Driving to a meeting at the Calgary Construction Association, I relaxed to CBC Radio, eager for non-construction news. I heard an interview with Elaine, who’d taught Chicago’s cast to sing and was selling a new singing-lesson CD. Having just been “fired” from my husband’s band for not taking singing seriously, I thought I should buy it.
Two years later, on a lunch break, I finally decided to look online and buy the CD. It turned out Elaine Overholt was coming to Calgary that weekend!
On Saturday morning, I arrived at the Cantos Music Centre with 60 strangers. After we settled in, Elaine arrived to enthusiastic applause. The morning involved vocal (发声的) exercises: controlled breathing, mouth stretches, and sounds like “Maw-meee-mee-mee.”
Then came individual performances in front of the entire group. Nervous, I watched others perform. The first woman went up and sang with a high, trembling voice — unlike her natural tone. I started fooling myself: I could do this. Elaine gave her helpful advice and the woman thanked her before stepping down. The next student stepped up and opened her mouth. She was great! Could be Celine Dion in disguise. When she stopped singing like an angel, I made my move to sneak away.
“Nope!” Elaine yelled from the stage, pointing directly at me. I sank into my chair. She asked my preferred key. “The lowest possible,” I requested. She played a note, and I sang her song about rainbows, instantly realizing it was too high. By the end, only dogs could hear me. Elaine said, “You really made that your own,” and talked about “key choice” and “breath control”.
As I left the stage, the crowd surprised me. A man shook my hand, grinning, “You just inspired me to try!” Another woman hugged me, “Your courage moved me.” Their warmth transformed my embarrassment into pride — I hadn’t sung perfectly, but I’d sung truly. And that mattered most.
24. Why did the author want to buy Elaine’s CD
A. To prepare for a meeting. B. To better her singing.
C. To explore vocal coaching. D. To join her husband’s band.
25. How did the author feel after the first woman’s performance
A. Secure and confident. B. Anxious and doubtful.
C. Amused and entertained. D. Lost and embarrassed.
26. Why did the author try to leave before her turn
A. She found the activity a little boring.
B. She worried about not finding the right key.
C. She felt discouraged after hearing an excellent singer.
D. She didn’t like performing in front of too many people.
27. How did others react to the author’s performance
A. They appreciated her courage. B. They offered her further guidance.
C. They were impressed by her voice. D. They encouraged her to sing more.
C
“I am not crazy,” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine-combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”
28. What do some of Farber’s coworkers think of him
A. He’s odd. B. He’s strict. C. He’s brave. D. He’s rude.
29. Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets
A. He was trained in it at university. B. He was inspired by another veterinarian.
C. He benefited from it as a patient. D. He wanted to save money for pet owners.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B. The complexity of veterinarians’ work.
C. Examples of rare animal diseases. D. The effectiveness of holistic medicine.
31. Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
A. To prove Farber’s point. B. To emphasize its importance.
C. To praise veterinarians. D. To advocate animal protection.
D
A popular musician posts a music video or an athlete shares a workout, and suddenly they seem like part of our lives. People like and share these posts, and over time, admiration can start to feel like friendship — people like to think they know celebrities. Psychology Today defines this phenomenon as a parasocial relationship (准社会关系) — a one-sided connection that exists only in the fan’s mind. First identified in 1956 to describe television viewers feeling closely connected to on-screen figures, this behavior has existed for ages.
Today, social platforms deepen this illusion by offering constant, seemingly real updates on the lives of public figures. However, what audiences actually see is a carefully selected version of reality, edited for perfection rather than truth. Despite this created closeness, young people frequently view celebrities as standards for success. This influence often unconsciously shapes everything from their self-image to their long-term career goals.
These relationships are not always harmful. For some, especially those who feel left out in society, seeing public figures with similar backgrounds can offer a sense of belonging. These connections can inspire confidence and make people feel less alone. In that sense, they can serve a real and meaningful purpose, offering comfort.
The danger arises when the line between admiration and imagination disappears. The relationship becomes unhealthy when fans act as if they truly know a celebrity. They might take planned posts as personal messages and develop unrealistic expectations. Furthermore, these feelings now extend to artificial intelligence (AI). Chatbots acting like real friends can produce deep emotional responses, making it harder to tell real human connection from AI.
Admiration itself is fine. Music, sports and entertainment have long connected communities, but that influence needs clear boundaries. Without them, simply watching a video is easily mistaken for close friendship, and carefully chosen content is mistaken for true connection. Parasocial relationships should remain what they are: distant and one-sided. In a digital age where everything is designed to feel personal, we must remember that it is not.
32. Why did the author mention the musician and the athlete in the first paragraph
A. To reveal the market value of stars’ posts.
B. To criticize celebrities’ too-much-sharing.
C. To show an imagined familiarity with stars.
D. To illustrate progressive fan-star connection.
33. How do digital bonds built on celebrity posts affect the youth
A. They shape youths’ personal values. B. They make the youth perfectionists.
C. They ease beauty standards for youths. D. They develop the youth’s social skills.
34. Which of the following is an example of the “danger” in paragraph 4
A. Flooding friends’ chats with celebrity updates.
B. Using AI chatbots to solve academic challenges.
C. Taking idols’ livestream as private video calls.
D. Tracking a star’s posts to monitor their traces.
35. What may be the best title for the text
A. Music and Sports: The Uniting Strength
B. Posts and Responses: The Healing Circle
C. Blessing or Disaster: The Booming Internet
D. Stardom or Friendship: The Mistaken Closeness

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Feeling stuck in the same old routine makes life feel rather dull — but adding some excitement doesn’t have to involve massive changes. Rather, making small changes could turn your ordinary days into something special. 36 Here are some creative ideas to integrate a little adventure into your daily life.
Break your routine with a morning walk. Rather than going through the same motions each morning, you could try starting your day with a walk outside. 37 It’ll clear your mind and set a positive tone for everything that follows during the day.
Start a random conversation. Connecting with other people is the best way to bring some joy to your day and you should try to strike up a chat with someone you cross paths with. This could be a neighbor you’ve never spoken to or a colleague from another department — either way, you’ll probably hear some interesting stories and find common interests you didn’t expect. 38
Set a weekly challenge for yourself. Giving yourself a small goal each week will make your life more engaging and that’s why you should try something new, like reading a book from a genre you usually avoid. 39 Achieving these personal challenges will give you a sense of accomplishment to keep things interesting.
40 Sign up for one that you wouldn’t normally consider, such as glassblowing or aerial yoga. Trying something completely new is a guaranteed way to feel a little more excited! Just remember that you’re not trying to be perfect, but rather, simply enjoy the novelty (新颖) of the experience.
A. Set yourself a higher goal.
B. We’ve got just the list to do that!
C. You could also try to follow a difficult recipe.
D. Making such a simple change will energize you.
E. Book a last-minute class in something unexpected.
F. Discovering new places makes each day more exciting.
G. Opening up to new people will make every day more meaningful.

It was an ordinary Sunday morning. The sun was coming out from the clouds, casting a warm light over the park. Amy was running along the winding path, her feet hitting the ground in a steady rhythm. She loves running because she believes that after a tough week at work, it could not only exercise her body but also free her mind from stress and exhaustion.
Every Sunday, the park was alive with activities. Children were chasing each other on the grass. Elderly people were practicing tai chi in slow, graceful movements. Young couples were walking hand in hand by the lake. Amy breathed deeply, taking in the fresh smell of flowers. Her steps felt light and her heart was at peace. Everything felt perfect.
Suddenly, a sharp cry cut through the morning calm. Amy slowed down and saw a crowd gathering near the fountain, their faces filled with panic. She ran toward them, pushing through the circle of people. An old woman was lying on the ground, her face pale and her lips slightly purple. Beside her, another elderly woman was shouting, “She’s having a heart attack! Please help her!” People stood frozen, some dialing emergency numbers, but no one gave her a hand.
Amy’s mind raced. Her friend Harriet, a nurse at the city hospital, had once asked her to attend a public welfare activity for CPR (心肺复苏) training in her community three months ago. She remembered rolling her eyes at the practice dummy (假人), whispering to Harriet that she would never need such boring knowledge. Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined facing a real emergency like this. At that time, she was more interested in the small gifts provided than the training itself. Now, staring at the struggling woman, whose breath grew weaker and eyes began to roll back, Amy knew she was the only hope. Taking a deep breath, she forced her shaking legs to move forward, her heart beating wildly as if jumping out of her chest, and explained that she had learned CPR.
注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Let me try,” Amy placed her hands on the old woman’s chest.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
Dear fellow students,
As we step into our senior year, I strongly call on everyone to embrace it with devotion and good health.
For our studies, I suggest we set clear goals and break them down into daily tasks. Besides, it is very necessary to focus on efficiency during class and self-study time instead of staying up late. And remember, regularly reviewing mistakes is more effective than doing countless new exercises. For health, never skip morning runs or PE class, for even a 20-minute workout between study sessions refreshes the mind and boosts energy, which certainly sustains long-term effort.
I sincerely hope that next year, we can say with pride, “I’ve tried without regret in my devoted and healthy senior year.”
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写
“Let me try,” Amy placed her hands on the old woman’s chest. She tried her best to recall every step of CPR she had learned in the training, pressing down on the chest steadily with the correct strength and rhythm. After several cycles, Amy bent down to give rescue breaths. Sweat ran down her face, but she didn’t stop. The crowd held their breath and watched silently, their anxious eyes fixed on the pale face beneath her. After what felt like forever, the old woman coughed weakly, and Amy’s heart leaped with hope. Just then, a sound of an ambulance grew louder.
As Amy’s strength was fading, she noticed the ambulance arriving. The paramedics rushed to the old woman and took over the rescue work. Amy stepped back, her legs worn out, but she kept her eyes on the old woman. Within minutes, the woman’s color slowly returned, and she began to breathe steadily. A medic patted Amy’s shoulder and said, “You saved her.” All the people around broke into cheers. At that moment, Amy realized every small skill we learn, even if we think it useless at first, can be a bright light to pull others out of danger one day.

Text 1
W: I’ve been staring at this math problem for an hour and I still can’t figure it out.
M: You know, sometimes studying in a group really helps. We’re meeting at the library at 4. Want to join us
Text 2
M: Have you signed up for the photography club yet I heard they’re going to the botanical garden this weekend.
W: I’d love to, but I work at the café every Saturday now. Maybe next time.
Text 3
M: What do you think about the school’s new rule that we must wear uniforms
W: Honestly, it’s about time. It saves me from deciding what to wear every morning. Plus, it reduces pressure from fellow students.
Text 4
W: Excuse me, do you have the latest novel by that Korean author I saw it online but it’s sold out everywhere.
M: Let me check our system... We do have one copy left on the new arrivals shelf, third row.
Text 5
M: This language learning app is fantastic! It has speech recognition and real-time feedback.
W: Really I’ve been struggling with my pronunciation. Can you show me how to use it
Text 6
M: I can’t access my student account again. It says my password is incorrect, but I’m sure I typed it right.
W: Did you try the “forgot password” option You can reset it through your email.
M: I did, but I never received the reset link. Where did it go and what can I do then
W: Then you’d better go to the IT service center in person. They can justify your identity and reset it for you.
Text 7
M: I’m considering taking a gap year to travel, but I’m worried it might look bad on my resume.
W: Not if you plan it well. I spent six months teaching English in a small village in Spain.
M: Really Wasn’t it hard to communicate
W: It was tough at first, but the experience of connecting with the community was incredibly fulfilling. It taught me independence and adaptability.
M: That sounds amazing. Maybe I should look into volunteer programs abroad instead of just backpacking.
Text 8
W: Welcome back to “Daily Vibe.” Today we have a popular video creator, Alex, to share his tips. Alex, what’s the secret to getting millions of views
M: To be honest, it’s not about the equipment. It’s about telling a story people care about. Find a shared experience and put your unique take on it.
W: And what about the length of the videos Some say shorter is better.
M: For many platforms, yes. Our attention lasts short. A brief, attractive video often works better than a long, detailed one. But it always depends on the content.
Text 9
M: Hey, have you started working on our history project yet You know, the one about cultural exchanges along the Silk Road. It’s due in two weeks.
W: I’ve done some primary reading, but I’m honestly a bit confused. There’s so much information out there, and I can’t tell which sources are reliable.
M: Same here. I went to the library yesterday, but all the relevant books were already checked out. And the online articles I found are either too general or too academic for our level.
W: Exactly! What are we going to do
M: I was thinking—instead of trying to cover the whole Silk Road, what if we narrow it down to one specific city, like Dunhuang That way we can go deeper with fewer sources.
W: That’s a smart idea! But we’ve already submitted our topic proposal to Mr. Johnson. Do you think he’ll allow us to change it at this late stage
M: I can talk to him after class today. He’s pretty flexible, and I think he’d prefer a focused project over a shallow one. Besides, I’ve already found a documentary on Dunhuang that has excellent references.
W: Great! If he agrees, I can handle the art and religion part while you focus on the trade and economics side. We can meet on Friday to combine our findings.
M: Perfect. Let’s cross our fingers that Mr. Johnson says yes.
Text 10
Welcome to today’s health section. Have you ever heard of the “Power of Ten” exercise It’s the latest trend in the fitness world, and it’s surprisingly simple. The idea is to choose just one simple exercise, like push-ups, and do ten repetitions, ten times a day. That’s it.
