What is the purpose of education For a long time, many people have believed that it simply means passing examinations and getting good grades. Schools are often judged by their test results, and students are praised mainly for their marks. 1________ In fact, a good education should help us become curious, independent thinkers who can deal with a changing world, not just machines that store facts.
One key feature of a good education is that it begins with questions rather than answers. A lesson that starts with a question invites everyone to think, while a lesson that starts with a ready-made answer invites everyone to sleep. 2________ Instead of telling students what to think, good teachers encourage them to ask why and how. This habit of questioning keeps the mind active and open, and it is a skill that will last a lifetime.
Another feature is active participation. Learning is not a passive process in which knowledge is poured into an empty head; it is an active one in which the learner builds understanding. 3________ Students learn best when they discuss, experiment and make mistakes, because these activities force them to think deeply instead of simply copying what the teacher says.
A good education also values failure. Many learners are afraid of giving a wrong answer, so they choose to stay silent rather than risk being laughed at. 4________ When mistakes are treated as chances to learn, students become braver, more creative and more willing to try new ideas.
Finally, a good education connects learning with real life. 5________ When students see that what they study can help them solve real problems, they are far more likely to stay motivated. In short, education is not about filling a bucket with water but about lighting a fire that keeps burning on its own.
A. However, that narrow view misses the real point of education.
B. A good learner, therefore, is not the one who memorises the most, but the one who keeps asking.
C. That is why examinations should be completely abolished in schools.
D. In a good classroom, every student is expected to take part, not just sit and listen.
E. In such a classroom, mistakes are not punished but welcomed as part of learning.
F. Real examples, projects and community work bring textbooks to life.
G. For example, a school with the highest marks always produces the happiest students.
五、阅读理解
(一)
When Daniel first entered Ms. Reed's English class, he sat at the back and said almost nothing. He had moved to a new city, and his reading was far behind that of his classmates. Whenever the teacher asked a question, he looked down at his desk, hoping to be invisible.
Ms. Reed noticed him at once. Instead of calling on him suddenly, she gave him small tasks that he could manage. She lent him a simple novel about a boy who loved football and asked him to write just three sentences about it. Daniel's first effort was full of spelling mistakes, but Ms. Reed wrote 'I can hear your voice' at the bottom of the page.
That sentence changed something. Daniel began to read every night. Slowly, the three sentences became a paragraph, and the paragraph became a page. When the class put on a short play, Ms. Reed persuaded him to play the leading role, even though his hands shook during the whole first rehearsal.
On the night of the performance, Daniel spoke clearly and confidently. His parents, who had come to the school for the first time, could not believe their ears. Daniel later wrote in his journal that Ms. Reed had not so much taught him English as given him the courage to believe in himself.
Years later, Daniel became a teacher himself. He kept on his desk a sentence that he had copied from Ms. Reed: 'I can hear your voice.' Now it was his turn to say the same words to children who were just as frightened as he had once been.
1.Why did Daniel say almost nothing in Ms. Reed's class at first
A. He was not interested in English at all.
B. He was too proud to answer any question.
C. He felt he could not keep up with his classmates.
D. He was waiting for the teacher to notice him.
2.What did Ms. Reed do to help Daniel at the beginning
A. She gave him small tasks that he could manage.
B. She asked him to read aloud in front of the class.
C. She made him copy the textbook every evening.
D. She moved him to a seat in the front row.
3.What does Ms. Reed's note 'I can hear your voice' show about Daniel's writing
A. It contained no spelling mistakes.
B. It already showed his own personality.
C. It was copied from a famous novel.
D. It was too short to be understood.
4.Why could Daniel's parents hardly believe their ears at the performance
A. They had not been invited to the school before.
B. They had never watched a school play.
C. They thought the play was far too long.
D. They were surprised at how well their son spoke.
5.What does the writer mainly want to tell us through Daniel's story
A. Teachers should always be strict with their students.
B. Reading novels is the only way to improve English.
C. A few encouraging words can change a person's life.
D. School plays are the best classroom activity.
(二)
What is education really for Some people answer without thinking: to pass examinations and find a well-paid job. Schools are then judged by their pass rates, and students by their scores. Such goals are understandable, but they describe only a small part of the picture. If education were nothing more than job training, it would stop the moment we received our first salary.
A broader view is that education should teach us how to think. Facts change quickly; today's knowledge may be outdated tomorrow. What remains valuable is the ability to question, to compare sources, and to reach our own conclusions. A person who has learned how to learn can keep growing long after school ends.
Education also shapes character. In a classroom, students learn to listen to different opinions, to admit mistakes, and to cooperate with people who are not like them. These experiences are as important as any formula or grammar rule, because they prepare us for life in a society.
Of course, none of this means that knowledge or examinations are useless. Facts and skills are the raw materials of thought, and without them even the sharpest mind has little to work with. They are simply not the final destination. A good education gives us both a full toolbox and the wisdom to use it well.
So when we ask what education is for, we might answer in this way: it is for becoming a thoughtful, responsible and curious human being. Everything else, grades included, should serve that larger purpose.
6.According to paragraph 1, what does the writer think of goals such as passing exams and finding a job
A. They are the most important aims of education.
B. They are understandable but cover only part of education.
C. They are impossible for most students to reach.
D. They should be completely given up.
7.What does the writer value most in paragraph 2
A. Facts that never change.
B. A high and stable salary.
C. The ability to think and to keep learning.
D. The number of books a person has read.
8.Besides teaching us how to think, what else does education do according to paragraph 3
A. It shapes our character.
B. It guarantees success in life.
C. It takes the place of family life.
D. It ends all disagreements among people.
9.What is the writer's attitude towards knowledge and examinations in paragraph 4
A. They are completely useless.
B. They matter more than thinking.
C. They should be abolished at once.
D. They are useful but not the final goal.
10.What is the main message of the passage
A. Education should help people become thoughtful and responsible.
