When Mia graduated from high school, she refused several well-paid part-time office jobs and chose to work at a small neighborhood bookstore. Many of her friends felt confused. Bookstore work brought low pay and long standing hours.
For Mia, books had always been important. As a child with few playmates, she spent most spare time reading books borrowed from this very store. Those stories comforted her through lonely days. She dreamed of giving that same warm feeling to other local young readers.
Her daily work included receiving new arrivals, arranging shelves and helping customers pick suitable books. Beyond regular work, she set up a small reading corner for children. Every Saturday morning, she held free story-sharing activities. Slowly, more kids and parents began to show up. Some parents told Mia their children became more willing to read after joining the activities.
Though money was tight, Mia felt great satisfaction. “I cannot earn much, but I see real changes happening around me,” she once wrote in her work diary.

Human beings have been using public libraries for hundreds of years. Yet in the digital age, many people wonder whether traditional libraries will disappear.
It is true that e-books and online reading resources are widely available. People can search for information on mobile devices almost anytime. However, studies show public libraries remain irreplaceable in modern society. First, libraries serve as equal public spaces. Not every family can afford expensive electronic devices or paid online learning resources. Libraries provide free books, computers and internet for all citizens, especially for low-income groups.
Besides offering reading materials, modern libraries keep developing new services. Many host public lectures, hand-craft workshops and job-hunting guidance. Some set up special zones for teenagers to relax and communicate safely. Libraries are turning into multi-functional community centers rather than just places storing books.
Of course, libraries also face challenges. They must keep updating collections and improve digital services to meet changing public needs. If they keep changing together with society, traditional libraries will continue their value for a long time.
8. What concern is raised in the first paragraph
A. Whether e-books will cost more money. B. Whether traditional libraries will die out.
C. Whether people will spend less time reading. D. Whether online information is reliable.
9. What is the main advantage of libraries as public spaces
A. They offer high-speed Wi-Fi for free for students only.
B. They provide equal free resources for different people.
C. They produce large numbers of popular e-books.
D. They help local families cut housing costs.
10. What change have modern public libraries made
A. They stop collecting paper-printed books.
B. They mainly sell digital reading devices.
C. They offer various community-oriented services.
D. They require citizens to make small payments.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of public libraries
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Negative. D. Hopeful.
D
Plants cannot run away from danger, so they have developed special ways to fight against insects. Some plants produce bad-tasting chemical substances inside their leaves to keep plant-eating insects away.
Scientists have long known that certain plants can send warning signals to nearby plants. When one plant gets attacked by insects, it releases special volatile chemicals into the air. Neighboring plants receive these chemical signals and start producing defensive chemicals ahead of time. In this way they prepare themselves for possible insect attacks.
Scientists once thought this airborne warning only happened among plants of similar species. New research shows the communication can happen between totally different plant species as well. In one controlled experiment, tomato plants being eaten by caterpillars sent out warning gas signals. Receiving the signals, nearby corn plants increased their self-defense chemical production, even though tomatoes and corn belong to completely different plant families.
There are still unsolved questions. Researchers are still studying exactly how different plant species recognize and understand these air-borne chemical messages. The findings may bring practical value for agriculture. In the future, farmers might make use of such plant warning systems to reduce pesticide use on farmland.
12. Why do some plants create bad-tasting chemicals
A. To attract helpful insects B. To avoid being eaten by insects
C. To speed up their own growth D. To compete with nearby plants for sunlight
13. What will neighboring plants do after receiving airborne warning signals
A. They will release poisonous liquid on leaves.
B. They will produce defensive chemicals in advance.
C. They will grow new leaves very quickly.
D. They will move their leaves away from danger.
14. What is the new discovery from the experiment
A. Insects can change the chemical signals given by plants.
B. Plants can communicate across different species.
C. Corn plants seldom suffer from caterpillar attacks.
D. Tomato plants are the most sensitive warning-sending plants.
15. What possible application can this research bring
A. Developing new kinds of high-yield farm crops
B. Creating totally pesticide-free farmland immediately
C. Helping farmers cut down pesticide usage
D. Improving the taste of farm vegetables
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
How to Develop Good Reading Habits
Reading opens doors to new worlds. However, many students find it hard to keep a regular reading habit. 16_________
● Set small and clear goals
Do not plan to finish a whole thick book in one weekend. Start small. For example, read 15 pages every night before going to bed. 17 Small steady progress works much better than sudden long reading marathons.
● Choose books truly interesting for you
You do not have to force yourself to read classic works you dislike just because others praise them. 18 Novels, travel journals, science popular articles all count as valuable reading. Once reading becomes enjoyable, you will pick up books more willingly.
● Create a simple reading environment
Keep your mobile phone away when you sit down to read. Bright quiet corners help you focus. 19 Even short periods of focus add up over weeks.
● Keep a simple reading record
You can write down book names and a few short thoughts after finishing each book. You do not need long formal book reports. 20 It helps you look back and see how much you have read.
A. It can be just one or two sentences.
B. Here are practical suggestions for you.
C. Buy as many different books as you can afford.
D. Pick reading materials matching your own hobbies.
E. You should spend at least two hours reading each day.
F. Stick to your goal instead of reading for many hours once in a while.
G. You do not need several hours; twenty-minute focus is enough.

On a cool autumn afternoon, Anna walked home from school. On her way, she spotted a small weak dog lying beside the roadside bushes. Its fur was dirty and thin. It trembled slightly and looked hungry. Anna felt sorry for the poor little animal.
She looked around. No one nearby seemed to own the dog. She wanted to take it home, yet she worried her parents might disagree. Their small apartment was not suitable for raising pets. After hesitation, Anna carefully picked up the little dog and headed home.
When Anna stepped through the front door with the dog in arms, her parents felt surprised. Her dad expressed concern about extra trouble and cost. Her mom worried about possible diseases the stray dog might carry. Anna explained how helpless the dog was and begged her parents to give it a chance.
After long discussion, parents finally reached a compromise. They agreed to keep the dog for one week. Within seven days, Anna must find a proper new home for it, or they would send it to the local animal shelter. Anna accepted the condition happily. She named the little dog Lucky.

M: In 2024, a research group at a European university carried out a series of experiments on how dogs react to human emotional voices. Fortifute pet dogs took part in the whole research project. Researchers played different recorded human voices for each dog joyful laughter, gentle comfort, angry shouts and sad sighs. Every dog was placed in a quiet experimental room alone. Scientists carefully recorded each dog's body language and head movements.
At the beginning of the experiment, when hearing angry voices, most dogs would lower their heads and pull their ears backward, showing obvious signs of nervousness. Faced with joyful laughter, many dogs would wipe their tails quickly and walk toward the loudspeaker. After 12 rounds of repeated tests, the dogs could tell the difference between positive and negative human emotional sounds with an accuracy rate of 82%.
Surprisingly, dogs did not merely respond to loud volume. When the volume was kept the same, they still could distinguish happy tones from upset ones. When several dogs were tested together in one space, their sensitivity to human emotions grew even higher, reaching 91% accuracy.
Later, the researchers invited 20 college students to finish the same distinguishing task with processed audio. The students reached 86% accuracy. This study does not mean dogs can fully understand human words. Instead, it proves that dogs are extremely sensitive to the emotional information carried in human voice tones, even without knowing the exact meaning of sentences.
