English letters do not always have one sound. The letter u is a good example.
In words like cup, bus and lunch, u sounds like / /. Your mouth is open and your tongue is low. In words like blue, rule and June, u sounds like /u /, and your mouth is round. In words like music, cute and student, u sounds like /ju /.
Here is a useful way to remember. When u comes after l, r or j, it often sounds like /u /, for example in ruler and June. When u is in an open syllable, it often sounds like /ju /, for example in music and cute.
Stress is important, too. In a sentence we stress content words like nouns, verbs and adjectives. Small words such as articles and prepositions are usually weak. When you read aloud, listen to the music of the language.
