When I was ten years old, my parents took me to an art gallery for the first time. The rooms were quiet and bright, with paintings of different styles hanging on the white walls. 1________ I stood in front of it for a long time, unable to move. From that day on, I dreamed of becoming an artist.
At first, I simply copied pictures from books. My drawings were far from perfect — the lines were shaky and the colours were often wrong — but my art teacher at school never laughed at me. 2________ "Don't rush," she said. "Learning to paint is like learning a language. You must begin with simple words."
So I started with the basics. Every weekend, I carried a small drawing board to the park near my home. 3________ Sometimes I drew the old men playing chess under the trees, and sometimes the children running along the lake. Little by little, my lines became smoother and more confident.
Two years later, my teacher entered one of my paintings in a competition for young artists. To my surprise, it won third prize among more than two hundred works. 4________ My parents were proud of me, but my teacher reminded me that one prize was only the beginning of a long journey.
Now, whenever I pick up my brush, I remember that exciting journey. Painting has taught me to observe the world patiently and to express my feelings through colours and lines. 5________

五、阅读理解
(一)
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. By his early twenties, he was known as a brilliant pianist and composer. However, around the age of 28, he began to notice that his hearing was failing. For a musician, this was the worst possible news. In a letter to his brothers, he wrote about the pain of being unable to say, "Speak louder, I am deaf."
At first, Beethoven hid his problem. He stopped giving public performances and withdrew from society. Yet he refused to give up music. He said he would "seize fate by the throat". Using a special rod attached to his piano, he could feel the vibrations of the notes through his teeth, which helped him sense the music he could no longer hear.
His greatest works came after he had lost almost all his hearing. The Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824, was written when he was completely deaf. At its first performance in Vienna, Beethoven stood on the stage beside the conductor. When the music ended, the audience burst into warm applause, but Beethoven, still facing the orchestra, heard nothing. It was not until a singer gently turned him around that he saw the crowd cheering and waving. Many people in the hall cried at the sight.
Beethoven died in 1827, but his music lives on. His story tells us that true genius is not simply talent — it is the courage to continue when everything seems to be against us.

(二)
Beijing Opera, one of China's most treasured art forms, has a history of more than two hundred years. It combines singing, speech, acting and martial arts into a single performance on the stage. The actors' colourful costumes and painted faces immediately catch the audience's eye. Each colour carries a meaning: red stands for loyalty, black for honesty, while white often suggests that a character is cunning.
The art form reached new heights thanks to Mei Lanfang, one of the greatest performers of the twentieth century. Mei was famous for playing female roles, because in his time women were not allowed to perform on stage. He spent years observing the movements and voices of women around him so that his performances would be true to life. His acting was so vivid that people said he brought his characters alive.
Mei was also a cultural bridge between China and the world. In 1930, he toured the United States and performed in cities including New York. Many American audiences, though they could not understand a single Chinese word, were deeply moved by the beauty of the movements, the music and the costumes. In 1935, he took Beijing Opera to the Soviet Union, where his performances were also warmly welcomed.
Today, Beijing Opera faces challenges from modern entertainment, but people are working hard to keep this art alive. It is now taught in some schools, and young performers are being trained in special academies. As long as there are people who love it, this colourful art will continue to shine on stages around the world.
