lovers just 20 meters away,” he added.
This change is the result of China’s long efforts to protect birds. In 1983, the Nature Reserve made a survey of the whole area and more than 210 kinds of animals were found. In 2021, the Nature Reserve finished building a smart platform (平台). Since then, new technologies have been used to keep an eye on bird activity, weather conditions and so on. Thanks to these efforts, the local environment has truly improved and these birds are showing their trust with their wings.

A Volunteer’s Story
My name is Chen Wei. I have been a volunteer for an environmental protection organization for three years. During this time, I have participated in many activities aimed at protecting the environment. Today, I want to share one of my most memorable experiences with you.
Last summer, our team organized a river clean-up activity in my hometown. The river used to be clean and clear when I was a child. However, in recent years, it has become heavily polluted. People had been throwing garbage and pouring wastewater into it for a long time. The water turned dark and smelly, and the fish disappeared. The local community was worried about the situation and wanted to do something to help.
On the day of the activity, more than fifty volunteers came together. We spent the whole morning cleaning up the riverbanks. We collected plastic bottles, bags, and all kinds of trash. Some volunteers even used nets to remove floating garbage from the water. By the end of the day, we had collected dozens of bags of waste. It was hard work, but we all felt very proud.
Since that day, the community has taken better care of the river. People have stopped throwing garbage into it. Now, the water is much cleaner and you can see fish swimming in it again. This experience taught me that small actions can make a big difference. I believe that if everyone does their part, we can protect our environment and create a better world for future generations.

A.It has become more polluted. B.People have stopped throwing garbage into it.
C.The fish have all died. D.The water has turned dark again.

A.Cleaning rivers is a waste of time. B.Small actions can make a big difference.
C.Only volunteers can protect the environment. D.The river will never be clean again.

My Summer Experience at a Greening Project
Last summer, I volunteered at a desert greening project in Inner Mongolia. I had heard about desertification in school, but I never really understood it until I saw it with my own eyes. The dry land stretched as far as I could see. It was both shocking and inspiring.
Our team worked together to plant trees and build irrigation systems. Every morning, we carried young trees and tools into the sandy fields. It was hard work, but we were all motivated by the goal of making the land green again. I also learned a lot about the local plants and how they survive in such harsh conditions. One of the local experts taught us about the “Green Wall” project, which aims to stop the desert from spreading.
At the end of the two weeks, I looked back at the area where we had worked. The small trees we planted were already starting to make a difference. It was a small step, but I felt proud to be part of such an important project.
This experience changed my view on environmental protection. I realized that even small actions can help. I am now more committed to living a green life and encouraging others to do the same.

Plan a Green Campaign That Works
A green campaign should lead to a real change, not only a colorful poster. Many campaigns begin with great excitement but disappear when the special week ends. Careful planning can turn attention into a habit that lasts. 66
Choose one clear problem that your group can influence. “Protect the Earth” is too broad, while “reduce untouched lunch waste” can be measured. 67 For example, weigh untouched food for five ordinary school days and ask students why they left it. These facts will help you set a realistic goal instead of choosing an attractive number without evidence.
Design an action that is easy to follow. If students need five minutes to understand a recycling rule, many will give up. 68 A clearly labeled bin placed where waste is produced is more useful than a long rule on a distant wall. Test the action with a small group before using it across school; their mistakes may reveal a problem the planning team did not notice.
Share progress during the campaign. A weekly number, a short story or a photo can show whether the work matters. Do not report only the best day, because an unusual event may give a false picture. 69 Honest information builds trust and helps the group improve. It also allows other classes to learn from a plan without copying its weak points.
At the end, compare the result with your starting point. Decide what should continue, change or stop. Thank volunteers, but do not treat the closing meeting as the finish line. 70 A successful campaign leaves behind a habit, a useful system or better knowledge. If nothing remains after the posters come down, the group has created an event rather than a solution.
A.Before deciding how much to reduce, collect simple evidence about the present situation.
B.Choose a person or system that will support the useful action after the campaign.
C.Clear signs and convenient tools should make the better choice easy at the moment it is needed.
D.Begin by turning the big environmental idea into one specific task.
E.If the result is smaller than expected, report it and explain what the group will adjust.

People in Sweden no longer need to pay for plastic bags when they go shopping.

The government said that the use of plastic bags 81 (drop) greatly since the tax was introduced in 2020, and it believes the tax is no 82 (long) necessary. 83 , some worry that the use of plastic bags might go up again now that they are free, which could lead to more trash and environmental 84 (problem).
In 2019, before shoppers had to pay 85 their bags, people in Sweden used 74 plastic bags per person every year. In 2023, they used 17 per person every year, which is much lower than the 86 (Europe) Union (欧盟) goal of 40 per person every year.
But many people, including Sweden’s Environmental Protection Agency, think the tax should have been kept for longer. It is 87 (real) hoped that people will keep 88 (use) their own bags when shopping to help the environment. The agency said: “We don’t know what will happen now.” It added that it hoped stores and markets would still encourage people to bring 89 (they) own bags.
The government said earlier that the tax had “certain bad effects (影响)”, such as 90 increase in the use of paper bags, and an increased need to buy more plastic bags for trash cans at home.

Low-carbon Life, Green Future
Boys and girls, it’s a great honor for me to give a speech about “low-carbon life, green future”. Now we are facing big challenges because we are short of energy and our environment is getting worse.
To protect our earth, what should we do First, we should remember to turn off the lights when leaving the room. Second, it’s a good idea to walk or ride a bike instead of taking cars. Third, we’d better save water and use fewer plastic bags.
All in all, let’s start with small actions. I believe if everyone plays a part, we will have a greener and brighter future. Thank you!
