Many people dream of success, yet few stop to consider what success actually requires. Researchers who study high achievers have found that natural talent explains very little. 1________ In other words, what separates doers from dreamers is not luck or genius but a working method that anyone can learn.
The first rule of the method is to set goals that can be checked. 2________ 'I want to read more' is a wish, while 'I will read twenty pages every evening' is a goal, because at the end of the week you can count the pages and know whether you have kept your promise to yourself. A clear, checkable goal also makes it much easier to ask teachers or friends for help along the way.
At the same time, be careful how you describe your dream. 3________ A useful goal is like a ladder: high enough to make you grow, but with each step low enough for you to climb. If you cannot picture the next step, your goal is not a plan but a daydream.
Even a well-set goal will fail without daily action. 4________ Writing one page a day sounds small, but by the end of a year it becomes a book. Great achievements are usually the sum of ordinary efforts repeated patiently, day after day. Ask any long-distance runner: the race is won step by step, not in one jump.
Finally, do not hide your plan in your head. 5________ A note on your desk or a reminder on your phone keeps the goal alive on the days when you feel tired. Success, after all, belongs to those who never forget what they are aiming at.
A. A goal that is too vague, such as 'I want to be famous,' gives you nothing to work towards.
B. So write your goals down and keep them where you can see them every day.
C. What these achievers do have is a clear goal and the daily effort to reach it.
D. That is why large goals should be broken into small, daily steps.
E. Failure, in fact, is often the price we pay for valuable experience.
F. The key is to make your goal specific and measurable.
G. Sharing your goals with a trusted friend can also help you stay honest.
五、阅读理解
(一)
When people talk about success, they often picture famous entrepreneurs or star athletes. Few of them would think of a shoe repairman like Mr. Zhao, who has worked at the corner of our street for twenty years.
Mr. Zhao lost his right leg in an accident when he was young. Instead of waiting for help, he learned shoe repair from an old craftsman and opened a stall no bigger than a bed. At first, customers walked past without a second glance, and some days he earned almost nothing. But he refused to give up. He practised every evening after work, studied new styles in old magazines, and treated every pair of shoes as if it were his own.
Slowly, word spread. People began to come from other districts because, as one customer put it, 'He never does a careless job.' Today his little stall is famous online, and on weekends young people even queue up outside it.
Some friends advise him to borrow money, open a big shop and make a fortune. He always shakes his head: 'I fix shoes, not dreams of getting rich. This stall is just the right size for my life.' Mr. Zhao may never appear on television, but in my eyes he is truly successful. He set a modest goal, worked at it with all his heart, and found satisfaction in honest work. Perhaps that is the real secret of success: to do ordinary things extraordinarily well.

(二)
Can money buy happiness Ask ten people and you may get ten different answers. A recent study followed thousands of people for ten years and found something interesting: up to a certain point, more money did make people happier, because it covered basic needs such as food, housing and medical care. Beyond that point, however, the effect grew surprisingly small.
Researchers explain that human beings quickly get used to a higher income. A new car brings excitement for a few weeks, but soon it becomes just a tool for daily life. Meanwhile, people who spend money on experiences, such as a trip with friends or a class they enjoy, report longer-lasting satisfaction than those who buy more possessions.
The study also found that how people use money matters more than how much they have. Those who regularly used their money to help others, even in small ways, felt happier and more satisfied with their lives. Giving, it seems, feeds a deep human need to connect with other people.
None of this means that wealth is a bad thing. Money earned honestly through hard work deserves respect, and financial security reduces real stress. The problem appears when money becomes the only measure of success. As the professor who led the study put it, 'Money is a good servant but a poor master.' Use money to serve your goals, and it adds to your happiness; chase it for its own sake, and it may quietly steal the very joy you are chasing.
6.What did the study find when people’s income was below a certain point
A. Extra money made no difference to happiness.
B. More money clearly raised happiness by meeting basic needs.
C. Money caused stress about housing and medical care.
D. Poor people lived happier lives than rich people.
7.Why does a new car soon stop bringing people joy
A. The car costs too much to keep.
B. People quickly find better cars to buy.
C. People quickly get used to what they own.
D. People care more about public transport.
8.According to the study, which group of people felt happiest
A. Those who bought the newest possessions.
B. Those who earned the highest income.
C. Those who saved money for the future.
D. Those who regularly used money to help others.
9.What is the author’s attitude towards wealth
A. Wealth earned through honest work deserves respect.
B. Wealth is the main cause of modern stress.
C. Wealth always brings real security.
D. Wealth should be avoided at all costs.
10.What does the professor mean by saying “Money is a good servant but a poor master”
A. Money is useful only to servants.
B. Rich people are hard to get along with.
C. Money decides whether we are happy.
D. Money should serve your goals instead of ruling your life.
