Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》) used to be the king of encyclopaedias. It hopes to become the most important encyclopaedia again. An encyclopaedia has information about many different things. It includes articles on topics like animals and science, and many people were willing to buy them. They thought Britannica was the best encyclopaedia.
Several years ago, the company stopped publishing the books. It put the whole encyclopaedia on the internet. However, Britannica online is not as popular as some other online encyclopaedias. About half of Britannica’s articles are free while almost all of the articles on other online encyclopaedias are free. However, the president of Britannica has a plan. He wants to offer all of the encyclopaedia online for free. The company hopes more people will read it.
Britannica began in Scotland nearly 250 years ago. It moved to Chicago in 1929. In 1990, the company sold more than 100,000 sets of books. It was Britannica’s best year. C.To make money for the company.
D.To help other companies earn money.
Technology can be a great way to learn. Apps, games, and websites make learning fun, which provides us with different methods to use when we study new things. But it’s easy to spend too much time looking at screens. So, it’s important for students of all ages to know how to use technology in a right way.
Our brain works differently when we read on a screen compared to reading a book. Screens have things that can take our attention away. Reading a book helps us understand better and remember things more easily. Writing by hand is also better for our brain than typing (打字). When we write, we think more about what we’re writing, which is harder than just typing.
Spending too much time on screens can be bad for kids. It can make it harder to focus (集中), do well in school, sleep, and exercise. In addition, too much time with technology can also make it harder for kids to make friends in real life, which can make them feel lonely.
It’s not always clear if technology helps us learn better. Technology can be great for learning, but it can also be dangerous. Parents and teachers can’t stop kids from using technology, but they can help them know when and how to use it the right way. The important thing is that we use it for ourselves instead of being controlled by it.
11.What does the writer think of apps and websites
A.They are simple. B.They are necessary.
C.They are useless. D.They are interesting.
12.Why does the writer think writing is better than typing

D.Technology will become a great danger for kids in the future.
14.What does the underlined word “them” refer to in the passage
A.Kids. B.Teachers. C.Parents. D.Friends.
15.What is the main idea of this passage

When we talk on WeChat or QQ, sending words can be a little boring. Many people like to use memes (表情包) to make the conversation more fun. But sometimes memes can cause trouble.
Recently, 10 students lost their chance to study at Harvard University. That’s because they used bad memes in a private (私密的) Facebook group chat. The memes were about killing people and joked about the deaths of children, the BBC reported.
At first, this kind of group chat was for the students to get to know each other before going to the university. But later, some students began to set up another group chat and used many bad memes in it.
When Harvard University found out about the chat, it took back the offers (录取通知书) from the students.
Many people agree with the decision (决定). They believe that the students’ actions show their real character (性格). Students shouldn’t treat death as a joke.
But some are against it. They think this is about the private lives of the students. So they have the right to use whatever memes they want.

Many kids have difficulty keeping quiet or talking in a real way when they have video chats with their families who live far away. They might not enjoy having video chats. But now, there’s an app and it can help a lot.
Many family members don’t live in the same place. Chatm is a new app for these family members to stay in touch. Through Chatm, users can join the storytelling activity. “In order to make our kids have the talks with the family members, we need to make the talk interesting,” Dawson, the CEO of Chatm, said.
The Chatm app lets you choose a story and then it gives you advice and adds special effects to make the story exciting. Once you’ve recorded the story you read, you can send it to your little family member.
One user, Mike, used Chatm when he was away for work. He turned himself into a fun frog to get his five-year-old daughter’s attention on the phone. Now his daughter likes reading stories with him every night.
Chatm is a useful tool and any grandparent can learn to use it easily and quickly. “They usually know a little about technology,” said Dawson. “But many grandparents are using Chatm to have a talk with their grandchildren.”

One of my favourite inventions in recent years is face unlocking. It’s like magic—you just look at your phone and it opens without any numbers. Now, there’s a new idea called “passkeys” that might replace passwords!
Passkeys are like a digital wallet on your phone. They can hold all your cards for different apps and websites. When you want to get into a website, you’ll just have to tap a button on your phone and your passkey wallet will let you in without any worry.
How does it keep your wallet safe By using the same “biometrics (生物识别技术)” to check your phone uses—a face scan (扫描) or a fingerprint (指纹) that cannot easily be forged.
Passkeys are not just about making things easier, but they might also be safer than typing passwords. They use something called “public key” cryptography (密码学), which is a way computers talk to each other safely on the Internet. It’s like using a key instead of a password.
With passwords, websites have to keep a list of everyone’s passwords to check when you log in. But with passkeys, when you make a new account, the website makes a special lock and key. The website will keep the lock, _________________.
I think passkeys are a smart idea that will make our online life safer. So, next time you’re complaining that you can’t remember your password, don’t worry too much. It won’t always be like this!
24.The writer explains how the passkeys work by ________.
A.giving a definition B.listing numbers
C.raising questions D.comparing similar things
25.The underlined word “forged” in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A.copied B.printed C.cancelled D.recorded
26.Which of the following can be put in “________”
A.but your phone is safer
B.so you won’t forget the key
C.or it will remember the key
D.and only your phone will have the key
27.The passage is written to ________.
A.describe digital lives B.introduce science development
C.show passkeys are safer than passwords D.report the invention of face unlocking
Do you know that before-2011, people in China had to stand in long lines at train stations to buy tickets Sometimes, tickets would be sold out (售完) while people were still waiting. But now, people can easily book tickets on their phones and take the train using just their ID cards. What brought about these changes And who played an important role in them Let’s read on and find out!
As the world’s largest real-time ticketing platform (平台), 12306 serves over 700 million users and handles (处理) more than 1 billion daily visits at the busiest time. The “super brain” behind this platform is Shan Xinghua, the chief researcher at China Academy of Railway Sciences Corporation.
Shan began her career in 1996 when she joined a new team with the task of creating a national ticketing system. Over the years, she has led the system through several key milestones (重要事件).
When the system was first launched (上线) in 2011, it faced its biggest challenge during the 2012 Spring Festival travel rush (春运). It broke down several times because of the heavy visits. Faced with this challenge, Shan told her team, “We must find a way, no matter how difficult it is.” Working around the clock, they finally improved the system, allowing it to handle over 1.4 billion daily visits and doubling its daily ticket sales capacity (能力).
In 2017, Shan Xinghua and her team started the e-ticket reform (改革) in Hainan. Passengers could enter the station through facial scanning (面部扫描). Shan found the slow speed was the biggest problem with the facial recognition (识别) system. Then Shan and her team spent several months developing a new facial recognition system. With it, passengers can pass through the ticket gate in about 1.5 seconds.
Shan said, “Technology should serve society and improve people's lives.” To make travel more convenient,Shan and her team always listen to passengers’ needs. They hope to improve their services and make more people satisfied.

DeepSeek is famous around the world. It is a popular AI app in China. More and more teenagers like to use it. A middle school student is asking it several questions. Let’s see how it works.
Can you tell me how you “learn” things Sure! Here’s a simple answer. Think of me as a very smart student! I learn like solving a puzzle! I don’t use feelings to understand something like people do. I only use math to guess how things are connected. Got it What’s the coolest thing AI can do Great question! AI can do many things—here are a few of the coolest: Draw anything—Tell AI “a dragon eating pizza,” and it makes the picture. Make songs—Say “a sad song about rabbit,” and it writes and sings it Tell stories—Ask for “a story about a clever rabbit,” and it writes one. It can also talk like a person, help with homework, and even guess the weather better than experts! AI is like a smart helper that learns very fast. What do YOU think is the coolest Should I trust everything you say Great question again! The answer is: Not always! I repeat what I’ve learned from data (数据), which might be wrong. If my data says “The sun is green,” I’ll say it too. Double-check important facts ( like homework)! I’m a tool to help you think, not a perfect teacher. Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence (AI) these days. Have you ever dreamed of using AI to help with your studies
Well, don’t just dream about it. The “AI-powered study rooms” that are popping up all over the country promise to do just that.
Once you sign up, you’ll get a tablet (平板电脑) with “AI apps”. These apps will “create personalised study plans” and “tailor exercises based on your progress” to help you learn more effectively. These study rooms also claim (声称) that their services are more affordable (价格合理的) than traditional tutors (家教). The tablet, along with the first month of tutoring, usually costs 5,000 yuan. After that, it’s about 2,000 yuan per month.
Don’t these promises sound tempting But hold your horses! You’d better finish reading this article before asking your parents to pay the money.
Many parents who have signed their children up for these “AI-powered study rooms” are far from impressed. The “AI apps” don’t live up to their promises. They just spot mistakes and offer repetitive exercises. On top of that, students basically follow pre-recorded lessons. “These so-called ‘AI-powered study rooms’ are more of a scam than a real display of new technologies,” some parents complain.
Don’t feel discouraged, though. Your dream of learning with AI is still alive. There is just no need for you to spend a fortune on a paid “study room” to jump on the AI bandwagon.
From Moonshot AI to DeepSeek, many companies offer their AI chatbots for free. You can use them to help with your studies right at home. The key is to learn how to use them wisely. Asking AI to do all the exercises in the school assignments for you simply isn’t the way to go! Instead, you could ask for clearer and more detailed explanations if you’re confused about something in class. You could also share some English sentences or compositions with an AI chatbot and ask it to point out any mistakes. It could even give you some exercises to help you improve. It will take some time and practice to become a smart AI user, but that effort will serve you better than just sitting in an “AI-powered study room”.

The Internet is a great place for us to talk freely, but it’s also a place where our language skills are getting worse. A recent survey by China Youth Daily found that over 76% of young people in China feel their Chinese language skills are worse than before. They don’t use rhetorical techniques (修辞手法) as often anymore.
People think this is because Internet emojis (表情符号) have changed the habits of how young people talk to each other. For example, when someone sees something hilarious online, they might just write “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji. A teacher from Fuzhou tells the news that people are using fewer words nowadays. For example, young people hardly describe photos with words. They can just share them with others with an emoji to show their feelings.
Also, “copy and paste” (复制粘贴) culture is getting popular. People often use words they find online without thinking much about it. Many start using the same words and sentences, such as “...yyds” (which means “...is/are the best”).
Experts are worried about this situation (情况). First, if this keeps happening, it could change our way of thinking. Second, when we use words without thinking, we will become too lazy to show our real feelings. Last, if teenagers keep using emojis, they might not be able to use words well anymore.
To get better at language, experts say we should try to think on our own and create our own way of talking. They also say we should read more books and stories. Professor Shen from Fudan University says, “Keep using different words to show your special feelings.”

These days, people love to share their lives online — good food, nice clothes, wonderful vacations and so on. Now, showing the number of steps they walk every day is becoming popular, too. _______
People are finding it important to be in good health. To keep healthy, many people go to work on foot. Before walking, they open the step counter app on their phones. The app records (记录) how many steps they walk that day. After a day’s walk, some people share the number on WeChat or Weibo!
This step counter app helps many people learn from each other and keep exercising. Here are two examples about how it’s helpful. “This helps me to exercise more and keep a good habit,” Miss Liu said, “I can also talk about how to keep healthy with my friends on WeChat. We’re in the same group to encourage each other to keep exercising.” Mr. Wu likes to exercise. But in the past, he was kind of lazy. “After I use the step counter app, everything is different. It’s great to exercise with my friends. Sometimes there are prizes for those who walk more steps. I really like it,” he said.
Walking is a relaxing and useful way to exercise. Both the old and the young like it. Recording steps helps people build a good habit. Sharing the number makes walking more fun. But don’t take the number too seriously.

Digital tools are changing the way we learn about culture, especially through virtual (虚拟的) tours. A good example is Elham, a young boy from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He first learned about Peking Opera through short videos and learning websites, since there were no local teachers teaching Peking Opera where he lived.
Although online videos helped him get started, Elham found that some skills are hard to learn only through a screen. For example, the small hand movements and the special singing techniques often require a real teacher to show you how. This tells us that the best way to learn may be to combine online and offline study.
Not long ago, there was a special online show about intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Through live streams and fun activities, people all over China could see different kinds of cultural treasures- like the beautiful coloured enamels from Beijing and folk dances from Tianjin- without leaving home.
Putting culture online not only helps protect it, but also sparks people’s interest in visiting the actual places. Virtual tours and online classes are like a “try before you go”—they get people interested and may lead to real trips later.
As technology keeps improving, the mix of online learning and real-world experiences will help more people around the world understand and enjoy cultural traditions.

Technology That Helps People Live Independently
Assistive technology includes products and services that help people with disabilities communicate, move, study or work. Some tools are simple, such as a walking stick with a special handle. Others use digital technology. A screen reader changes written words into speech, while a camera can recognise objects and read signs aloud.
These tools do not remove every difficulty. They may be expensive, and users sometimes need training. However, good design can give people more choices. For example, a person with limited movement may use a voice assistant to send messages, control lights and search for information. The person can complete tasks without asking another adult each time.
Experts say that users should be involved when new tools are designed. Their experience helps engineers understand real needs. Technology is most useful when it is safe, reliable and easy to use. (assistive technology 辅助技术; screen reader 屏幕阅读器)

Many people are welcoming artificial intelligence (AI). They use AI such as ChatGPT and Deepseek to produce text quickly. Some people find that helpful for school or work. Other AI tools like Doubao create images and even are able to talk with people. But AI isn’t always right. And it brings risks, especially if it is used incorrectly. We asked some students whether they think AI is good for society or not. They made strong points on both sides of the problem. Here are three of their answers. Which one do you agree with
Rime Lee, 13, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
I believe AI can help in many areas. These include healthcare, education, robotics, and more. Some people might think students could use AI to get answers without thinking. But AI doesn’t just give students the answers directly. It can help them solve problems step by step. That’s a great way to learn.
Maren Altrup, 12. Springfield, Missouri
AI can be good for society in some ways, but it could also go wrong. With AI, it can be hard to know what is real and what is made-up. And students could cheat on their homework. This would not be good, because teachers will not know if students understand. Students could stop thinking for themselves and depend too much on AI.
Thomas McGibbon, 14, Pelham, New York
Artificial intelligence is good for society. Without it, some helpful websites wouldn’t exist. It’s also good because you might have a question but your parents don’t know the answer. Then you can ask AI. I know students can use artificial intelligence to cheat on tests or on their homework. But a lot of schools are able to block those websites so that students can’t cheat.

Smartphones, social media, and apps are everywhere. They help us connect with others and learn new things. But when we overuse them, problems come up. That’s why we need digital life balance.
Digital life balance means enjoying games or videos while still having time for real life— like playing outside, talking to family, or enjoying hobbies. It’s not about giving up technology. It’s about using it wisely.
Without digital balance, too much screen time can make real problems. For example, you might feel tired or lonely from being online all day. Instead of making life easier, technology becomes a burden (负担) when unbalanced.
Finding balance is simple. First, control screen time. For example, don’t use phones during meals or before bed. This helps you enjoy real-life moments more. Second, pay attention to your choices. Think before picking up your phone. Ask yourself, “Do I really need to check it now ” Simple things like taking deep breaths before reaching for your phone can help you stay calm and make better choices. Third, use some helpful apps. Try apps like Forest— it plants real trees when you don’t touch your phone.
Balancing digital life makes you happier. You’ll feel calmer and closer to the people around you. Your focus improves— homework gets done faster. In short, you can enjoy both technology and real life.
68.Which ways can be used to achieve digital life balance
①Set phone-free time. ②Think before checking the phone.

How much do you know about AI engineers They are like modern-day magicians who create smart computer programs (程序). Today the world is filled with modern technology, and their importance is growing fast.
▲ First, they write code (代码). Code is like a special language. It allows humans to communicate with computers. AI engineers use popular programming languages such as Python and Java to tell the computer what to do. For example, they create programs to help doctors find diseases (疾病). They also create systems to allow cars to drive autonomously, making traffic safer and more comfortable. What’s more, AI engineers teach computers to “learn” from information like pictures, words, and numbers, just like students learn from books. This learning ability helps computers make predictions and decisions.
To become an AI engineer, some skills and knowledge are needed. You need to study maths, science, and computer science. Also, it’s very important to have good communication skills. AI engineers usually work in groups, and they have to tell their ideas clearly to people who work in different fields. You should also have good problem-solving skills. Sometimes, the programs don’t work well, and AI engineers need to find and solve the problems.
The future of AI engineers looks bright. As AI has great importance in modern life, the need for AI engineers grows. They help with smart homes and businesses. If you are interested in computers and want to create something new, becoming an AI engineer might be a great choice for you.

From April to May 2025, Professor Michael Robb helped lead the survey by Common Sense Media. More than 1,000 teens took part in the survey. Thirty-one percent said talking with AI was “as cheerful as or more cheerful” than talking with real people. Half of the teens said they didn’t trust AI advice. One-third said they talked about serious problems with AI instead of real people.
Professor Robb said these findings worry parents and teachers. “If teens develop social skills with AI, they receive approval all the time and face no challenges. They never learn to read social cues (信号) or understand other opinions. This may make them unprepared for the real world,” he said.
Common Sense Media looked at several popular AI apps. They found that the apps may give dangerous advice and suggest harmful ideas. The group suggests that teens not use AI apps.
Eva Telzer, another professor has found in her research that many teens said they used AI to write emails or messages in difficult situations. “They no longer have trust in themselves to make a decision,” said Telzer. “They need AI to tell them if an idea is good or not.”
Seventeen-year-old Bruce Perry said he had some similar experiences. “If you tell me to plan an article, I would think of going to ChatGPT before getting out a pencil,” Bruce said. He uses AI every day. He asks AI for advice in social situations, deciding what to wear and writing emails to teachers. He says AI expresses his thoughts faster than he can. However, he’s glad that AI apps were not around when he was younger. “I can imagine a kid. He grows up with AI and seldom goes to the park or tries to make a friend,” he said.
While AI makes our lives easier, it may also cause troubles: relying too much on the virtual world can weaken our real-life relationships, and even make us confused about who we are. Using technology wisely, keeping in touch with others and knowing ourselves well, so that we can avoid getting lost.
79.What is probably the purpose of the survey by Common Sense Media

B.They may fail to understand people’s opinions.
C.They may receive dangerous advice or harmful ideas.
D.They may find AI worse than humans at writing articles.
Recently, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese business in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The new AI came out on Jan 20. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became the top free app in Apple’s App Store.
The developers said that DeepSeek-R1 is as good at difficult tasks as other big models but needs less computing power (算力). It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only about 5.57 million US dollars (40.58 million yuan) to develop, while US businesses have had to spend much more money building similar AI models.
DeepSeek-R1’s success largely came from its special training method. Traditionally, AI is trained in two ways. One is Chain-of-Thought (CoT). In this way, AI learns to break problems into smaller and simpler steps. The other is Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT). It works by showing AI lots of problems together with the right answers for it to find a pattern (模式). DeepSeek-R1, however, used Reinforcement Learning (RL) as the key method. In RL, AI learns by trying different things. It gets rewards for correct actions and gets punished for mistakes. For example, in a game, it gets points for picking up rubbish and loses points for breaking a glass. Over time, it works out the best solution (解决方法) all by itself.
In short, DeepSeek-R1 is great. This model shows that China is getting better at AI. DeepSeek-R1 tells us that new ideas can make AI grow, and it will help many parts of our life.

Some people say they are unhappy about technology because it takes up too much of their time. This isn’t true for me. Let me tell you why.
I’m the youngest in the family. My brothers are away at college. I often feel lonely (孤独的) without them at home. Thanks to technology, I’m able to see and talk to them by using video calls. Sometimes, I even chat with their friends if they happen to be around.
My brothers and I are also friends on the Internet. I can see what their colleges look like and what they’re doing in their free time. I learn much more about my brothers. One of them is good at taking photos, while the other just loves to be taken.
With technology, I can communicate with my brothers anytime I want. They made a chat group just for the three of us. I often send messages to them, and they’ll answer whenever they are available. I often share my problems with them, and they often give me some advice. They also tell me that I should always write in good English, or they won’t reply to my messages. I have been writing so much that even my teachers notice that my writing has improved.
In a word, I don’t think that technology has anything wrong. For my brothers and me, technology has brought us closer. Now we communicate much more every day. We can also share what is happening in our lives better.
