五、阅读理解
(一)
Dr Chen Xiulan has worked as the only doctor in a small town deep in the mountains for thirty years. When she first arrived after graduating from a medical college, the town had no proper hospital, and many villagers had never seen a doctor. At that time, an infectious disease was spreading quickly, and some families were thinking of leaving their homes. Chen refused to go back to the city. Instead, she visited every house, taught people how to stop the disease from spreading, and cared for the sick day and night. Within three months, the disease was under control, and not one more life was lost.
Over the years, Chen has treated thousands of patients, often without asking for much money. She once sold her own apartment to buy medical equipment for the town clinic. Even when she was ill herself, she still got up in the night to see patients. Her students often ask her why she stays in such a hard place. She smiles and says that the trust in the villagers' eyes is the best reward she has ever received.
In 2021, Chen was given a national honour for her devotion. Newspapers call her 'the guardian angel of the mountains', but she does not think of herself as a hero. 'I am just a doctor,' she says. When people talk about superheroes, many think of the actor Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in the famous films of the late 1970s and 1980s. Tall and strong, Reeve seemed born to play the role, and the films made him a star around the world.
However, in May 1995, Reeve's life changed completely. During a horse-riding competition, he was thrown from his horse and badly injured his spine. Doctors told him that he would never stand or walk again and that he would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, breathing with the help of a machine.
Many people expected Reeve to give up, but he refused. With the support of his family, he learned to live in his new situation. Slowly, he even regained a little movement in his fingers, which surprised his doctors. He returned to work: he directed films, wrote a best-selling book about his experiences, and even acted again. More importantly, he used his fame to help others. He started a foundation to raise money for research into spinal cord injuries and spoke openly about the hopes of disabled people.
Reeve once said that a hero is an ordinary person who finds the strength to keep going when everything seems hopeless. He fought for that belief until he died in 2004. Today, people remember him not only as Superman on the screen but also as a real hero in real life.
