I had a great time with the film Turning Red, which follows Meilin, a thirteen-year-old girl who suddenly begins turning into a giant red panda.
The film was set in 2002 when I would’ve been around Meilin’s age. It was a joy for me to watch a film that I could relate to. The film illustrates the push-pull that many immigrant families face: how much of their culture to keep and how much to assimilate(融入). There are beautiful traces of Chinese culture throughout this film, including gorgeous food, time around the table, relationships with extended family, and more.
In the film, women in Meilin’s family suffer a curse(诅咒). As soon as they begin to blossom into womanhood, they transform into a giant red panda whenever they express any strong emotion. Thus, they have learned that emotional repression is the way to go. It was beautiful to watch this young girl choose the different path of emotional wellness instead of holding back her feelings.
It’s not a surprise that the director Domee Shi, who is around my age, chose this plotline. Many people my age are on that similar path Meilin finds herself on. We honor our parents and what they have done for us, but we’re also choosing to be more emotionally healthy and trying to live differently than we were taught.
The part of Turning Red I particularly loved is the ending. Though Meilin’s mom, grandma, and aunts see that it’s possible to integrate their red pandas into their lives, they don’t choose that path. Instead, they choose to bottle their pandas up once again. However, they do get a new perspective on this young, groundbreaking girl. It’s such a sweet reminder that not everyone can go on the same journey toward emotional health, and that’s okay.
If all of them had embraced their pandas, I think the ending would’ve felt incredibly cheese and taken away some of the power of the story. So we get a conclusion that is satisfying and heart-warming without being too much of a fairy tale.
24. Why did the author enjoy watching Turning Red
A. She found a connection with the story.
B. She followed a life path similar to its director.
C. She adored the appealing design of the red panda.
D. She valued its emphasis on the beautiful Chinese culture.
25. What does the underlined word “repression” in the third paragraph mean
A. Disturbance. B. Control. C. Wellness. D. Expression.
26. What does the author think of the ending of the film
A. Bittersweet. B. Idealized. C. Realistic. D. Cheesy.
27. What is the central dilemma faced by Meilin in Turning Red
A. “Can I embrace my true self ” B. “Should I prioritize my family ”
C. “Can I uncover the curse’s secret ” D. “Should I explore diverse cultures ”
C
On a regular Tuesday morning, a large crowd has gathered outside a grocery store in Xuchang, a city with 4 million people. Visit Pangdonglai at the weekend and things are even busier. Thousands of people, some having travelled hundreds of kilometers away, arrive before dawn to line up. The line winds back and forth in front of the store’s entrance. Nowadays, in China, the fancy shopping centers are often empty, and the economy is struggling. But the success of Pangdonglai’s 13 stores has caught the attention of business managers who want to know what consumers are thinking.
The latest economic data make these long lines even more interesting. In March, retail (零售) spending only grew by 3.1% compared to last year, which is much lower than expected. That same month, listed retail companies cut their expected earnings by an average of 7%. In Shanghai, where people spend three times more per person than in the province where Pangdonglai is located, high-end grocery stores are closing. Pangdonglai’s success can teach us something about how to increase China’s economy and what a revived (复苏的) economy might look like.
It’s easy to see what people are buying. Shoppers rush to fill their carts with common items: fresh fruits and vegetables, pastries, and local treats like Menzi, a steamed tapioca dish. Some quickly grab a lot of a popular cake before it runs out.
Customers have a variety of explanations as to why they have travelled to what appears to be a nice but ordinary store. Many praise the service publicly. Superior produce also helps: unsold fruit and vegetables are thrown away after a day on shelves, shoppers say. Prices are not low but are considered fair. It is reported that many customers are impressed by Pangdonglai’s employment policies. The firm is said to pay more than three times the local average among industry peers and give staff at least 40 days off a year, a very good amount for China. Some may just appreciate the atmosphere. In the very clean aisles (通道), the words “Freedom &Love” are printed in bold lettering.
28. What makes Pangdonglai’s stores stand out
A. Its extremely low prices. B. The large variety of goods.
C. Its success despite the struggling economy. D. The store’s international influence.
29. How does the growth rate of retail spending in March compare to expectations
A. It goes beyond expectations. B. It meets expectations.
C. It is well below expectations. D. There is no clear comparison.
30. Which of the following can be inferred about Pangdonglai’s influence
A. It has only a local influence on the shopping habits of people in Xuchang.
B. It might inspire other retailers to improve their employment conditions.
C. Its success mainly lies in its unique product selection instead of other aspects.
D. It has little to do with the overall economic situation of China.
31. What would be the best title for the passage
A. “Pangdonglai: The Struggles of China’s Retail Economy”.
B. “Pangdonglai: A Success Story in the Retail Industry”.
C. “Pangdonglai: What Shoppers Buy in the Retail Industry”.
D. “Pangdonglai: The Decoration Style of China’s Retail”.
D
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2024 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand company (陪伴) of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone gets a state of satisfaction.
However, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1-2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat, you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
33. What did Lingchong You find in his study
A. How sponges are exactly structured. B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment. D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
34. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive.
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
35. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The varieties of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Researches into usage of bacteria.

W:A big dog celebrates a big birthday this year Clifford the big red dog first appeared 50 years ago, along with Emily Elizabeth, the little girl who loves him to today we have Norman bridwell to talk with NPR's reporter on his dog's 50th birthday. So, Norman, tell us how it all started.
M: Well, it was nineteen sixty two, and I was a struggling, not very successful artist in New York. My wife suggested that I try my hand at painting for children's books. So I did 10 paintings and took them to publisher's. I was turned down everywhere except at one publisher, where a young woman told me I wasn't very good. So if I wanted to paint for a book, I'd need to write one on my own.
W: So you did
M: Um, the woman pointed to a painting I'd done of a little girl with a big red dog, and she said. Maybe that's a story and I went home and over that week end I wrote the story Clifford the big red dog and was shocked when it was accepted for publication because I'd never written anything before.
W: I see. How wonderful
M: Yes, it was. My wife was also in shock when she did realize it wasn't a dream, but it was just luck.
W: But that luck turned into 90 Clifford books that have sold 126 million copies in 13 languages.
17. 18. 19. 20.
M: Hello, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about small talk. That is short conversations people often have with strangers they meet. Such exchanges occur at bus stops, on buses, while waiting in line, almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness. Such conversations usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies, TV shows, local sports or latest news. But you should always keep it in your mind that private questions about salaries, family life, religious beliefs and politics should be avoided during these conversations. Besides, it's better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors, "Do you like our city " they may say simply, "Yes!" On the other hand, if you ask, "What do you think of our city " They will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you are interested in them. If you appear interested in what people are saying, they'd feel more comfortable talking with you.
