At the age of 72, Mr. Ortega was supposed to enjoy a quiet retirement. Instead, he found himself standing in front of thirty noisy high school students, holding a piece of wood and a chisel (凿子).
It all began when a local school asked for volunteers to teach after-school courses. Most people offered to teach English or maths. Mr. Ortega, who had worked as a carpenter (木匠) for fifty years, offered something else: woodworking.
At first, the students laughed at the idea. Woodworking seemed old-fashioned in a world of smartphones and video games. But Mr. Ortega did not try to convince them with words. He simply picked up a plain piece of wood and, within ten minutes, turned it into a small wooden bird that seemed ready to fly. The classroom fell silent.
Over the following months, the students learned to measure, cut, and polish. They made boxes, bookends, and even a small chair for the school library. More importantly, they learned patience. “You cannot rush the wood,” Mr. Ortega often said. “You can only listen to it, and it will tell you where to cut.”
One day, a shy girl named Rosa stayed after class. She showed Mr. Ortega a small wooden heart, carefully polished, with her mother’s name carved on it. “I made this for her birthday,” she said. “She always thought I was too impatient to finish anything.” Mr. Ortega smiled. “Then you have already learned the most important lesson the wood can teach.”
24. Why did Mr. Ortega start teaching woodworking
A. He needed extra money. B. A school asked for volunteers.
C. He wanted to sell his works. D. His grandson suggested it to him.
25. What made the students stop laughing at the class
A. Mr. Ortega’s wonderful woodwork. B. The beautiful wooden bird they made.
C. The teacher’s serious expression. D. The school’s strict rules.
26. What is the most important lesson the students learned
A. Woodworking is easy to learn. B. Patience helps people finish things.
C. Old skills are more useful than new ones. D. Working with hands is better than studying.
27. What can we infer about Rosa from the last paragraph
A. She would give up the course soon. B. She had made something for her mother.
C. She used to finish everything quickly. D. She was proud of her mother’s job.

Every spring and autumn, millions of birds fly along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, one of the busiest bird migration routes on Earth. They travel thousands of kilometres between their breeding and wintering grounds, guided by starlight, the earth’s magnetic field, and the changing light of dawn and dusk.
Yet a growing number of studies suggest that our cities are turning into dangerous obstacles for these night travellers. Artificial light from buildings, billboards and stadiums can confuse birds, causing them to crash into windows or circle endlessly until they drop from exhaustion. In one study, researchers found that a single tall building lit at night could attract and trap thousands of migrating birds in a single season.
The problem is not limited to skyscrapers. Even medium-sized cities in China now report collisions (碰撞) during migration seasons. Scientists say that light pollution, together with habitat loss, has become one of the main threats to migratory birds worldwide.
The good news is that simple measures can make a big difference. Some cities have launched “Lights Out” programmes, asking building owners to turn off unnecessary lights during migration seasons. Others have replaced plain glass with specially designed windows that birds can see. In Beijing, volunteers have begun to rescue injured birds in early morning, when most collisions happen. “Every bird saved is a small victory,” said one volunteer. “But the real battle is to make our cities safer for them at night.”
28. What does the underlined word “obstacles” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Homes. B. Dangers. C. Signals. D. Restaurants.
29. Why do birds crash into buildings at night
A. They are attracted by the light. B. They cannot see the glass clearly in the dark.
C. They fly too fast to stop in time. D. They are forced to change their route.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The problem of light pollution is unsolvable.
B. Cities are making efforts to protect birds.
C. Most collisions happen at noon.
D. Volunteers have stopped the problem completely.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. How Birds Find Their Way B. City Lights and Migrating Birds
C. The Beauty of Night Skies D. A New Home for Wild Birds
D
In an age when typing has become second nature, the simple act of writing by hand may seem outdated. Yet a growing body of research suggests that handwriting is far more than an old habit — it plays a unique role in how we learn and think.
Scientists who study the brain have found that writing letters by hand activates regions related to reading and memory far more strongly than typing does. When children write by hand, they form a mental picture of each letter, which helps them recognise words more quickly. For adults, taking notes by hand forces the brain to summarise and rephrase, rather than simply copying what a speaker says. This “deeper processing” is why handwritten notes are often remembered better than typed ones.
Handwriting also gives us a sense of personal connection. A handwritten letter, with its uneven lines and crossed-out words, carries warmth that no email can match. It records not just words, but a moment of thought, a mood, even a personality.
None of this means we should give up keyboards. Typing is faster and more efficient for long texts. But the choice between typing and writing is not either/or. The best approach may be to use each tool where it serves us best — and to remember that the humble pen still has its own quiet power.
32. What did scientists find about handwriting
A. It slows down the learning process.
B. It activates brain regions related to reading and memory.
C. It makes note-taking more difficult.
D. It has no effect on memory.
33. Why are handwritten notes often remembered better
A. They are longer than typed notes.
B. They require deeper processing of information.
C. They are easier to read back.
D. They contain fewer mistakes.
34. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A. We should stop using keyboards.
B. Typing is completely unnecessary.
C. We should use both typing and handwriting wisely.
D. Handwriting will soon disappear.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards handwriting
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.

How to Build a Reading Habit That Lasts
Many people want to read more but find it hard to make reading a regular part of their lives. The problem is not a lack of time; it is a lack of habit. 36 Here are four practical ways to make reading stick.
Start small. Do not tell yourself you must read fifty pages a day. 37 Even ten minutes a day, kept up for weeks, can add up to several books a year.
Make it easy to begin. Keep a book on your desk, in your bag, or on your bedside table — anywhere you are likely to wait or rest. 38 The less effort it takes to start, the more often you will start.
Connect reading with something you already do. For example, read for fifteen minutes with your morning coffee, or listen to an audiobook while walking to school. 39
Finally, do not be afraid to stop reading a book you dislike. Reading should be a pleasure, not a duty. 40 Life is too short for books that bore you.
A. Put your phone in another room while you read.
B. Begin with a goal you can easily reach, such as a few pages or ten minutes.
C. This way, reading becomes part of your daily routine instead of an extra task.
D. If a book fails to hold your interest, put it down and try another.
E. Instead, reading is a skill that improves with practice.
F. When you have a spare moment, the book is already within reach.
G. Ask your friends to recommend their favourite books.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After Grandpa passed away, Sam found an old notebook in his study. Inside were pages of careful records: dates, weather conditions, and the names of birds. For forty years, Grandpa had watched the migrating birds that stopped by the small lake behind their house every autumn and spring. The last page was unfinished, dated only a week before he died. “Only two more seasons,” Grandpa had written. “I hoped to finish ten full years of records.”
Sam knew little about birds, but he could not bear to see the notebook left unfinished. On the first day of spring, he took the notebook and a pair of old binoculars and sat down by the lake.
That first morning was cold and quiet. Sam waited for hours and saw nothing. He almost gave up. Then, near sunset, a small group of wild ducks landed on the water, their wings making soft splashes. Sam wrote down the date, the weather, and what he saw — slowly and carefully, the way Grandpa had.
Weeks passed. Sam began to recognise the calls of different birds. He learned that warblers came early in the morning and that herons usually appeared after rain. His records grew longer, and neighbours began to smile at him; some even stopped to ask what he was doing.
One evening in late April, Sam saw something unusual — a bird with a white patch on its left wing that he had never seen before. Grandpa’s notes mentioned such a bird: “The white-patched visitor. Saw it once in 2019. I hope it returns.”
Para 1: Sam held his breath and watched the bird closely.

Text 10
W: Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to share some simple but effective ways to keep healthy in our busy lives.
First, never skip breakfast. Many students rush to school without eating, which is bad for both concentration and health. A glass of milk and an egg will do.
Second, exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym. Walking for 30 minutes a day, or taking the stairs instead of the lift, can make a real difference.
Third, don’t forget to have enough sleep. Teenagers need at least eight hours of sleep every night. Staying up late to play with phones is the worst habit you can develop.
Finally, remember to drink enough water — about eight glasses a day — and to limit sugary drinks.
If you can keep these habits, you’ll find yourself more energetic and happier. Thank you for listening.
Q18: What is the speaker mainly talking about Q19: According to the speaker, what is the worst habit Q20: How much sleep do teenagers need every night

第一节 (应用文,15分):
One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear from you. Our school held a “Reading Month” in October, and it was a great success.
During the month, we organised a book-sharing meeting where students recommended their favourite books. We also set up a “Good Books Corner” in the library, displaying over a hundred newly selected books. In addition, we invited a local writer to give a lecture on how to read classics.
I benefited a lot from these activities. Not only did I discover many wonderful books, but I also made new friends who share the same interest. I’m sure you would enjoy them too if you were here.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (读后续写,25分):
One possible version:
Para 1: Sam held his breath and watched the bird closely. It circled the lake once, then landed near the reeds, its white patch shining in the evening light. Sam turned to the last page of the notebook and wrote down the date and the weather, his hand trembling slightly. “The white-patched visitor has returned,” he wrote at last. He watched it until it flew away into the dusk, feeling as if Grandpa were sitting beside him, nodding with quiet satisfaction.
Para 2: That autumn, when the first birds arrived, Sam found himself doing something he had never imagined. He had started a small bird-watching group at school. Every weekend, he led his classmates to the lake, notebooks in hand, teaching them how to recognise different birds by their calls. The group grew from three members to thirty. On the last page of his own new notebook, Sam wrote: “This is my first season. Grandpa finished nine. Together, we will never stop watching.”
