Every day we are surrounded by news, videos and advertisements. Some of them inform us honestly, but others are carefully designed to mislead us or to sell us something we do not need. We cannot avoid these messages, but we can learn to question them. 1________ Learning a few simple skills can help you decide what to trust, and these skills are not difficult to master.
First, check the source. A reliable report usually names the writer and the organisation behind it, so that readers know who is responsible. 2________ If a dramatic story appears on a website with no author and no contact information, you should treat it with doubt, however exciting it looks or however many people have shared it.
Second, compare different reports. 3________ When several independent and trustworthy organisations report the same fact, it is more likely to be true. If only one unknown site carries the story, be careful before you share it with others, because sharing spreads the message further and makes it seem more reliable than it is.
Advertising uses its own techniques. Advertisers rarely give you plain facts; instead, they appeal to your feelings with warm images, cheerful music and attractive promises. 4________ Once you notice this technique, you can still enjoy an advertisement without being controlled by it, and you can decide for yourself what is worth buying.
Finally, ask yourself why a message was made. Every message has a purpose. News aims to inform, while an advertisement aims to sell, and a headline may aim simply to shock. 5________ Once you can tell the difference, you are much less likely to be fooled, and you will be able to make up your own mind about what really matters.
A. In other words, you should be able to see who is responsible for the information.
B. So it is important to think like a detective rather than simply believe what you see.
C. That is why printed newspapers are always more reliable than online ones.
D. Look for the same story in several places before you accept it.
E. These emotional images are meant to influence your choice, not to give you information.
F. Knowing the purpose behind a message helps you judge it.
G. For example, many people now get their news mainly from short videos.
五、阅读理解
(一)
When a beloved novel is turned into a film, readers often feel a strange mixture of excitement and fear. They are excited because they will finally see characters they have imagined for years. They are afraid because the film may destroy the world they have built in their own minds.
Turning a book into a film is never a simple copy. A novel of four hundred pages may spend many chapters describing a character's private thoughts, but a film must show, not tell. Directors therefore cut scenes, merge characters and sometimes invent new endings. These changes may work beautifully, or they may disappoint the very readers who loved the original.
In 2001 a long adventure novel was adapted for the cinema. The director removed several minor characters and gave the hero a companion who had never existed in the book. Many readers complained loudly, yet the film attracted millions of people who had never opened the novel. Bookshops soon reported rising sales of the original.
This is why the relationship between page and screen is more complicated than a simple competition. A film is not a rival of the book; it is another version of the same story, told in a different language. The book invites you to imagine; the film shows you one possible picture.
Perhaps the wisest attitude is this: watch the film as a film, and read the book as a book. If you do that, you may enjoy both, and you will understand that adaptation is not a betrayal but a conversation between two forms of art.
1.How do readers often feel when a favourite novel is turned into a film
A. They feel completely indifferent.
B. They feel excited and worried at the same time.
C. They feel angry about the writer.
D. They feel calm and confident.
2.What does paragraph 2 say a film must do that a novel need not
A. Use as few characters as possible.
B. Spend a great deal of money.
C. Show instead of telling.
D. Keep every scene of the original.
3.What happened after the 2001 adaptation mentioned in paragraph 3
A. Sales of the original novel increased.
B. The original novel was soon forgotten.
C. Readers refused to watch any film.
D. The director changed the ending again.
4.What does the writer compare the relationship between a book and a film to in paragraph 4
A. A competition that only one side can win.
B. A business deal between two companies.
C. A perfect copy of the original text.
D. Another way of telling the same story.
5.What is the writer's attitude towards film adaptations
A. He is strongly against them.
B. He accepts and understands them.
C. He is completely uninterested in them.
D. He thinks they waste money and time.
(二)
Teenagers today grow up with screens in their hands. They receive news, watch videos, play games and chat with friends almost without stopping. Nobody would deny that the media offer wonderful chances to learn and to connect with others. The real question is whether they also do harm.
One concern is the sheer amount of time involved. Studies suggest that many young people spend several hours a day in front of a screen. This time often replaces sleep, exercise and face-to-face conversation, all of which are important for a growing body and a growing mind.
A second concern is the power of images. Advertisements and online influencers present perfect lives, perfect faces and perfect holidays. Young viewers may compare these images with their own ordinary days and feel that they are not good enough. Such comparison can lower confidence and even cause anxiety.
There is also the problem of false information. Because anyone can post a video or a message, untrue stories spread faster than ever before. If teenagers accept these stories without questioning them, they may form wrong opinions about the world, about events or even about other people.
Yet the picture is not completely dark. The same media that spread rumours can also spread knowledge, friendship and hope. The key lies in how young people use them. With guidance from parents and teachers, teenagers can learn to choose wisely, to check facts and to switch off when they need rest.
6.According to paragraph 1, what does the writer agree with
A. The media give young people valuable chances to learn and connect.
B. The media are harmful in every possible way.
C. Teenagers should never use any kind of screen.
D. Young people hardly receive news from the media.
7.According to paragraph 2, screen time often replaces ____.
A. school lessons and homework.
B. money and free gifts.
C. sports programmes on television.
D. sleep, exercise and real conversation.
8.Why may advertisements and influencers make some young viewers unhappy
A. Because they cost a lot of money.
B. Because they compare perfect images with their own ordinary lives.
C. Because they are too long to watch.
D. Because they are written in difficult language.
9.What makes false information spread so quickly
A. Newspapers print too many stories.
B. Parents share too much news.
C. Anyone can post, so untrue stories travel fast.
D. Schools teach too little about the media.
10.What is the writer's attitude towards the media in this passage
A. Concerned but hopeful.
B. Completely negative.
C. Totally uninterested.
D. Certain that the media are harmless.
