In many big cities, people live on the same street for years without ever learning their neighbours' names. We can chat instantly with friends on the other side of the planet, yet remain strangers to the family next door. Surveys suggest that a growing number of residents, especially the elderly and newcomers, feel lonely in the middle of crowds. Realising this, many neighbourhoods now organise coffee mornings, repair cafes and street parties. 1________
Start small. Greet the people you pass on the stairs, remember their names, and offer a hand when you can. 2________ On our floor, Mrs Li began simply by collecting parcels for an elderly neighbour who walked with a stick. Within a month, the whole corridor was sharing vegetables from their balconies and watering each other's plants during the holidays. A two-minute chat by the lift costs nothing, yet it may brighten someone's whole day.
Working towards a common goal brings people closer faster than any speech. 3________ In one London street, residents turned an unused car park into a community garden, where they now grow tomatoes and hold weekend picnics. Kneeling side by side in the soil, people who once only nodded politely have become firm friends. 4________
Finally, join in what already exists. Local libraries, sports clubs and charity groups always welcome extra pairs of hands, and they are the quickest way to meet people who live nearby. You could shelve books, teach children chess or walk shelter dogs; every hour you give returns something to you. 5________
Belonging is not something we can buy online. It is something we build, one greeting, one favour and one shared task at a time.
A. Small acts of kindness often start a chain.
B. Some neighbours, however, prefer to keep their doors shut.
C. Here are some simple ways to feel at home where you live.
D. Community gardens are one popular example.
E. In this way, loneliness slowly gives way to friendship.
F. Renting a flat in the city centre can cost half a monthly salary.
G. Joining one of them is another good choice.
五、阅读理解
(一)
When Maya arrived in Harbour Town to start her first job, she knew nobody within five hundred kilometres. Her small flat was quiet, her phone showed no local messages, and by the end of the first week the silence was pressing on her. Her colleagues were friendly enough, but they all went straight home after work. Then she noticed a card in the library window: Volunteers needed — meals for the elderly.
Every Saturday morning, Maya collected hot meals from the community kitchen and delivered them to elderly residents. Once, when Mr Alvarez was ill, she brought him medicine together with his meals. The first door that opened belonged to Mr Alvarez, an eighty-two-year-old fisherman who had lived through storms she could hardly imagine. He insisted that she stay for tea, told her stories of the sea, and corrected her pronunciation of Spanish names with great patience.
Over the following months, Maya's delivery route grew into a web of friendships. Mr Alvarez introduced her to his grandchildren; other families began inviting her to Sunday dinners, and some evenings she joined the Alvarez family for cards and coffee. When the town was flooded last spring, it was Maya who organised the volunteers, because, as she said, she was no longer an outsider.
"I came here to help others," she wrote to her parents, "but I think the community helped me more." Her experience shows that volunteering is not a one-way gift: it connects the giver and the receiver, and it turns a strange town into a home.

A. Maya had finished her volunteering work.
B. Maya planned to move away from the town.

(二)
In Anne of Green Gables, the orphan Anne Shirley arrives at a farm on Prince Edward Island with nothing but a battered suitcase and a head full of imagination. She longs for a kindred spirit — a friend who truly understands her. When she meets Diana Barry, a girl from the neighbouring farm, the two swear lifelong friendship under the apple trees, and for the first time Anne feels that she belongs.
Anne's story still speaks to us, perhaps because it describes what modern connection often lacks. Today we can message fifty people in a minute, yet studies report rising loneliness among the young. Digital contact is quick and convenient, but it rarely carries the depth that Anne found in Diana: shared secrets, patient listening and loyalty tested by quarrels and forgiveness.
Anne, moreover, grows through her friendships. Hot-tempered and talkative, she learns patience from quiet Matthew, generosity from Marilla, and — through her own mistakes and Diana's forgiveness — how to repair a broken relationship, a skill no app can download. Slowly, the lonely little orphan becomes a young woman whom people are glad to call a friend.
The novel reminds us that connection is not a matter of numbers but of devotion. Belonging, as Anne discovers, is built slowly, through honest words and small kindnesses, in a real place shared with real people. Perhaps that is why, more than a century later, readers still return to Green Gables: it shows a world where everyone, even a lonely orphan, can find where they belong.
6.What does Anne long for at Green Gables
A. A rich family to support her.
B. A friend who truly understands her.
C. A quiet life far from other people.
D. A chance to return to her hometown.
7.What does the writer think of digital contact
A. It has completely replaced real friendship.
B. It causes more quarrels among young people.
C. It is fast but often lacks real depth.
D. It is the best way to fight loneliness.
8.What can we infer about Anne from paragraph 3
A. She never made mistakes with her friends.
B. She developed valuable skills through her relationships.
C. She depended on apps to keep friendships.
D. She found it easy to apologise to others.
9.The word "devotion" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A. speed
B. number
C. luck
D. care
10.Why do readers still love the novel, according to the writer
A. It shows how everyone can find a sense of belonging.
B. It teaches modern farming methods.
C. It describes life on a Canadian island in detail.
D. It was the first novel ever written about friendship.
