When I was a child, I drew a face. A grown-up corrected me quickly with a circle, round eyes, a seven-shaped nose and a curved mouth. I stood confused, for this cold, mechanical pattern felt nothing like the lively faces I knew in real life.
As I grew up, I kept wondering how to draw a real face. Once, I got a chance to ask people to draw each other following two rules: never lift the pencil, and never look down at the paper. They could only look at their partner. After a minute, the drawings were terrible but wonderful. Why Because they had drawn what they truly saw, not what they thought a face should look like. They also did something rare: they made eye-to-eye, face-to-face contact for almost a full minute without looking away. They slowed down, focused fully, and truly noticed another person. That was the secret to drawing “a real face”.
Later, as an illustrated journalist, I once planned a drawn story about how public libraries served the people. I explored every corner of the library and genuinely connected with the staff. I found with their intentional, public-spirited help, those seemingly ordinary facilities served people in far more meaningful puters that I assumed were for checking out books or emails were actually lifelines for people searching for jobs and housing. The sinks in the public restroom served as a laundromat(洗衣房) and showers for the homeless. The entirely new and rich truth contributed to my series of breathing drawings.
I do not hope everyone becomes an artist, but everyone can learn to see deeply. Slow down, pay attention, and truly observe; you will rediscover love for the world and all people around you. We urgently need this courage-to see each other and ourselves clearly, and to honor the real truth hidden in plain sight.
24. What confused the author in the first paragraph
A. A fixed concept. B. The adult’s criticism.
C. A sharp contrast. D. The unclear drawing rules.
25. Why were the drawings terrible but wonderful in paragraph 2
A. They were messy but detailed. B. They were rough but lively.
C. They appeared ugly but organized. D. They seemed simple but friendly.
26. What do the underlined words “the entirely new and rich truth” refer to in paragraph 3
A. More library service roles. B. Better maintenance of facilities.
C. Greater professional pride. D. Deeper exploration for good stories.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Drawing a Magic. B. Discovering the Art.
C. Seeing the Real Face. D. Creating Fine Works.

On the top floor of a workshop in Athens, Greece, a team of artists are busy creating faithful copies of the famous statue of Alexander the Great and the Venus de Milo.
“Our work mostly ends up at gift shops around the world. Museums also ask us to make copies of artworks. Prices start at $24 for a small Venus statue and go as high as $11,560 for a faithful copy of it.” says Maria Zafeiri, an artist at the workshop for 30 years. “It’s exciting when our statues end up in a museum and thousands of eyes admire them. They bring even more visitors to Greece.”
Making copies of ancient Greek statues isn’t new. Researchers and artists began reproducing ancient Greek sculptures shortly after the National Archaeological Museum in Athens opened in 1829.
“The first copies were not for commercial reasons, but for scientific ones. Scholars wanted to study the ancients.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Later, everyone wanted statues in their house, above the fireplace. They were in all European living rooms.”
Some copies of ancient statues were terrible, but other reproductions were so faithful that they ended up in places like the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In 2018, the museum determined its famous Kouros statue—supposed to date from 650 to 480 BC and bought for $6 million—was probably a forgery (赝品), and removed it from view. “There are methods to fool the experts.” Maria Zafeiri says. “Such forgeries create a false image of Greek culture and mislead researchers.”
But aren’t Maria Zafeiri and her workshop also producing forgeries “I think the difference between a forgery and a reproduction is the intention. There are reproductions of designer bags, but that becomes forgeries when the reproducer says they’re real.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Our shop just feeds the desire of travelers to own something lovely to pack up or ship home. A good reproduction can extend your trip. It’s similar to a photograph of yourself while on vacation, it brings you back to that beautiful day at the Acropolis.”
28. How does Maria Zafeiri most probably feel about her work
A. Ashamed. B. Proud. C. Bored. D. Dissatisfied.
29. Who were the targeted customers of the reproduced ancient Greek statues in the 1830s
A. Researchers. B. Businessmen. C. Souvenir seekers. D. Treasure hunters.
30. What can be inferred about the Kouros statue bought by the Getty Museum
A. The reproduction was worth the money. B. The museum had a lot of such forgeries.
C. It was probably from a skilled artist. D. It was created between 650 and 480 BC.
31. What sets a forgery apart from a reproduction according to Maria Zafeiri
A. The price. B. The material. C. The quality. D. The purpose.

Have you ever disliked a certain music style at first, yet grown to love it after listening many times Many people share this similar experience. Our music tastes are formed from childhood, but they are never fixed — they can be transformed as long as we are willing to keep listening to unfamiliar tunes.
Psychologists from a Canadian university carried out a study about people’s musical acceptance. They put forward the concept of a “music sensitive period”. This sensitive stage exists in kids aged 3 to 5. At this stage, children are far more likely to accept various unknown music genres without resistance. As kids grow older, this sensitive period fades little by little, and they become skeptical of unfamiliar songs or music types.
Even if the music sensitive period fades in early childhood, it can be reactivated later in life. The research data shows that kids who hear a new style of music 6 to 9 times will gradually develop fondness for it. The older people get, the more repeated listens they need to change their musical preferences. Researchers finally drew a conclusion: the music sensitive period never fully disappears permanently.
Repeated listening is the key to reopening one’s music sensitive window. Every time you listen to a strange song, your inner resistance to it will weaken a little bit. Gradually, the feeling of “not bad” will turn into real love for the music. A useful way to keep trying new music is mixing familiar elements into unfamiliar works. For example, adding your favorite singer’s voice into a new band’s songs can make strange music much more attractive. Once you get used to this new style, you won’t need the familiar bonus parts any longer.
To fall in love with a music style you once hated, you need to listen to it in different scenes and different moods. No matter how strange the rhythm or special the melody sounds, human beings are able to develop genuine love for almost all music styles. Never give up trying new music — you may end up finding your all-time favorite genre unexpectedly!
32. What does the Canadian study find about young kids aged 3-5
A. Kids refuse to listen to unfamiliar music naturally.
B. Kids build lifelong love once they hear a song once.
C. Kids easily accept different music when their sensitive period is open.
D. Kids without rich music exposure will have narrow music tastes forever.
33. The underlined word “skeptical” in Paragraph 2 means .
A. uneducated B. bored C. impatient D. doubtful
34. Why does the writer write Paragraph 4
A. To explain how singers improve their voice performance.
B. To prove people have no reason to refuse new music.
C. To remind readers it’s hard to mix different music styles.
D. To show people can widen music tastes with constant efforts.
35. What is the main idea of the whole passage
A. Listening to music repeatedly can change one’s music preference.
B. Adding favorite singers makes strange music easy to enjoy.
C. Strange rhythms stop people from enjoying new music.
D. Early childhood listening decides people’s lifelong music taste.

Ways to Teach Kids Work Ethic Early
Ever watched your child try to get out of doing housework by making excuses If only the effort they put into avoiding responsibility could be redirected into, well, actual responsibility. In fact, building work ethic (道德) in kids doesn’t require military-style drills. Here are four simple and practical ways.
● Make housework part of the family routine.
Involve your child in the daily running of the house: tidying toys, feeding the dog, watering the plants. 36 When the tasks become as routine as brushing teeth, kids internalise that helping with housework is simply part of life.
● 37
You can’t expect your child to tackle their tasks with enthusiasm while you’re complaining about loading the dishwasher. If your child sees you enjoying your work and taking pride in a job well done, they’re far more likely to do the same.
● Build determination through goals.
38 Sometimes you have to help them find their “thing.” Set small, achievable goals together with them and celebrate progress, not perfection. The trick is to let them struggle a bit — resist the urge to help fix things the moment they experience a setback.
● Treat mistakes as opportunities.
Few things strike fear into a child’s heart like the prospect of failing. The best way is to normalise mistakes as a natural part of learning. When kids mess up, don’t jump in with a rescue mission. 39
Teaching kids work ethic is to gently and consistently push them toward responsibility, determination, and pride in their efforts. 40 No worry. Those habits you’re building now are setting your child up for a lifetime of resilience (韧性) and satisfaction.
A. Help kids develop analytical skills.
B. Model the work ethic you want to see.
C. Instead, encourage them to do differently next time.
D. Sometimes, a cleaner living room is the best reward.
E. Progress can be slow, and you’ll wonder if it’s all sinking in.
F. Not every child is born with the willpower of a marathon runner.

During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents’ house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play.” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we’re going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies (用品) for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We’d first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we’ll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: What a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity (慈善) work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground,no parking lot…It was so small; the school I went back to home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.

Dear Rechel,
I can’t wait to share good news with you. A Chinese folk culture theme park has been built in my hometown. I’d like to invite you to visit it with me.
We can meet at the bus station at 8 next Saturday morning and set off. During the visit, we’ll learn about Chinese folk culture and experience various folk-art forms. We can see Chinese history changes and great society development, especially in the countryside.
When visiting, we should behave well and follow the rules. Don’t make noises or throw rubbish. I’m sure you’ll benefit from this visit. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom. I found there were about twenty children. Their clothes were worn out, their school bags were just plastic ones. Immediately I felt sorry for them. The teacher introduced us and told them why we came here. Hearing that, all the children were excited and told us the things they had wanted for long, such as picture books, new pencils and so on. My mom made a list of these things.
Paragraph 2
Holding the shopping list, my mom and I headed for a store. There I helped my mom pick up the things on the list. And I decided to buy something for the children using my own pocket money. My mom praised me for it. Then I added some candies to our supplies. These children were so glad and they thanked us when receiving the gifts. Some of them started reading the picture books and sharing the candies right away. That day, I learned doing something meaningful for others could also be a wonderful thing.

M: Guess what Nora made it to the final of the singing competition. I’ll go and cheer her on this Friday.
W: Count me in. Who else is competing
M: Jack and Dave from Class 9, and Lauren from Class 11. It’s going to be a tough competition.
2.
M: What a perfect day for cycling. I know a beautiful riverside path. Let’s have a fun ride.
W: Well, I have my hands full today. I must review the notes. I’ll have a math test and a history test tomorrow.
3.
M: What should I wear for the outdoor concert
W: We can see a clear blue sky at the moment. However, there’s a chance of rain, and it might begin to blow late in the afternoon.
M: In that case, I’d better wear a jacket and bring a raincoat.
4.
M: Honey, what shall we have for dinner
W: I’m thinking about cooking that fish dish we ate during our trip to Hangzhou.
M: Good idea. Little Amy liked it. Well, how about cooking some vegetables too
5.
M: Oh no, the engine is making a strange noise. What should we do
W: Pull over right now. I’ll call the repair shop.
M: All right. I hope they can come quickly. We can’t be late for the meeting.
6-7
M: Henry, I failed my driving test again. I don’t want to take it for the third time.
W: What Did you forget to wear your seat belt again
W: No, this time I was so nervous that I didn’t pay attention to the traffic lights, and I was speeding.
M: That’s dangerous.
W: Yeah, I guess I’d better keep taking the bus to work.

M: That sounds great. Have you been on any long trip lately
W: Actually, yes. I just returned from a two-week vacation with my mother in Europe. It was wonderful, but I must say the journey was pretty exhausting.
M: Europe sounds amazing. What were some of the highlights of your trip
W: Oh, so many. I loved wandering through the streets in Paris, and the food in Italy was fantastic. But honestly, the experience of visiting Berlin’s museums was the best part.
13-16

W: I focus on describing their back stories and motivations. The process took a lot of time and effort, but it’s not like the tiredness and stress I felt when I wrote before. When I created these characters, I always had new and fun ideas, so I really enjoyed the process of writing this book.
M: Sounds good. Your writing often explores themes of identity and self-discovery. Why are these topics important to you
W: I think they are universal themes because almost everyone meets some difficulties in life. Exploring these themes allows me to connect with readers on a deeper level.
M: That’s true. Finally, do you have any plans to write a new novel
W: Actually, I’m working on a new novel that explores family relationships. It’s a bit different from my previous works, but I’m excited about the challenge.
M: I can’t wait to read it. Thank you for sharing your opinions with us.

W: Heavy snow and freezing rain have brought lots of trouble across the UK. Several major airports were forced to cancel flights, and many key roads in the north of England couldn’t be used. With the weather set to stay stormy on Sunday, there is concern that many country communities could be cut off, with up to forty centimeters of snow on the ground. The National Grid, which manages the country’s electricity network, said it had been working to get power back across the country. The company’s live maps show power cuts in Birmingham in central England, Bristol in the west, and Cardiff in Wales. The road network was also heavily affected on what would have been a very busy day, as many families were returning home from the Christmas and New Year break, and students were heading back to universities. On the railways, many services were cancelled, with National Rail warning of trouble continuing into the working week. Many sporting events have already been put off, but the football match between Liverpool and Manchester United is still on, though there will be another inspection later.
