Unusual Events in Early Modern Olympics
When the first modern Olympics started in Athens in 1896, its future was uncertain. It
went on in 1900 and 1904 but failed to be a top attraction, with some events that would
surprise today’s sports fans.
Chariot (战车) Racing
Dating back to 684 B.C., this event saw drivers race horse-drawn chariots, often with
crashes. Only men could compete as athletes, yet wealthy women could fund chariots—and
as the funder, not the racer, got the victory title, this was the only way for women to "win" at
the Olympics.
Hot Air Balloon Racing
The 1900 Olympics had more athletes and events than the 1896 Games, including hot air
balloon competitions. Drivers were judged by distance traveled, altitude reached and best
balloon-taken photo. This event, however, only appeared once in Olympic history.
Live Pigeon Shooting
Also a one-time event in 1900, this competition had competitors shoot as many released
pigeons as possible. Belgian Leon de Lun won by shooting 21 pigeons, with around 300
pigeons killed in total. Luckily, live pigeon shooting only appeared at the Olympics once.
Painting
From the 1912 Stockholm Olympics to the 1948 London Games, art competitions
(including painting) were held. They were later canceled because most competitors were
professionals, while the Olympics aimed to make amateurs(people who didn’t get paid for
their athletic or artistic talent)shine.
21. How could a woman be involved in Chariot Racing
A. By funding a chariot.
高一英语试题 第 3 页 ( 共 12 页)
B. By competing in the race.
C. By training a chariot driver.
D. By signing up as a volunteer.
22. What do Hot Air Balloon Racing and Live Pigeon Shooting have in common
A. They were warmly welcomed by the audience.
B. They only existed once in history as Olympic events.
C. They required excellent skills in photography.
D. They involved the use of animals as a necessary part.
23. Why were the art competitions removed from the Olympic Games
A . The organizers believed arts were not as important as sports.
B. The quality of the artistic works was far from satisfactory.
C. The costs of organizing them were too high.
D. The competitors were not what the organizers expected.

A famous American poet Robert Frost once said, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation. ”
But XuYuanchong, well-known Chinese translator, had tried to convey the beauty of ancient
Chinese poetry throughout his life. His teacher Qian Zhongshu commented on his poetry
translation, “You are dancing while chained by rhyme and rhythm, but the dance shows
amazing freedom and beauty, which is quite impressive.”
Since 1978, Xu had published more than 100 translated works in Chinese, English and
French, reaching millions of readers at home and abroad. He even translated Chinese poems
into rhymed verses in both English and French. He was also the first Asian winner of the
Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature.
Xu was known to be very fastidious in his work, paying extreme attention to every detail.
For him, English is a “scientific” language that needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic”
language that includes a wider range of content. Following this principle, Xu kept not only
faithfulness in the sense but beauty in his translation.
Through Xu’s translations, time-honored Chinese wisdom has made an impact on
Western societies and the world. For example, when former US president Barack Obama tried
to begin a healthcare project during his presidency, some senators (议员) disagreed at first.
But after reading the poem titled Fishing in Snow translated by Xu, one senator was so
impressed with the fisherman’s independent thinking that he chose to part with the party line
to support Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a routine. Every day he translated
about1, 000 words, working till 3 to 4 a. m., sleeping for about 3 hours and getting up at 6 a.
m. to continue. “Translation is a means of communicating with the writer’s soul. A sudden
flicker of a good word or a good line thrills every pore (毛孔) and every inch of my skin,” Xu

said.

A. He set very high standard for his own work.
B. He believed that translating poetry was impossible.
C. He spent most of his time studying language science.
D. He thought Chinese was easier to translate than English.
26. Why does the author give the example in Paragraph 4
A. To recommend Xu’s translation works.

Cultural festivals are an important part of our global society, showing the rich
traditions, customs, and values that define various communities. They serve as a bridge
between the past and the present, allowing us to maintain a connection but preservation of
these events can be challenging, particularly in the face of globalisation and modernisation.
This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes into play.
AI is being used to streamline the planning and execution of cultural festivals, making
the process simpler and faster. For instance, predictive (预言性的 )analytics, a branch of AI,
can analyze past data to predict visitor turnout, enabling organisers to plan more effectively.
AI can also help in creating personalised experiences for participants. By analysing data
from social media and other sources, AI can provide insights into what participants might
enjoy, allowing for the personalised need of events for different interests.
Furthermore, AI is proving instrumental in preserving cultural festivals for future
generations. High-definition cameras equipped with AI technology are being used to record
festivals in exceptional detail. These digital records can then be stored and accessed easily,
ensuring that the essence of these events is not lost over time. In addition, AI is being used to
create virtual reality experiences of cultural festivals, allowing people who cannot physically
attend to experience them virtually.
AI's role in cultural festivals is not just limited to organisation and preservation. It
is also being used to enrich the artistic aspects of these events. For example, AI is being
used to create music and art installations (装置) that respond to the audience’s movements
and reactions, creating a dynamic and interactive experience.
高一英语试题 第 5 页 ( 共 12 页)
However, the use of AI in cultural festivals is not without its challenges. There are
concerns about the potential loss of human touch, as well as issues related to data privacy.
It is crucial that as we apply the power of AI, we also ensure that it is used responsibly.
28. What does the word underline "streamline" in paragraph 2 most likely mean in the
context
A. To make something longer and more complex.
B. To make a process easier and faster.
C. To follow a tradition without a change.
D. To record something in detail for preservation.
29.Which of the following is used for protecting cultural festivals
A. Art installations.
B. Musical instruments.
C. AI-powered cameras.
D. Virtual reality equipment.
30.What is a concern mentioned about the use of AI in cultural festivals
A. The possible loss of human interaction.
B. The high cost in employing AI technology.
C. The organisers' limited knowledge of AI.
D. The difficulty in gathering data for analysis.
31.What does the passage mainly talk about
A. The challenges of using AI in festivals.
B. The various application ofAI in cultural festivals.
C. The complete replacement of human roles in festivals.
D. The history and development of cultural festivals.

Air flows through every building in which we spend time, including homes, offices,
schools and stores. HVAC (暖通空调) systems keep that air moving, but they also carry
too much carbon dioxide (CO ).
Right now, the biggest efforts to pull out CO of the atmosphere rely on huge
industrial machines that cost a fortune and need a lot of space. Instead of building big
carbon-capture (碳捕捉) plants, what if we could use the air systems already in place in
every building That's the goal of new filters (过滤器 ) developed by researchers at the
University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
If every building used this kind of filter that fits into the air systems, we could
remove up to 596 megatons of CO from the atmosphere per year. That's like taking 130
million cars off the road for a full year. But even on a small scale, the benefits are clear.
In 2024, a study showed that these filters could help cut energy bills by as much as
21.66%.
高一英语试题 第 6 页 ( 共 12 页)
Normally, HVAC systems have to bring in a lot of outside air to keep indoor CO
levels down. People have to heat or cool that air, depending on the season—and that
costs money. “Our filter removes CO inside the building, so the system doesn't have to bring
in much outside air. That means less air needs to be heated or cooled, which reduces the
energy consumption in HVAC," explained Ronghui Wu, who worked on the project.
Unlike standard filters, which ended in the rubbish every six months or so, these new
filters are built for reuse. Instead of heading to landfills(垃圾填埋地), they can be
collected and refreshed. Po-Chun Hsu, lead researcher, sees a future where cities manage
these filters just like they handle garbage and recycling. Used filters could be picked up,
and sent to a central location, where their CO is removed. The captured carbon could then
be turned into fuels or chemicals, adding value instead of waste.
It is a cleaner filter that captures carbon. If this technology catches on, buildings
around the world could become quiet climate helpers.
32.What is the main goal of the new filters according to the researchers
A. Control air flow through every building.
B. Provide inspiration for building big plants.
C. Replace current heating and cooling systems.
D. Turn buildings into carbon-capture machines.
33.Why are cars mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To explore special ways to cut energy bills.
B. To reveal a disadvantage of HVAC systems.
C. To show the benefit the new filters can bring.
D. To stress the harm of CO from the atmosphere.
34.What do Ronghui Wu's words suggest about the new filters
A. They can help save money.
B. They are popular now.
C. They still need more testing.
D. They mainly keep indoor temperature fixed.
35.What’s the best title of this passage
A. Catching Carbon from the Air: An Energy-Saving Filter
B. Turning Buildings into Fuel: The future of Carbon Filters
C. Reducing Your Energy Bill: The HVAC Systems
D. Bringing in Outside Air: The New Type of Air Filter

Leo and Max had been best friends since the start of high school. They shared a deep
love for indie rock and spent months working toward their dream of starting a band together.
Every afternoon after school, they practiced in Leo’s garage—Max was the singer, full of
energy and bold ideas, while Leo played his most treasured possession: a Fender guitar his
grandfather had given him. Their music was raw, sometimes even messy, but it came straight
from the heart. Over time, they had created three original songs, each holding memories of
their growing friendship.
Everything changed when their school announced the “Battle of the Bands” competition.
Max, always eager to stand out, insisted they should cover well-known punk songs to impress
the judges. Leo disagreed. To him, music was not just about winning—it was about
expressing who they were. “We shouldn’t just follow what’s popular,” he said quietly one

day during rehearsal (彩排). But Max, his voice sharp with frustration, replied, “If we don’t
win, no one will ever hear our songs!”
Tension grew until one rainy Tuesday afternoon. Leo walked into the garage and froze:
Max was bent over the guitar, attaching a strange electronic device (设备 ) to it without
asking. “What are you doing ” Leo’s voice trembled. “Trying to make our sound stronger!”
Max shot back. Their argument exploded into shouts, and Max finally stormed out, leaving
the garage in heavy silence.
Alone, Leo picked up his guitar. Near the bridge, he noticed a thin, almost invisible
crack (裂缝). His heart sank. It wasn’t just a crack on the guitar. He also felt a different kind
of crack forming —one in their friendship. With the competition only two days away, they
weren’t speaking, weren’t practicing, and weren’t even looking at each other in the hallway.
Leo wanted to know if their band—and their friendship—could ever be repaired.
