By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—— not as a musician but as her page turner. "I'm not a trained musician, but I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance."
Mr. Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group's official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn't have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
"A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don't turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot." Mr. Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of "nodding" to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. "I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand," Mr.Titterton said, "Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back."
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms. Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
"My husband is the worst page turner," she laughed. "He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: 'Turn, turn!' "Robert is the best page turner I' ve had in my entire life."
24. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
25. Which of the following best describes Titterton's job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid. C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
26. What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the "nodding".
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
27. Why is Ms. Raspopova's husband "the worst page turner"
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

We live in a town with three beaches. There are two parks less than 10 minutes' walk from home where neighbourhood children gather to play. However, what my children want to do after school is pick up a screen —— any screen —— and stare at it for hours. They are not alone. Today's children spend an average of four and a half hours a day looking at screens, split between watching television and using the Internet.
In the past few years, an increasing number of people and organizations have begun coming up with plans to counter this trend. A couple of years ago, film-maker David Bond realized that his children, then aged five and three, were attached to screens to the point where he was able to say "chocolate" into his three-year-old son's ear without getting a response. He realized that something needed to change, and, being a London media type, appointed himself "marketing director for Nature". He documented his journey as he set about treating nature as a brand to be marketed to young people. The result was Project Wild Thing, a film which charts the birth of the Wild Network, a group of organizations with the common goal of getting children out into nature.
"Just five more minutes outdoors can make a difference," David Bond says. "There is a lot of really interesting evidence which seems to be suggesting that if children are inspired up to the age of seven, then being outdoors will be a habit for life." His own children have got into the habit of playing outside now: "We just send them out into the garden and tell them not to come back in for a while."
Summer is upon us. There is an amazing world out there, and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.
28. What is the problem with the author's children
A. They often annoy the neighbors. B. They are tired of doing their homework.
C. They have no friends to play with. D. They stay in front of screens for too long.
29. How did David Bond advocate his idea
A. By making a documentary film. B. By organizing outdoor activities.
C. By advertising in London media. D. By creating a network of friends.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "charts" in paragraph 2
A. records B. predicts C. delays D. confirms
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Let Children Have Fun B. Young Children Need More Free Time
C. Market Nature to Children D. David Bond: A Role Model for Children

Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional(情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person's makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and people skills." Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how to best help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis(重视) an emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives(视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
32. What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence
A. It can be measured by an IQ test. B. It helps to exercise a person's mind.
C. It includes a set of emotional skills. D. It refers to a person's positive qualities.
33. Why does the author mention "doctor" and "cheater" in paragraph 2
A. To explain a rule. B. To clarify a concept
C. To present a fact. D To make a prediction.
34. What is the author's attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence
A. Its appeal to the public. B Expectations for future studies.
C. Its practical application. D. Scientists with new perspectives.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Hobbies are more than just a fun way to kill the time. A widespread and harmful misunderstanding is that engaging in hobbies mirrors a lack of self-discipline. 36 In fact, hobbies can provide essential balance in our lives and enhance overall well-being. The benefits you obtain will depend on your hobby-taking up jogging, for instance, will benefit your cardiovascular(心血管的) health more than, say, crossword puzzles, which may improve your cognitive health. The point is that nearly all hobbies can provide measurable positive health benefits.
If we regularly spend time on hobbies, we usually enjoy a higher level of fitness. 37 A 2023comprehensive analysis of multiple studies found strong evidence that engaging in leisure activities can improve health by protecting against heart disease and age-related physical decline. The report, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry, found that for people who were suffering from a chronic(慢性的) illness, doing a hobby helped them manage their symptoms and even slowed the progression of their illness. But another of the researchers' findings is perhaps the most striking: the strong relationship between doing leisure activities and increased longevity(长寿). 38 It found that older adults have a 19% lower risk of disease-related death when they engage in regular leisure activities.
39 They are vital to sustaining our mental health. People who made a conscious effort each day to spend time-doing hobbies(no matter what they were) showed an average boost of 8% in well-being and a 10% drop in stress and anxiety, according to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Personality. "On a fundamental level, humans need meaning, something that gives them a sense of purpose. 40 ' says Dr Hafeez, who has led several massive studies on hobbies. "Engaging in what you enjoy greatly enhances your well-being."
With all these visible benefits of hobbies, why not just make time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment every day
A. The science backs this up.
B. Hobbies make us happier.
C. You gain a lot from hobbies.
D. Nothing could be further from the truth.
E. The more you engage in hobbies, the longer you will live.
F. A different study conducted last year confirmed the impact.
G. And being able to pursue your passion really contributes to that.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(大礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens——her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child. you just don t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, "Emily, you' re next." Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to do. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and was told the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted.

书面表达范文
Dear Jack,
I'm terribly sorry to learn that your addiction to mobile games has become a headache for you. Obvious are the bad effects brought by mobile games, such as failure to focus on study, eyesight damage and so on. Actually, it is not uncommon for teenagers of our age to have a preference for mobile games, so don't bother about it and here comes my advice.
It always comes first to limit the amount of time you use your phone. The phone is a good servant, but a bad master. You can play games to relax, but never immerse yourself in it. Equally important is to find some other hobbies, such as playing basketball, reading books and so on.
I hope my advice is of some help to you. Looking forward to your breaking free from your bother.(137 words)
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写范文
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr. Buttler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part-your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself.” Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel!

W: Good morning, Mr, Cooper.
M: Hello, Ms. Rogers. How was your weekend
W: Well, I went to a strawberry farm with my kids. It was super fun.
M: A strawberry farm Is it near our town I'd prefer not to drive too far after a tiring week. We' re just looking for something relaxing but not too boring.
W: It only took 30 minutes by car. We picked a lot of strawberries.
M: Sounds interesting. My daughter loves strawberries. I want to take her there this Sunday. Can you give me the contact number of the farm

W: That might be worth going to. We' re trying to encourage our children to cook.
M: Another workshop is just for children, and that's on creating posters to reflect the history of the town. The aim is to make children aware of the town has changed over the centuries. The results will be shown in the community center. Then the other workshop is on toy-making, and that's for adults only.
W: Oh, why's that
M: Because participants will be making toys out of wood. There' ll be a lot of sharp tools around, though there won't be much work.
W: It makes sense to keep children away from it.
M: Exactly.
(Text 10)
W: Let me tell you all about an amazing Survival Weekend trip with my class.
When the bus picked us up from the school gate at 6 in the morning, it was raining heavily, which wasn't great. However, it hadn't rained in the forest. That was important because we needed dry places for our first survival activity: building shelters.
There were three leaders, each responsible for 10 students. After we were divided into three groups, we started collecting broken tree branches and leaves to build our shelters. Then we ate a light breakfast we had prepared at home.
After breakfast, we learned how to build a fire safely. For lunch, we had hot dogs and potatoes cooked over the fire. After lunch, we put out the fire and got ready to look for food in the forest. Our leaders showed us which foods were safe. We returned late in the afternoon. Each group made their own campfire and learned to cook soup for supper over the fire with the things we had collected. It was delicious. We all enjoyed the trip.
