Bjarke Ingels, a famous Danish architect born in Copenhagen in 1974, has revolutionized modern architecture with innovative and sustainable designs. His childhood love for drawing and comics (漫画) laid the foundation for his career.
Ingels’ academic and professional experiences further shaped his career. He studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and spent one year as an exchange student in Barcelona, where he gained diverse design perspectives. After graduating, he worked with Rem Koolhaas, a famous Dutch architect, in Rotterdam. This valuable experience helped him gain rich practical skills, and in 2005, he founded his own firm — Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).
Two core concepts run through Ingels’ works: “Yes is More” and “hedonistic sustainability”. “Yes is More” shows his belief in seeking solutions that meet multiple needs instead of making unnecessary compromises (折中). “Hedonistic sustainability,” on the other hand, means creating buildings that are not only environmentally friendly and socially beneficial but also visually attractive. Different from many architects who stick to a fixed style, Ingels always adjusts his designs according to the specific context of each project and the actual needs of users.
Ingels has created many iconic works around the world. One of his most famous works is CopenHill in Copenhagen, a waste-to-energy plant with a ski slope, hiking track and climbing wall on its roof — a perfect combination of environmental protection and entertainment. Another well-known work is VIA 57 West in New York, a pyramid-shaped residential tower with a green courtyard. Besides, he designed the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, which looks like giant stacked (堆叠) LEGO bricks. Currently, he is also working on Toyota Woven City in Japan, a futuristic city powered by hydrogen fuel.
Ingels’ achievements have been widely recognized. He has won many honors, including the European Prize for Architecture in 2010 and a place on Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in 2016. He has taught at top universities, inspiring young architects and proving buildings can serve climate goals and urban life.
24. What primarily inspired Bjarke Ingels to pursue a career in architecture
A. His exchange year in Barcelona.
B. His work with architect Rem Koolhaas.
C. His childhood interest in drawing and comics.
D. His study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

A. He prefers following a fixed architectural style.
B. He believes function is more important than beauty.
C. He mainly focuses on designing residential buildings.
D. He values environmental protection and visual appeal equally.
26. Which of the following can best describe Ingels
A. Brave and honest. B. Innovative and responsible.

In recent years, AI (artificial intelligence) has made remarkable progress in protecting ecosystems — from tracking salmon in the Pacific Northwest to predicting deforestation through sound analysis. Yet these AI tools have long been limited by a critical bottleneck: their application has been restricted by the need for continuous electricity, network access, and expensive field sampling in distant habitats. Now, Project SPARROW is breaking through these barriers, redefining how technology safeguards biodiversity.
Developed by a large company’s AI for Good Lab and released online in May 2026, SPARROW is not just a software system but a complete hardware solution. Its name stands for Solar-Powered Acoustic and Remote Recording Observation Watch. Each SPARROW device combines a low-power processor with visual, acoustic, and environmental sensors, running AI models directly on the device. Powered by solar energy and connected via satellite, the system can operate 24/7 in extreme environments without any human intervention.
What makes SPARROW revolutionary is its intelligent design. The device manages its own power supply, recording data offline and syncing (同步) automatically when connectivity returns. This means researchers no longer need to travel for days through rough land just to collect memory cards from wildlife cameras — a process that once took months can now be completed in hours.
The system’s real-world performance is impressive. Within just 190 days of deployment (部署) across Colombia, Peru, Tanzania and the United States, SPARROW autonomously collected over two million images and sound recordings, showing reliable real-time species classification. In Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula, the device is being tested to locate the elusive Pacific marten — a species that biologists could previously only study by collecting data once a year.
Perhaps most importantly, SPARROW is designed for accessibility. The company has made all its technology free to use, including software, hardware plans and printable components, allowing conservationists worldwide to build their own units at low cost.
By eliminating technical and financial barriers, SPARROW represents a major step toward the “Internet of Living Things” — an intelligent, connected network for monitoring life on Earth. As wildlife declines at alarming rates, such innovation may prove essential to protecting our planet’s natural heritage.
28. What’s the challenge of traditional AI tools in ecosystem protection
A. They failed to identify species in real time.
B. They required power, the Internet and costly data.
C. They could not operate without human support.
D. They were too expensive for most conservationists.
29. How can SPARROW keep working continuously in extreme environments
A. By applying built-in AI models and solar-powered battery.
B. By uploading all collected data to the cloud in real time.
C. By combining a hardware design with an energy-autonomous system.
D. By allowing researchers to collect data without ever visiting the site.
30. What does the underlined word “elusive” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Hard-to-find. B. Hard-to-control.
C. Easy-to-spot. D. Easy-to-identify.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. AI: The Hidden Cost of Protecting Nature
B. AI: A Powerful Tool for Monitoring Wildlife
C. SPARROW: The Solar-Powered Solution to Conservation
D. SPARROW: A Breakthrough in Conservation Technology

Decision fatigue (决策疲劳) is a psychological phenomenon where the quality of decisions declines after a long session of decision-making. It is caused by the limited mental energy we have for making choices each day. While many of us believe we are logical beings capable of weighing every option carefully, decision fatigue shows how our mental resources can be used up over time.
One of the key studies on this phenomenon was conducted in the context of parole hearings (假释听证会). Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort.
Decision fatigue not only affects major life choices but also everyday decisions. For instance, people often report struggling to decide what to eat for dinner after a long day. Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option.
To overcome decision fatigue, some well-known figures have adopted strategies to simplify their daily routines. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is famous for wearing the same style of gray T-shirts to minimize unnecessary choices. Similarly, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein was known for owing multiple identical suits to avoid wasting energy on deciding what to wear each day. In a different context, author Haruki Murakami has shared that he maintains a strict daily routine, including specific writing hours and exercise, to free up mental capacity for his creative work.
Understanding decision fatigue can help us structure our lives more effectively. Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. By managing our mental resources wisely, we can make sound decisions and reduce the stress associated with overwhelming choices
32. What leads to decision fatigue according to the text
A. The lack of time to make decisions.
B. The difficulty of making logical choices.
C. The stress from making important decisions.
D. The limited mental energy for decision-making.
33. What does the study on parole hearings reveal
A. Judges are much stricter after long breaks.
B. Decision fatigue can lead to unfair outcomes.
C. Fatigue causes judges to avoid complicated cases.
D. External factors have no impact on decision-making.
34. What does the author suggest readers shopping online do
A. Make quick decisions. B. Compare different products.
C. Limit the number of choices. D. Choose the most popular products.
35. What is the purpose of adopting routines
A. To reduce the stress of daily work. B. To increase decision-making quality.
C. To enhance overall life satisfaction. D. To create more decision-making chances

Jade was born in China and moved to America when she was a baby. As a sixteen-year-old teenager raised entirely in the USA, she had adapted to local lifestyles. But her parents never skipped the celebrations of traditional Chinese festivals. Still, Jade could never figure out what made these festivals so significant to them. To her, these festivals meant nothing but endless tiring chores (杂务), unfamiliar dishes that didn’t suit her taste, and less time with her friends.
On the morning of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, Jade’s mother got up very early and busied herself with preparations. Jade grabbed her backpack, eager to go out and meet friends. But Mom stopped her, hoping she could help. Looking at all kinds of materials and the mooncake moulds (模具) on the kitchen table, Jade rejected it without hesitation. She complained that she had made plans with her friends long before.
Mom drew Jade down to sit next to her. She didn’t blame her. Instead, she pulled an old photo album out of the kitchen cupboard. Inside were photos of her and Dad shortly after their arrival in America: the family members happily held mooncakes outside their tiny old apartment.
In a soft voice, Mom explained that the festival represented far more than mooncakes and lights. Back in her childhood days in Guangzhou, the whole family would gather on the rooftop each Mid-Autumn night. They enjoyed mooncakes, admiring the full moon. Once, she had ignored those warm moments. But after being thousands of miles away from home, that very moon turned into an invisible (隐形的) bond connecting her to her hometown. “We look up at the same moon as our relatives back in China. This festival holds our family bond unbroken,” she murmured.
Mom closed the photo album and gently put her hand over Jade’s. “You are free to leave if you wish. Go enjoy yourself with friends.” Jade stared hard at her mother, catching a sense of homesick sorrow in her heart.

My View on AI Assignment Grading
Our school has fully adopted Artificial Intelligence Assignment Grading, which has sparked heated discussions. Personally, I think this service is helpful but has obvious limitations.
It saves teachers’ grading time and gives students instant feedback, helping us correct mistakes timely. However, AI cannot judge creative answers, such as compositions with unique ideas. It only focuses on standard answers and ignores students’ creative thinking.
Therefore, AI grading can be a useful tool rather than a complete replacement for teachers.

Jade thought for a short time, and then put down her backpack. Though slightly reluctant, she rolled up her sleeves and threw herself into festival preparations with her parents. Awkwardly, she was clumsy at first and the mooncakes made by her turned out misshapen and looked strange. Under Mom’s patient guidance, she gradually mastered the skills of pressing mixtures into all kinds of moulds. What started as a burden slowly sparked her enthusiasm. Mindful of every step, she grew increasingly skillful and laughter occasionally echoed through the kitchen.
When night fell, all the preparations were over. Seated on the balcony, the whole family admired the brilliant full moon, tasted the homemade mooncakes and shared some touching stories about Mid-Autumn in China. To Jade’s amazement, the mooncakes carried an unexpected delicious flavor. It dawned on her that those once-annoying and tiring chores were far from meaningless. Instead of merely having fun with her friends, the festival built a precious emotional bond linking her to her family and distant cultural roots.
