What makes an art form last for over 600 years Kunqu Opera, one of China’s oldest and most beautiful traditional operas, has done just that. However, like many traditional Chinese art forms, Kunqu Opera once faced challenges. Modern culture, like pop music and movies, took the center stage, and fewer young people were interested in Kunqu Opera.
But things are changing now. With schools teaching traditional art and performers using social media, a new generation (一代人) has started discovering the beauty of Kunqu through online videos and live shows.
Fang Qian is one of these young fans. “Kunqu Opera is like a seed that grows as I learn more about it,” she says. “The more I study it, the more I discover about other parts of Chinese culture, like literature, calligraphy, music, and painting. This helps me understand my cultural roots gradually.”
Fu Jin, a professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts (中国戏曲学院), explains why Kunqu Opera is so special. “Among all Chinese operas, Kunqu Opera is one of the most beautiful and well-known,” he says. “It shows many parts of traditional Chinese culture, such as ways of thinking, social values, and lifestyles.” What cheers Professor Fu is that more young people are now falling in love with Kunqu Opera. 六、任务型阅读
The topic of China’s “slash youths” (斜杠青年) has been hot on social media for some time, drawing attention to the different pursuits (追求) of the young people nowadays.
The “slash youths” means those who have more than one personal identity (身份). They like to show or describe themselves with different identities, such as a nurse and a model, a teacher and an excellent singer, or an engineer and a band player. Li Lan is one of them. She mainly works as a tour guide, and she is also known as a great designer who created many great book covers. She gives up her comfortable life because she wants to pursue more meaningful achievements.
A different job can make them develop new experiences and talents. What’s more, they can get accepted by others, and they can have a sense of satisfaction.
A study on “slash youths” in the China Youth Study magazine talks about the background of this phenomenon (现象). From the point of social development, changeable job markets have appeared because the modern society’s usual organization is partly broken. As for young people themselves, when they try to rediscover the meaning of work, they face the difficulty of self-development, like feeling powerless, worthless in the job, and so on.
Clearly, the appearance of the slash life leads to some changes. “The slash life shows that our society is changing for the better in some ways, and it welcomes everyone’s self-development, ” said Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to depend on work and money for their sense of self-development. They would like to create their own identities.” The researcher added that because people have different interests and are willing to pay for these interests nowadays, the slash life of the youth would drive the growth of a new economy (经济) and its development.
72.What is the “slash youths”
