Cooking is fun, but sometimes accidents may happen. If you burn yourself, cut your finger, or pour out hot oil carelessly, don’t panic! Here are some things you should do when accidents happen.
When you get burned by fire, hot oil, or steam, cool the burn at once under cold running water for 10-15 minutes. Then cover it with a clean cloth or bandage. Don’t use ice or butter! If the burn is serious, you’d better see a doctor at once. Don’t break the blisters (水泡) or touch them often; this can make the pain worse.
If you are cut by knives or sharp (锋利的) tools, wash the cut with clean water and soap. Press a clean cloth on it to stop bleeding. Then cover it with a bandage. If the cut is deep or won’t stop bleeding, go to the hospital. Don’t use alcohol (酒精) directly on deep cuts or touch them with a dirty hand.
If something in the pan catches fire, turn off the stove at once. Cover the pan with a metal lid (锅盖). Without oxygen (氧气), the fire will go out soon. If the fire becomes bigger or spreads to other things, leave the kitchen and call 119 as soon as possible. Do remember, don’t pour water on an oil fire or try to carry a burning pan outside.
To stay away from cooking accidents, we must always be careful when using knives or fire. Most cooking accidents are small if we treat them in the right way. Knowing these tips will help us stay safe in the kitchen!

As summer gives way to autumn, many of us find ourselves lacking (缺少) warmth and sunlight. And the shorter days make some people feel upset (沮丧的) and lazy. They are having the so-called autumn sadness. In worse cases, however, some may suffer from seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.SAD is a type of depression (抑郁症). It mostly starts in the late autumn or early winter and goes away in the spring and summer. People who have SAD oversleep, overeat, and lose interest in activities they once liked. They also feel sad and even desperate (绝望的).
The reason for SAD is not clear. Johns Hopkins University said that the lack of natural light during the autumn and winter months may disrupt (打乱) the body clock and the making of hormones (荷尔蒙). This disruption can lead to depression.
People with SAD often need medical (医疗的) help. Light therapy (光疗法) is a common and useful way to treat (治疗) it. Doctors advise patients (病人) to get as much sunlight as possible. Light therapy helps to balance hormones and get a patient’s life back on track.
Also, living a healthy life, like sleeping early, exercising often, and eating well, can help people deal with SAD.According to the National Institute of Mental Health of the US, in most cases (情况), SAD begins in young adulthood (青年时期). So, while studying inside the classroom, don’t forget to get some sunshine outside the classroom when you can!
DID YOU KNOW
Although most SAD cases appear in autumn and winter, some people get it in spring and summer. People who have summer SAD may find it hard to sleep, not feel like eating, and get annoyed (恼怒的) easily. Kelly Rohan, a professor of psychological science (心理科学) at the University of Vermont, US, advises people with summer SAD to stay in air-conditioned (有空调的) places to help them feel better.

Last winter, I had a terrible experience. I caught a bad cold that lasted for more than two weeks.
It all started on a cold Monday morning. I woke up with a sore throat and a headache. I didn’t think much of it and went to school as usual. But by the afternoon, I started to feel much worse. I had a high fever and my whole body ached. My teacher noticed that I didn’t look well and called my mother.
When my mother came, she took me to the doctor at once. The doctor checked my temperature and said it was 39°C. He listened to my breathing and looked at my throat. “You have the flu,” he said. “You need to rest at home for at least three days.”
During those days, I stayed in bed and took medicine on time. My mother cooked warm soup for me and made sure I drank enough water. I felt very weak and tired, but my mother’s care made me feel better.
My friends also called me to ask about my health. Their warm words made me feel less lonely. After a week, I was well enough to go back to school.
From this experience, I learned a lesson: health is the most important thing. We should take care of ourselves and not ignore small signs of illness.

A few months ago, I had a big argument with my best friend, Lisa. We were both in the school basketball team. During an important game, Lisa missed a shot and we lost the game. I was so angry that I shouted at her in front of everyone. “It’s all your fault!” I said.
Lisa didn’t say anything. She just walked away quietly. For the next few days, she didn’t talk to me at all. I felt upset and regretted what I had said. But I was too proud to say sorry first.
One evening, I received a letter from Lisa. She wrote, “I know you were angry because we lost the game. I was sad too. But what you said really hurt my feelings. I thought we were friends, but friends don’t hurt each other like that.”
After reading her letter, I felt terrible. I realized that winning the game was not as important as our friendship. I called Lisa and apologized for what I had said. “I’m so sorry, Lisa. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Can you forgive me ” I asked.
To my relief, Lisa forgave me. She said, “I miss our friendship too. Let’s forget about that day and move on.”
Now we are still good friends. I learned that we should always control our anger and think twice before we say anything hurtful.

House fires happen somewhere in the world every day. They may hurt people. But you can help! Learn these tips to keep you and your family safe.
Set smoke alarms (报警器). Put a smoke alarm in your house and test it every month. Half of the house fire deaths happen between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. The risk of dying in a house fire is cut in half with working smoke alarms. They make a really loud sound when there’s smoke. Get out of the house when the alarm sounds.
Make escape (逃离) plans. Create a fire escape plan. This is the most important step in preventing fires. Pick a place outside to meet your family members. 77% of families don’t have a house fire escape plan to follow. Fire can spread through a house quickly. You may have as little as two minutes to escape safely. Be ready to act at once.
Don’t hide and go outside! When there’s a fire, the first thing to do is to get out of the house as fast as you can. Touch the door before you go. If the door feels hot, don’t open it. There might be a fire on the other side. Find another way out. Crawl (匍匐前进) on the floor if there is a lot of smoke. It is easier to breathe near the floor.
Get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning house. Go outside where it is safe and stay out once you are out. Don’t call 119 until you are safely outside. Always call 119 as soon as possible when you smell smoke or there is a fire.

Last term, some firefighters came to our school and talked to us about something important: Fire safety!
The firefighters told us all about how fires start and what we can do to stop them. They also told us the most important thing in the middle of a fire was to stay low to the ground and crawl (爬行) to the nearest door. Later they taught us how to use a fire extinguisher (灭火器) and call for help.
At the end of the visit, the firefighters gave us a test to see how much we learnt. Several weeks later, we had a fire drill (消防演习) at school. The alarm (警报) went off, and we had to leave our classroom quickly. At first, I felt a little nervous, but I remembered everything the firefighters taught us. I stayed low to the ground, crawled to the door and got outside. After the drill, our teacher told us that all the safety rules we learnt are there to protect us and that we must take them seriously.
Now, whenever I hear the sound of a fire alarm, instead of being nervous, I feel prepared. To me, fire safety is not just a school lesson for a young student. Instead, it’s a lifelong skill that will always keep me safe.

My name is Lin Na. It doesn’t rain often in my city, but I love rainy days. When I hear the gentle pitter-patter (噼啪声) of raindrops on my windows, I feel peace in my heart. My favorite way to spend a rainy day is to stay home and clean my room while listening to music. The comfortable atmosphere (氛围) makes even housework enjoyable.
Sometimes, when the rain isn’t too heavy, I like to walk in the rain without an umbrella to fully experience the fine rain. A rainy day gives me a good opportunity (机会) to enjoy nature and the quietness. I feel relaxed to walk in the rain. However, my mom always tells me that it’s not good for my health. I know she says that for my good, but sometimes I just let her words go in one ear and out the other. She always gives me a hot cup of tea when I get back home.
In my city, when it rains, many people love to eat dumplings. They call it “Guo Yin Tian”, which means “passing through a rainy day”. I find this enjoyable, even though I’m not sure why they celebrate a rainy day in such a way. Cooking and enjoying dumplings is a good way to spend time, and I have learned to make dumplings, too!

While getting ready for the 2024 Paris Olympics, people saw cupping (拔火罐) marks on an American swimmer Caeleb Dressel. What happened He used this way to help his muscles (肌肉) rest and get strong after hard training.
Cupping is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (中医简称 TCM). Besides cupping, massage (按摩) and acupuncture (针灸) are two other important parts. Massage can make people relaxed. In acupuncture, doctors put needles into people’s hands, faces... The look is funny, but it takes away pain.
TCM is an important part of Chinese culture. The earliest medical book in China, Huangdi’s Classic on Medicine, came out more than 2,000 years ago.
