Grandma also joined a video chat group with her old friends from the village. They share photos of their grandchildren and talk every evening. “I feel much closer to them now,” she said.

Zhang Wei is a 32-year-old engineer from Shanghai. In 2020, he made a big decision — he left his well-paid job in the city and returned to his hometown in Gansu Province to start a new project.
Zhang Wei’s hometown is a small village in the mountains. When he was a child, the village was very poor. People used to farm on small pieces of land. There was no running water or electricity in many homes. Children had to walk over two hours to get to the nearest school.
After Zhang Wei finished college, he worked in Shanghai for eight years. During those years, he never forgot his hometown. He often thought about how to help the village develop. Finally, he decided to go back and bring changes.
Zhang Wei used his engineering skills to build a small factory that uses solar energy (太阳能). The factory produces machines that help farmers water their crops more efficiently. With these machines, farmers can save water and grow more vegetables. “In the past, farmers had to carry water from faraway rivers,” Zhang Wei said. “Now, our machines do the hard work.”
Over the past six years, the village has changed a lot. More than 50 families have started using solar energy in their homes. A new school has been built with the money from the factory. Young people who left the village are starting to come back to work in the new factory.
Zhang Wei feels proud of what he has done. “Development doesn’t mean everyone has to go to big cities,” he said. “We can also make our hometowns better with our knowledge and effort.”

Standing at the top of a staircase in the Louvre in Paris, the Nike, or the Winged Victory (胜利女神), looks down over her admiring crowds. This statue is one of the most famous artworks of Greek art. 36 Later it was brought to Paris and has been on display in the Louvre since 1866.
The Nike consists of two parts: a large ship’s front part, and a standing statue with a total height of more than eighteen feet. It looks like the Winged Victory has just flown down from the sky. 37 The wind blows her dress across her body, gathering it in heavy folds, and streaming behind her. When viewers look at her, they can almost feel the wind from the sea. 38
The statue, as it stands today in the Louvre, has been partly repaired. The right wing is a modern copy, but the missing feet, arms, and head have not been recovered, giving viewers much to imagine. For example, did the Nike hold objects in her hands In fact, people found her right hand in 1950, whose fingers are spread out. 39 She must have simply raised her right arm in greeting. Her head may have looked straight ahead, and viewers can only guess about the features of her face.
40 As one of the few existing examples of original Greek sculpture, it will continue to attract viewers, just as it undoubtedly did before.
A. This means that she cannot have held any object.
B. It was found on a Greek island in the Aegean Sea in 1863. C. It’s hard for them to believe such a lifelike statue is made of stone. D. Landing on top of the ship, she celebrates the victory of an ancient battle. E. Although it incompletely survived, the Winged Victory is truly a masterpiece.

Albert Einstein is considered one of the greatest scientists in human history. He was born in Germany in 1879. As a child, Einstein did not speak until he was three years old, and his parents were worried about his development. However, when he was five, his father gave him a compass, and he became fascinated by how the needle always pointed north. This experience made him curious about the mysteries of nature.
Throughout his life, Einstein held a strong belief that science could help people understand the world better. He was convinced that everything in the universe follows certain laws. His most famous theory, the theory of relativity, changed the way people think about time and space. Although the theory was difficult to understand at first, it later proved to be correct through many experiments.
Einstein was also a peace lover. He fought for human rights and spoke out against war. He once said, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” In his judgement, the most important thing in life was not personal success but making a positive impact on the world. Even though he faced many difficulties in his life, he never stopped seeking the truth.
In 1921, Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics. This was a significant milestone in his career. But he remained a modest and ordinary man in many ways. With this in mind, we can see that true greatness lies not in fame, but in the contribution one makes to humanity. Einstein passed away in 1955, but his ideas still influence people around the world.
