2.Through the development of teaching activities, we can cultivate students' thinking ability of analyzing and inferring the content of the text, understand the logical relationship in the article.
3.Through the study of this lesson, students can understand the influence of scientific and technological inventions on their lives and realize that teenagers can change the world through practice.
Great inventions could change our lives, in this unit, let's explore
inventions. Where dosmart ideas come from What qualities do
inventors have What drives people to invent By the end of this
unit, you will make a display board about an invention.
After completing the unit, you will be able to:
use words and expressions in the unit to talk about inventions.
use to-infinitive and -ing as object to talk about invention ideas.
explain the importance of invention.
Look at the picture and answer the questions.
1.What do you know about the differences between the lives of ancient people and ours

1.What do you know about the differences between the lives of ancient people and ours
There are many differences. Ancient people lived in caves or simple huts , while we live in comfortable houses and buildings. They hunted animals and gathered fruits for food , but we have different kinds of food from supermarkets. They mainly travelled on foot, while we have cars , trains , and airplanes to travel.
2.What caused these differences?
The main reason for these diferences is the development of science and technology。
Look at the pictures and answer the questions
1.What are these inventions
The inventions from left to right are the compass, the wheel, the computer, and the smartphone.
2.How have they changed our lives
The compass has helped people find directions, making exploration and navigation(航海)easier.
The wheel has been widely used in(被广泛用于)transportation, making it possible to carry heavy goods over long distances;
The computer has changed the way we work, study, and communicate. We can get information, do office work, and have online classes with it.
The smartphone has made our lives more convenientWe can use it to make phone calls , send messages, take photos, surf the internet.and use various apps at any time.

1Easton LaChappelle,a 14-year-old student, stood beside his work at a science fair. It was a robotic arm. He built it out of plastic blocks and fishing line.
2“Hello," said a girl with an artificial arm, as she shook hands with Easton's work.
3This was the first time Easton met Jenny, a girl with a special condition, She was born without an arm. Her artificial arm was just a simple hook, but it cost $80,000.What's worse, children like her grow quickly and need new arms all the time.

4“It blew me away! l built my arm for only $300," thought Easton, “I must lend a hand to people like her."
5After the fair, Easton's room became a lab. He stayed there all dayHe always tried to improve his work. For his 16th birthday, Easton got a 3-D printer, And with it, he invented an artificial arm, It was able to move with brain signals of the user, But it wasn't good enough yet: the arm weighed 3.6 kilograms. It was too heavy for a child.

6Easton kept working on it, He enjoyed fixing problems one after another. And finally he hit on success at age 23. His design only weighed 0.5 kilograms and cost around $500!
7Easton's invention has helped many children. He didn't want to make money from it, He decided to post his design online... for free! People can download the design and make an artificial arm with their own 3-D printers!

End (Paras. 7–8)
A 14-year-old student built a robotic arm out of plastic blocksand fishing line.
He met a girl who was born without an arm at a science fair.
He thought he must lend a hand to people like her.
He invented an artificial arm with a 3-D printer when he was 16.
But it wasn't good enough yet.
Finally he hit on success at age 23.
His invention has helped many children.
He decided to post his design online for free!
Complete the chart with the words and expressions from the passage
Where: At a(n) 1
Who: Jenny, a girl born 2
Problem to solve: Jenny's artificial arm cost $80,000. But children like her ,so they always need new arms.
How did Easton come up with the idea
What are Easton's inventions
Age 14: A robot arm, lt was made from plastic blocks and4
Age 16: An artificial arm.lt could 5 with brain signals, but weighed 3.6 kilograms.
Age 23: Another artificial arm. lt6 just 0.5 kilograms and around $500.

Think and share
1.How would Jenny's life change with Easton's invention
With Easton's invention, Jenny could have a lighter and much cheaper artificlal am. lt would be much easier for her to use and replace her artificial arm as she grows up.
2.What can you learn from Easton
We can learn from Easton that we should be creative and persistent(坚持不懈的)in solving problems. We should also be kind and willing to help others.
