Ⅲ. 短文理解
Jeans are one of the most popular kinds of trousers in the world. But do you know how they were invented In 1850, a young man called Levi Strauss went to San Francisco to sell cloth to the miners there. He found that the miners needed strong trousers, because their work was hard and their trousers broke easily. So Levi made some trousers out of a strong cloth. The miners loved them very much. Later, a man named Jacob Davis added metal rivets to the pockets, so the pockets wouldn't break. The two men worked together and got a patent for their jeans in 1873. At first, jeans were only worn by working people. In the 1950s, movie stars began to wear jeans, and young people all over the world followed them. Today, people of all ages wear jeans, and billions of pairs are sold every year.

My Favorite Invention
Of all the great inventions in the world, my favorite one is the mobile phone. It was invented in 1973 by Martin Cooper, an American engineer.
Mobile phones are used for many things. In the past, people could only make phone calls with them. But now, a smart phone is like a small computer. We can use it to chat with friends, take photos, watch movies, pay for things and even study online. My grandmother used to write letters to her family, but now she talks with them on the phone every day. It makes our life much more convenient than before.
However, every coin has two sides. Some people spend too much time on their phones, which is bad for their eyes and study.
In my opinion, the mobile phone is a wonderful invention. If we use it in a right way, it will bring us more happiness.U1—U8全单元综合训练

The microwave oven is now a common thing in almost every family kitchen. But do you know that it was invented by accident
In 1945, Percy Spencer, an American engineer, was working on radar machines in a company. One day, he was standing near an active radar set with a chocolate bar (巧克力棒) in his pocket. After a few minutes, he found that the chocolate had become soft and even a little burnt! He was surprised, because he hadn't done anything to it. Then he remembered the heat from the radar machine. Was it the radar that melted (融化) the chocolate
Being curious (好奇的), Spencer decided to do some tests. First, he put some corn seeds near the radar machine. To his excitement, the seeds turned into popcorn! Then he tried an egg, and it exploded (爆炸) very quickly. Spencer realized that microwaves could heat food quickly and safely.
He then worked with his company to build a metal box, in which microwaves could be kept to heat food. In 1947, the first microwave oven appeared. It was as tall as a man and cost about 3,000 dollars, so only big restaurants could afford it at first. Later, the oven became smaller and cheaper. By the 1980s, microwave ovens had entered millions of families around the world.
A piece of melted chocolate changed the way we cook. Sometimes, an accident plus curiosity equals a great invention.

A. It became popcorn. B. It exploded quickly. C. It turned soft. D. Nothing happened.
49. Why could only big restaurants afford the first microwave oven ( )
A. Because it was as tall as a man and very expensive. B. Because it was dangerous. C. Because families didn't need it. D. Because it was made of gold.
50. What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph ( )
A. Chocolate is good for health. B. Radar machines are useful. C. Curiosity about accidents may lead to great inventions. D. Microwave ovens are cheap now.

When we talk about Chinese porcelain (瓷器), we must mention a small town in Jiangxi Province — Jingdezhen. It is known as the "Porcelain Capital" of China, and its history of making porcelain goes back over 1,700 years.
Jingdezhen is a lucky place. It has fine kaolin (高岭土), which is the best material for making porcelain. It also has plenty of forests, so there was enough wood for the kilns (窑) in the past. What's more, the Chang River made it easy to carry the porcelain to other places.
The porcelain made in Jingdezhen is famous for being "as white as jade, as thin as paper, as bright as a mirror and as musical as a chime (钟)". In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the best porcelain was made for the emperors. Even a small bowl took many workers several months to finish. Porcelain from Jingdezhen was carried along the Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road to Europe, Africa and other parts of Asia. Foreign kings loved Chinese porcelain so much that they regarded it as treasure and paid a lot of gold for it. In Europe, people even believed that porcelain could be used to find out whether the food had poison (毒药) in it!
Today, Jingdezhen is still full of life. Thousands of young artists from all over the world come here to study and create. Old skills and new ideas meet in this ancient town, and Chinese porcelain culture is coming back to life again.

Should students wear school uniforms People hold different opinions about this question.
Supporters (支持者) think school uniforms are necessary. First, uniforms make students look neat and bring a sense of belonging (归属感) to the school. Second, they save students' time. "In the morning, I don't need to think about what to wear. I just put on my uniform and go," says Zhang Lan, a Grade 9 student. Third, school uniforms can stop students from comparing with each other about clothes. If everyone wears the same clothes, students will focus more on their studies than on fashion.
However, some students and parents don't agree. They think most school uniforms are not beautiful, and students don't like to wear them. "Some of my classmates feel uncomfortable in the big, loose uniforms," says Li Ming. "We are teenagers, and we hope to show our own styles." Some parents also think that a good uniform costs a lot of money, and children grow fast, so they need to buy new ones every year.
Now, some schools are trying to find better ways. They invite students and parents to help design (设计) the new uniforms together. The new uniforms are both comfortable and good-looking, and students can choose between a sporty style and a formal one.
In short, uniforms themselves are not the problem. What matters is whether they are comfortable, good-looking and designed with love. When students are allowed to take part in the design, they will be happier to wear their uniforms.
56. How many reasons do supporters give in the passage ( )

59. Some schools now invite students and parents to ______. ( )

60. What's the writer's attitude (态度) towards school uniforms ( )
A. Uniforms should be stopped at once. B. Only expensive uniforms are good. C. Comfortable and well-designed uniforms with students' participation are better. D. Uniforms have nothing to do with students.
D
