Ben was the last player to join the school basketball team. He was shorter and thinner than most of the other players, and nobody believed he could really compete at this level. During the whole first season, he sat on the bench and watched his teammates play match after match. He hardly ever touched the ball in real games. 1________ Most people thought he would soon quit, but Ben chose to stay and work harder.
Every morning, Ben arrived at the court an hour before class. 2________ At night, he watched videos of famous players and took notes on their moves. He also ran five kilometres every day to build up his strength. Sometimes his legs ached and he felt tired, but he never missed a single day of training.
Months passed, and Ben's hard work began to show. 3________ He could run faster, jump higher and shoot more accurately than many of the starters. His dribbling improved too. Still, the coach did not change the team list, and Ben continued to sit on the bench.
Then, during the final tournament, the team's star player hurt his ankle badly in the second quarter. 4________ To everyone's surprise, Ben scored twenty points in the game and helped the team win by five points. The whole school talked about the quiet boy on the bench.
After the match, Ben ran to the coach and thanked him. 5________ 'Great players are made on the bench,' the coach added with a smile. He explained that he had wanted to see whether Ben truly loved the game or only wanted attention.
Now Ben is a starter of the team. He often tells new bench players his story: never stop working, because your chance will come one day when you least expect it.
A. To his surprise, the coach said he had been watching Ben all the time.
B. Little by little, his body changed and his skills improved.

D. The coach looked at Ben and asked him to play.

F. Ben felt so angry that he left the team at once.
G. Ben asked his parents to speak to the coach for him.
五、阅读理解
(一)
Every morning at five o'clock, Amina put on her old running shoes and ran eight kilometres to school. She lived in a small village in Kenya, and there was no bus. Running was not a hobby for her; it was simply the way she got to class.
Her talent was discovered by a PE teacher who visited the village school. 'I noticed she passed my car on the road — on foot,' the teacher laughed. He gave Amina a proper training plan and taught her how to warm up, stretch and recover after long runs. He also lent her a pair of real running shoes, the first pair she had ever owned.
Training was hard. Sometimes her legs ached so much that she could hardly walk, but she never thought of giving up. On rainy days, she ran up and down the stairs at home instead. She kept a small notebook to record her times for every run. Slowly, her times got shorter and her steps became lighter.
At sixteen, Amina entered her first national marathon. Many runners there were richer and better known, and they looked down on the village girl. But Amina stayed calm, kept her own pace and passed runner after runner in the last ten kilometres. She finished first.
Today, Amina is a professional athlete. 'People think my story is about talent,' she says. 'But really, it is about the road to school. I ran it every day for years. That road made me.'

(二)
Many students start exercising with great excitement. They run or play ball games for hours on the first day, but a week later some of them give up because their muscles hurt or they get injured. Sports doctors say most of these problems can be avoided with a few simple habits.
First, always warm up before exercise. Five to ten minutes of easy jogging and stretching raises your heart rate slowly and prepares your muscles for harder work. 'Cold muscles are like cold rubber bands — they break easily,' explains Dr Chen, a sports medicine expert. A good warm-up also helps you move better and enjoy the game more.
Second, increase your training slowly. Beginners often do too much on the first day and then spend the next week recovering on the sofa. Doctors advise increasing your exercise time by no more than ten percent each week. Slow progress is still progress, and it keeps your body safe.
Third, listen to your body. Normal tiredness after exercise disappears after a good rest, but sharp pain in a joint or muscle may mean an injury. If the pain continues for more than two days, stop training and see a doctor. Playing through the pain often makes small injuries much worse.
Finally, keep track of your progress in a notebook or an app. Write down how far you ran or how long you trained. Seeing your improvement week by week will keep you interested and help you exercise safely for years.
6.Why do some students stop exercising after a short time
A. They find exercise too boring.
B. Their doctors ask them to stop.
C. They feel pain or get injured.
D. They have no time for it.
7.Why does Dr Chen compare cold muscles to cold rubber bands
A. They become stronger in the cold.
B. They are easily damaged.
C. They are hard to find.
D. They stretch better when cold.
8.What do doctors advise beginners to do
A. Exercise as long as possible on the first day.
B. Rest for a whole week after the first day.
C. Exercise together with professional athletes.
D. Increase their exercise time by no more than ten percent each week.
9.If sharp pain continues for more than two days, you should ______.
A. keep training as usual
B. do more stretching
C. stop training and see a doctor
D. drink more water
10.What is the passage mainly about
A. How to exercise safely and avoid injuries.
B. Why young people should do sports.
C. How to become a sports doctor.
D. The best sports for students.
