On a summer morning in 2023, we went for a hike on the Bright Angel Trail (小径), one of the most popular trails in Grand Canyon National Park. As scholars of tourism, we found ourselves discussing a common question: Are the national parks overcrowded Most people say yes, but we believe that answer is too simplistic. Although some specific locations within parks can get overcrowded, these people often wrongly assume that having other people around prevents them from enjoying the beauty of nature.
Hiking on the busy trail that morning, we noticed something uplifting. Two families, one hiking up, the other hiking down, were chatting and sharing insights at a bend. A young hiker shared her binoculars (双筒望远镜) with an elderly man, focusing them on a distant, rare desert bighorn sheep. Another hiker pointed out a California condor sailing above and others joined him in admiring the large bird.
Despite the number of people on the trail, we didn’t feel crowded. Rather, we felt a natural sense of community and togetherness — what anthropologist Victor Turner called “communitas.” Other researchers have also noted the value of experiencing national parks in the presence of others. Visitor surveys conducted in the Cleveland National Forest in summer 2025 show that the more people experience communitas, the less likely they’re to feel crowded.
Actually, each person has the power to shift how they react to the number of people around them in parks. For instance, when people see visitors as different from themselves, they’re more likely to feel crowded. But by recognizing that tendency and reframing the interaction, people are more likely to find communitas.
This summer, we urge you to enter America’s national parks with a different perspective. Experience the awe of watching Old Faithful erupt with hundreds of travelers in Yellowstone National Park. Find wonderment in sharing a sunrise from Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park or sunset from Olmsted Point in Yosemite National Park. Most importantly, be the person who gives a neighboring camper that extra hot dog or takes photos for another family.
24. What do most people often think of traveling with others around
A. Rewarding. B. Unpleasant. C. Avoidable. D. Simplistic.
25. What did the author notice that morning
A. The popular trail was less busy. B. Most hikers preferred to travel alone.
C. All travelers were being helpful. D. Hikers interacted harmoniously.
26. How does the author support his own viewpoint in paragraph 3
A. By quoting professional evidence. B. By sharing fellow travelers’ opinions.
C. By evaluating his hiking experiences. D. By arguing against Victor Turner’s insight.
27. What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph
A. Enjoy adventures fully. B. Skip overcrowded trails.
C. Seek communitas in parks. D. Shift perspectives frequently.

You may be attracted by pictures of animals in the wild. You might have imagined yourself taking pictures of animals that are seldom seen in the city. If you do get that chance, you may want to consider the following tips or rules.
First of all, a lot of professional photographers give respect (尊重) to these animals and the environment they are in. Just remember that you should respect the animals and the environment in case these animals bite or attack you.
Keep in mind that you are taking pictures of real, live, wild animals. A wild animal may bite to protect itself. You must be aware while taking their pictures and be gentle in all your movements. Do not feed the animals, or interact (互动) with animals that are sleeping or caring for their young.
Change the flash of your camera to natural light, so the animals will not be frightened or surprised when you start shooting. Animals do not react well when they are surprised. Be very patient. Make sure you are aware of the changes in behavior of the animal and its emotions. Be familiar with the animals’ natural habitat.
Now if those rules are clear, it is time for planning. Consider the weather, some animals do not go out when it is raining while some animals love the rain. Therefore, a little research on the weather will not hurt. You should consider taking pictures after sunrise and before sunset. Now if the animal is active at night, then you should prepare to fight against not only the wild but also the darkness.
An adventure in the wild will make you very excited. However, you should be well prepared. Have experts to back you up, and also a permit (许可证) for doing the photo shoot. If you do not have any of these, then maybe you should consider visiting the zoo instead.
32. What should you do to show respect to the wildlife
A. Tuning off the flash. B. Caring for their babies.
C. Feeding them whenever you want. D. Taking pictures when they are sleeping.
33. What should you consider before taking pictures with the wildlife
A. Food and water. B. Weather and time.
C. Emotions and safety. D. Place and transportation.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Most animals love being taken photos of.
B. We have to go to the zoo to take photos.
C. Only experts have a permit to take photos.
D. There is danger while taking photos with wild animals.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To advertise a zoo. B. To do some research.
C. To give some advice. D. To introduce some wildlife.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum.” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White said. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said. “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores: Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-T-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

66. Last week, I took part in an activity organized by the volunteer club, which aimed to bridge the gap between the elderly and digital advances.
At a local senior center, we started with a presentation on digital tools, like smartphones and apps. I was paired with Grandma Li. I taught her how to use WeChat to video-call her son who lives far away. Seeing the excitement on her face when she finally saw her son's face on the screen was truly heart-warming.
This experience was very rewarding. It made me understand that a little help can bring great joy to the elderly. I'm eager to join more such activities in the future.
67.
In an instant, I made up my mind and asked the server to bring some chopsticks for me. When they arrived, I took them carefully in my hand. I looked up at my boss and we smiled at each other. As I grasped the chopsticks and took hold of a bit of rice and meat, trying to get them into my mouth, my fingers slipped and the food fell back to the plate. However, I didn’t give up, and eventually managed to eat my entire meal by using chopsticks. It felt like a great achievement to me.
In the end, I wasn’t embarrassed at all. I’m glad that my new boss was so thoughtful a person that he could take everything into consideration. And I’m really happy that I decided to ask for chopsticks. After that, we went out for lunch often in this restaurant. Despite suffering a number of setbacks, I persevered in my attempts to use chopsticks. Now, I have totally mastered the skill of using chopsticks. And as an old saying goes, practice makes perfect. It really isn’t that difficult once you get used to it.

1.
M: Wow, that was some journey.
W: Yeah, I thought we’d never get here, all those delays. Well, it’s nice to be back. Traveling is great, but I’m glad that I’ll be back surrounded by all the familiar things.
M: Well, it’s not quite as comfortable as the room we’ve been in for the past fortnight.
W: No. And all that time not having to cook our own meals was great.
M: Yes, well, it’s over now. Back to reality. Come on, let’s get the bags sorted out.
3.
M: So are we ready to go
W: Yes, I think so. The cars are packed. We have snacks and music and maps in the car.
M: Did you get the camera
W: Got it. Did you fill up the tank
M: Yes, it’s all set.
W: You are sure we are not forgetting anything.
M: I’m sure we’ve got all our bases covered.
W: Well, let’s get going then. I love road trips.
5.
M: Hey! Hi there! Sharon. Fancy meeting you here. Paris, France of all places!
W: Donald! What a coincidence! It’s a small world, isn’t it
M: Yeah. We’ve just finished our tour. We’re going back tomorrow, but I wish I had more time.
W: So do I.
M: So where have you been, Sharon
W: Well...we started in London. You know, the Tower of London.
M: Oh yeah, we did that. I liked the Bloody Tower. Did you enjoy it
W: I don’t think we went there. But I’m sure my son wishes he’d been there. They should improve the brochure. I didn’t see anything in it about that.
M: You mean you didn’t go to the Bloody Tower! What a pity! Well, what about Italy then
W: Well, we had a great time in Italy.
8.
W: Good afternoon, everyone. I’m Michelle. Not too long ago, I took on the challenge of learning to play the guitar. As an athlete, I thought mastering the guitar would be easy with enough discipline. But it wasn’t just about physical discipline. It tested my patience, strategy, and a different kind of mental commitment. I tried to play complex pieces before mastering the basics. It was a struggle, but I learned to respect the process. Soon my first public performance arrived. I thought I would be very nervous, but strangely, I wasn’t. I played without missing a beat. The applause and cheers were truly amazing. Every struggle, every wrong note was worth it in that moment. In conclusion, I want to remind you that taking on any new skill requires more than just physical strength; it demands respect for the process and the courage to keep pushing forward. Thank you.
11.
W: So, what did you do in the summer holiday
M: I went to France. I took my bike over on a ship from England.
W: That’s funny. I went to France too! But I caught a plane from London to Nice. Where did you go on your bike
M: After arriving in France, I took a train to the Loire Valley. From there, I cycled all around. I loved riding my bike through the countryside. What about you How was Nice for you
W: It’s lovely, with the beach in front and the hills behind. I stayed in a fantastic hotel. It was an old castle, and the rooms were comfortable!
M: I didn’t stay in hotels. I stayed in local people’s homes. I met lots of interesting people and learned so much about France. I often joined them for dinner, so I tried lots of food I didn’t have at home.
W: I like to choose what I eat. There are so many fantastic restaurants and shops in Nice. I love shopping so much that on my last day, I went shopping and forgot about the time. I didn’t catch my train!
14.
W: Hello, Alfonso, you look really well. What’s new
M: Hey, Maya. My main news is that I want to change jobs next year. I want to have more time for my painting hobby.
W: Roberto said you hoped to buy his house. Is that right
M: Yes, Roberto’s place is much bigger than our home and there’s room for a painting studio. Plus, Kara says she wants to turn the storeroom into an office.
W: Great. How are Kara and the children doing recently
M: Very well.
16.
W: Happy New Year, Mike!
M: Happy New Year!
W: Have you made any resolutions
M: I’d like to eat less and exercise more this year. Three hamburgers a day is probably not a good idea.
W: Yeah, many people hope to be healthier in the new year. You always see a lot of people start joining gyms. I heard some kind of statistic that gyms are always 50% more crowded in the month of January. And then usually by February, it’s back to normal.
M: It’s so true. It’s always difficult to keep up the workout routine.
18.
M: OK, everyone. I hope this won’t take too long. Scheduled on October 4th, the school trip is only one week away. Now I’m going to tell you what you need to bring for the trip. Please listen carefully, just in case you miss anything important. We’re going for two days. It means that the trip will end on 5th. So you only need to take a small bag, with the right clothes and no extras. We’re going to be outside for much of the time, so pack some warm clothes for daytime. You needn’t bring a towel unless you plan to go swimming. There will be a simple meal for the whole group in the evening. After that, we’ll organize something special for you — a music party in the hall. So you need suitable clothes for that. You don’t need to be dressed in the latest fashionable clothes. Just wear the clothes you like best. Well, that’s it, I think. If you have any other questions, please come to my office this afternoon.
